Re: Info on John Clement in Belgium

I just got on this.....Anna Clement is my Maternal Great Grandmother. I have her as being born in 1846 and died on Jan 8, 1895 and is buried in the Old St. John's Cemetery in Delphos, Sec C row 6. I have been there but it is a sandstone monument that is absolutely unreadable. She is the mother of Anna Niemeyer, my grandmother. David was born in 1844 in Wellingholzhausen, Hanover Germany and died August 19, 1886 in Westphalia, Anderson County, Kansas. I have a detailed story about how he was kicked by his horse, and the daughter Anna was with him and was told not to tell Mom (Anna clement)...He died within a week, and the family mved back to Dayton. They were in Delphos in 1880. So how are you related to my Aunt Elvera (my godmother). My mother is Luella Kroeger. I know nothing of Anna Clements past or lineage.

1. William Clement
2. George Clement m. Audry Denny
3. George Clement
4. Jacob Clement/Clemens b. 1651
5. Gerhart Clemens 1680-1744

Jacob and his brother John immigrated to America in 1669 but Jacob returned to England in 1677 where he married and then migrated to Holland.
Jacob's son, Gerhart immigrated to America in 1709 settling in Skippack, Pennsylvania. I don't know whether Jacob's brother, John stayed in America or not. If so, he may have settled in Virginia, but I really don't know at this point, Cathi. I would be happy to e-mail you what I have found so far on this family if you would like.
Hope this helps!
Pam
planed313@gmail.com
i have the same photo that you have of John Clement and his brother. it was taken at a photo studie in Arlon, Bel. photographer: C. H. lambert (Charles) of the Le Cliches Conserves Exposition national De Bruxelles. Ws there a Worlds Fair in Belgium then? on the back of the photo is handwritten by I think my Aunt Elvera Kroeger Hotz (great niece of John Clement)is written "uncle John Clement and his brother Fr. Dominick." we had always been told that Fr. Dominick visited more than once. and that they thought his high-heeled boots interesting. Perhaps he was a Dominican priest? I have not have time of late to do further research. I know quite a bit about John Clement Sr. family. There is quite a lot of info about John, Jr. in the Delphos Herold. He was mentally ill. John Clement, Jr. would be my great uncle. on the maternal side

Hi: Believe I can help you Andrew Bowen Clement was the son of Rev John A. Cloement and Chrity matilda Beck, Andrew Bowen was a traveling minister/missionary and visited many places out west and ended up in Habersham Georgia. I have a picture of him and also as I recall mjy wife, whose maiden name is Clement< and I visited his grave a few years back, I need to go back in my files to see what other info I have about him and his descendants etc and ancestors. It would probably be easier to fwd the info directly rather than through msg board.

Ted Richard
Hi Roy,
I unfortunately missed your earlier, detailed message. From what you wrote, it's possible, just possible, that we may be distant relatives. As you may have seen in my earlier writing, I elaborated upon the same fate to the early Clemen's in France. They were supposedly Huguenottes (Protestant), who fled France to Berlin, Germany on that tragic night.
Regretfully, I am still trying to tie down that early Clement with a reliable contact.

My Clement line originated in France. They were protestent
Due to King Louis XIV and XV slaughtering protestents when ever they needed money from the Pope to fight there wars with England my line of the Clement family fled to Germany as the good king of Germany was very benevelent toward the protesatents. I do not know when they fled to Germany. But my 3rd Great Grandfather in 1775 Johann Wilhelm Clement was given a choice of enlisting in the Hessian Army or go to prison. So he enlisted and became a Hessian Soldier in the American Revolutionary War. He took part in the takeing of Staten Island Where he was wounded. He was with the field Artillery under the command of General Knyphausen. When forced into the ranks of the Hessian Army he was living in
Schmalkalden in Thuringia area of Germany this is near the
Black Forest in Germany. He married Johanna Frolig they were
Loylist from Columbus N.Y. on the Hudson River. I due beleave we are cousins. Lets keep in contact.

I am not familiar with your Jules, but there were clements in Louisiana, specifically New Orleans during the 1700's colonial period before the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. My 3great grandfather is Henry Clement (wife, Elizabeth) a banker/financier in New Orleans, whose father, William, was a financier in New York. One of Henry's daughters, Ann Eliza born in N.O. in 1801 or 1802, married in 1819 in N.O. my 2great grandfather, Benjamin Story, b.1784 in New Jersey.
They had 10 children. They died in 1873 and 1878, respectively. For added interest, they were all buried in the old Girod Cementery, which had to be excavated (and all bones removed and reinterred) to make way for the construction of the Superdome. Local superstition and legend goes that that's why the Saints never can win...their
stadium was built on top of one of the oldest cementeries
in the city! Not to worry, my ancesters rest safely now at Lakelawn.
I hope to hear back about you search. My Clement family, though is not French, though they married into the established French families when they moved to New Orleans in the 1700's. Possibly your Jules is a grandson of my Henry. Was he from France or just his wife, Anaise?
I'd like to hear from other Clements of New Jersey/New York and Louisiana.
Suzanne M. Kuhn

Hello, my name is Julieann Clement. But my ancestors were from Russia. I think the name may have been changed from a longer name that I'm not aware of. My great grandparents, Antony & Mary Clement lived in Massachusetts. Mary died from the influenza pandemic in 1919. Antony died in 1935.

I haven't had any luck what so ever researching this side of my family. The name change makes things very difficult for sure. Does anyone have Russian roots in their Clement family that you might know of?

Thanks,
Julie

Note that John Clement's first wife was Sarah Walker, daughter of Nelson Walker and Elizabeth East. Through Elizabeth's family which is traceable to the 1500's you are distantly related to Jefferson, Marshall and R.E. Lee.
John's heritage is well known back to the 1600's in Virginia and I would be happy to share it. Contact me at cpjiii@bellsouth.net. Ellen was the half sister of Maria Peterson Saunders, my great, great grandmother. They were the daughters of Edmund Saunders (Sanders) of Brunswick/Dinwiddie area and two different mothers (Ellen by Mahulda Cobb). I had John Edmund as Charlie E. Clement. Is it possible there was a third child? Would like to know more about him. Have never been able to find the name of Edmund Saunders first wife but she was somehow related to the Petersons of Brunswick County, Va.
John T's middle name was Terry. The Clements, Terrys, Gooches and Thorps were intermarried at every generation for at least three hundred years and probably intermarried in England before that. They were "New Light" Presbyterians and were allowed to not take the Oath of Loyalty because of their objection to swearing. Neither did they believe in "graven images" which accounts for the absence of tombstones. Sarah and, I believe, John T are buried on the old family land in the midst of Chickasaw State Park to the north side of hwy 100. The site is described as a level plot but had been taken over by the forest of the park and I have never been able to locate it. My grandfather pointed the land out to me as a child, but time and change has prevented me from locating it exactly. Don had outlined John's ancestry correctly as proven by various Deeds in Tennessee and in Granville, NC, Virginia and by John Clement's will in Virginia. Will be happy to share my research notes which represent about twenty years of digging and includes deeds, wills, inventories, etc. John T's mother was Elizabeth Terry, daughter of James Terry who served in the Revolution chasing Tories. Am delighted to find another cousin researching this line
Charles

He was ophaned at age 6 or 7 when both parents were killed in an automobile accident. We don't know his parents names but we believe he was taken in by relatives. He may have had an aunt by the name of Ellie Thompson who lived in Arkansas in the 1950's. I have hit a dead end and would appreciate anything we can use to help our search.
