Clegg of Spout House Farm, Huncoat, Lancashire.

My great grandfather's sister Ann Pickup (born 1866 -Woodplumpton, Lancashire), married Richard Clegg (born 1886 Huncoat, Lancashire). Richard is the son of Jonathan Clegg (born Hapton, Lancahire) and Elizabeth. There are many Clegg siblings (Betsy, James, Ormerod, Margaret, Mary and George) plus half siblings (John Thomas, Martha, Joseph and Rebecca), the children of Jonathan's second wife Mary. For many years the family lived at Spout House Farm Huncoat. The lane leading to the farm is now know as Clegg's Lane. Richard and Ann married in 1899 at St James Church in Church, Lancashire. Their first child Minnie was born in 1900. In 1901 the family were still living at Spout House Farm with step mother Mary, half brother Joseph and a grandaughter Rebecca. Anyone know anything about these "Cleggs" or their descendants?

Re: Clegg of Spout House Farm, Huncoat, Lancashire.

I have just seen this post, 3 years on! The Cleggs of Spout House Farm appear in my family tree, though my connection with them is via Elizabeth Ann READ (1838-78), who married Jonathan CLEGG in 1856. Her mother was Elizabeth ALLEN (m. James Read in 1837). HER parents were James and Ann Allen (nee WALKDEN). James was the innkeeper of the Bull Inn in Burnley until his retirement to Spout House Farm in the 1840s. At the 1851 census James is the farmer at Spout House, with his son James, and grand-daughter Elizabeth Ann Read. James was also a coach proprietor, and ran coaches from Burnley to Preston and Blackpool. He was married 3 times (though I can find no official record of his 3rd marriage, to a Rachel) and died in 1867 at the age of 79. James was my g'g'g'grandfather via his eldest daughter Sarah (m Henry RILEY). James apparently made many improvements to Spout House Farm, according to Richard Ainsworth ("History & Associations of Altham & Huncoat")and sounds to have been a very enterprising man.
Hi NoraLee

I wish you had seen this earlier. We kept the quilt for about 2 yrs. and finally a gal came into our center and said she thought it was her family, went home and checked and said it was. So it must not have been a real close connection, or maybe she wasn't an avid genealogist. If you want to email me personally I can give you the name and number of the friend who brought her in and she could put you in contact with her. Perhaps she would send you pictures or who knows share it somehow?

My email address is akh@molalla.net
Sorry I can't do more, Alice

I am reposting this as a reply to my original post in order to renew interest in this. I noticed there has not been much activity in the last few years. I have renewed my research after an absence of a few years with a change of email. grayhath@hughes.net
or backup grayhathcock@yahoo.com

Schley County Enterprise Feb. 23, 1888 Vol. III No. 22

Death of C.D. Clegg --- On Monday last, the 19th inst., Mr. C.D. Clegg, a former citizen of Schley County, departed this life at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. McBride, Macon County of a congestive chill. He lived to the ripe old age of 84, raised a large family of children, among them are P.C., V.A., and T.B. Clegg. He was a good honest man, well known through out this section, and numbered his friends by the score. His aged companion preceeded him to the
grave several years ago. He leaves a number of grown sons and daughters, together with several grand and great-grandchildren, all of whom have the sympathy of the ENTERPRISE and the community.

Additional Comments:

Son-in-law refers to Mr. James McBride of Oglethorpe in Macon, Co., Ga.

A shorter version of the obituary appears in the Daily Americus Recorder on Febuary 23, 1888 and the weekly Americus Recorder of that week. Available on micofilm at the Lake Blackshear Regional Library, Americus, Georgia.

As time permits, I have about 10 other documents to transcribe and post, mostly deeds.

Hello Jo,

Does your father live in Swan Hill? I suppose you have been to Berry Street and asked for records ?

Where did she goe to after she left Berry Street I wonder.

What about Dept of Human Services for ask for access to her file.

You could ask your Federal member of Parliament to assist. As Centrelink have a system where they will pass on letters to a person , but you are never told if they are alive or dead. If they are receiving a pension under Clarice Clegg will this system be helpful to you though.
happy to send you info on CLAN if you send me your details.

There will be news this week about orphanages in Australia, as the senate in quiry are due to release a report on 25th June. For more info see www.clan.org.au
Best wishes Jo with helping your Dad.

Hooroo
Leonie Sheedy.
CLAN.
I am looking for Clarice Betty (Clegg).
Clarice was born on 01.01.1921 at the Berry St Children's Home in Melbourne, Australia. I don't know if she kept the name Clegg as orphans often had their names changed.
Her mother was Elsie Elizabeth Clegg (b.1894, St Arnaud, Victoria, AUS).
Her father was Clarence James Trowbridge (born in Kerang, Vic, AUS).
At around 15 yrs of age Clarice left the orphanage. Clarice would be around 87 now.

My father also grew up in various orphanages. I believe Clarice is my fathers sister. To find her or her remaining family would be the best 80th Birthday present for my Dad ever.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jo

Sorry

My florence Clegg was born Florence Ridge, Clegg was her married name. To my Granddad Horace Clegg. It was either one of his brothers that came to Canada or one of his father's brothers. They used to tell me that my namesake (Steve Clegg) lived in Canada. I have a vague memory of them saying he was a policeman. Don't you have an inspector Steve Clegg in your area. Maybe he is my relative?

Good luck with your search

Steve

I am the daughter of the Billy Joe Clegg you are speaking of. He was born William Joseph Summers (biological parents: Rubene R. Chipman and Robert B. Summers). He was adopted by Julia Ann Farel (or Farell) and Thomas Golden Clegg. Their baby girl died as an infant and they raised my father (and adopted him as a teenager). I inherited photo albums and clippings from Tom & Julia Clegg (my grandparents) If there is anything you need to know about them...I will try to help you. Carmen

Re your Jane CLEGG born 1829 Lancashire. My Joseph CLEGG was transported to Australia in 1830. His petition for clemency indicated he had a wife and two children. My best guess is that the children were born between 1824-1830.

If they survived, they are not found with known family. His wife in England died in October of 1833.
