Clelands: My Grandfather was Thomas Cleland, born in Glasgow, Scotland. His Father was Samuel Cleland m. Margaret King, then Mary Carey. Thomas's mother died when he was a year old. Samuel was born in County Down in 1834. His Parents were Robert Cleland m. Ann Marner. Robert died in 1834 in Magheralone, Kilmore, County Down. He left land to Moses, James and his wife Ann. She left Ireland some time after Robert's death and moved with her daughter and three sons to Govan, Glasgow, Scotland where the family remained. I have written to Churches, Societies, the Irish Heritage Association, but have not been able to find Robert's burial site.

Hello Dale,

I pray your e-mail is unchanged since you first posted this thread 12 years ago!

I have three sons of John Cleland (born 29 Mar 1866, Creevycarnonan, Kilmore Parish, County Down, Ireland) who married M. Jane Gray/Grey (abt. 1770, Ballygally, Inch Parish, County Down, Ireland) on 05 May 1791 at Church of Ireland, Inch, County Down, Ireland.

Sons:
1. William Cleland (1792, County Down - 06 May 1876, South Mountain, Dundas County, Ontario.) m. Elizabeth McWilliams (d/o David McWilliams & Nancy Bradshaw). They had 10 children. The eldest, John, was the only child to move away. In 1871 John loaded up his very pregnant wife, Julia Carman Bowen, and their 10 children and moved to Dundas, Rice County, MN, USA.

2. Thomas James Cleland (1798, County Down - bet. 1851-1861, Edwardsburg, Grenville County, Ontario) came to Edwardsburgh Township Grenville County, Ontario before 05 Dec 1835. He m. Mary McCaffrey (parents unknown at this time). They had 7 children. The eldest, Mary, cannot be located after the 1861 census. The remaining children expanded throughout Canada and America.

3. Robert Cleland (birth & death unsubstantiated) m. Margaret McC????? (birth & death unsubstantiated). One known child: William C. Cleland was born in County Down, Ireland, moved to Dundas County, Ontario in 1847 and again moved in 1867 to Dundas, Rice County, Minnesota, USA.

I have a huge Cleland file and am waiting for an Inter-Library Loan resource to arrive so I can begin connecting all of my Clelands!

I would love any insight into Creevycarnonan and that area's migration to Dundas County, Ontario before 1850.

Thanks!

I'm looking for the parents/siblings of A. John Cleland, Jr., born 25 Dec 1926, died 23 Sep 1993 in Boca Raton, FL. It appears that his father would be A. John, Sr., but can anyone confirm this? A. John Cleland, Jr. was married to Daisy Gordon Davidson, 1925-1972. They had three sons: Richard, John Gordon, and Alexander Davidson. Could the "A" stand for "Alexander?"

Re: CLELANDS: South Carolina and Georgia

I am researching a John Cleland, b. 1812 in S.C. He was in the 1850 Census with his wife Parmelia with the following kids:
Drayton b. 1838 in GA
George b. 1840 in GA
Pinckney b. 1843 in GA
Elizbeth b. 1846 in GA
Mary b. 1849 in GA
Also, a young women named Anna Thomas (b 1825) lived with them at this time. John eventually married Anna Thomas in 1854 in DeKalb. Later he was in the Civil War (mustered out and survived - easy to find his records here in ancestry). John and Anna Cleland show up in 1870 and 1880 in Barnes District of Dekalb with the following children:
Mary M. b.1849 (John's daughter with former wife Parmelia)
Lena b.1851 (John's daughter with former wife Parmelia)
Thomas b. 1855
Amanda b. 1858
Caroline b. 1860

Anna has died before the 1880 census.

I am actually trying to figure out who this Anna Thomas' parents are but got down the line with her and John Cleland so I thought I would share in case it helps. My suspisions are that this John Cleland was from Beufort SC because the John Cleland found in Newberry SC was still there later in 1840 when this John is already in Georgia, Dekalb.

Anyway, hope this helps and let me know if anyone knows anything about this Anna Thomas!

Edward A. Cleland, 12/17/1852 - 2/21/1917, Lynchburg, Virginia

                                                       Edward A. Cleland

Lynchburg, Va., Feb. 20.--Edward A. Cleland, president of the Cleland-Peck Company and for many years a leading citizen of this city, died this morning at 5 o'clock, at his residence on Norfolk avenue, his death following an illness of three days of pneumonia. Announcement of his death came as a great shock to the city, for it was not genrally known that he was ill. Mr. Cleland suffered an attack of the grip last Friday, which quickly developed into pneumonia, but even then Mr. Cleland's condition was not regarded as critical until yesterday about noon.

Edward Alexander Cleland was born December 17, 1852, in this city, where he resided all his life, with the exception of a few years spent in the South. His parents were James Cleland and Janet Murdock, both natives of Scotland. He was educated in the schools of Lynchburg and at the Blacksburg Agriculturral and Mechanical College, now the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Upon completion of his studies he returned to Lynchburg and entered into business with his father and brother; the late James Cleland under the firm name of James Cleland and Sons. Shortly afterwards he removed to Vicksburg, Miss., where he was superintendent of the gas works, remaining there until the yellow fever epidemic of 1873, when he returned to Lynchburg and re-entered his father's firm.

Mr. Cleland was united in marriage with Miss Ella O. Peck, daughter of the late John C. Peck and Julia Housman Peck, of Botetourt county on October 17, 1882, and besides his wife he is survived by the following children: James E. Cleland, Miss Julia Cleland, Mrs. George Hay, of Detroit, Mich.; Miss Eloise Cleland, Miss Ruth Cleland and Edward A. Cleland, Jr. he also has one surviving sister, Mrs. William H. Snead, of this city.

"The Roanoke Times," Roanoke, Va., February 21, 1917

In my research I found a John C Cleland in the 1840 census, (40) yo living in St Augustine, Fl. .
Also found a John born 1812 in SC that lived in DeKalb, Ga in 1850. His wife was Parnelia.
I don't know if this helps.
One thing I did discover, is In the census, you will see that the parish that the Cleland's lived in is listed as Beaufort, but in fact is around the area known as Coosawhatchee. Now in Jasper county, at one time it was also listed as Hampton co.
I also remember my mother talking about a Grover Cleveland, but can't remember in what relationship to Noah who was my mother's grandfather.
I have been searching for information on Noah's mother, Mary Holland.
