Rachel Mary Winter

Seven years ago, I posted my first query on my great-grandmother, Rachel Mary Winter, daughter of Richard Henry, and Mattie Clemons Odom Winter; and wife of John Dudley Martin. About that time I discovered some posts by Kay Fulton, who also is a descendant of Rachel Mary. I posted a reply, but nothing happened. I attempted to send an email to her, but the one listed bounced back (her original post was two years before I read it).

And now today, I did a search and found not only the original post, but two others that I had never seen before!

I hope that Kay is still out there, and that she will respond! We have your information now - and would love to hear from you!

Gordon Darr

William Clemens of Bellevue, Ohio in 1876

William Clemens of Bellevue, Ohio is listed among the dead in a train accident.

The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Train No. 5, The Pacific Express left a snowy Erie, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. As The Pacific Express plowed through the snow and crossed a bridge over the Ashtabula River, about 100 yards from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, the passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. In just seconds, the bridge fractured and the train plunged 70 feet into a watery abyss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Ashtabula Bridge Disaster."
Hi, This is a long shot but I am searching for information on William Clemons b 17/01/1803 Penwith Cornwall (P: William Clemons & English Bennetts); he married Grace Trembath b28/10/1807 Penzance Cornwall (P: Hugh Trembath & Anne Rowe). Together they had 10 children, 2 of their daughters Ann (she is my x4 grandmother) & Elizabeth Hannah went to Australia & 2 of their sons Charles & Joseph went to USA. Joseph married a Sarah in Pennsylvania and had 3 daughters. Charles married Jane James and took her and their sons to USA. Somewhere along the line they separated and she lived her days out in Ironwood, Gogebie Michigan.
Anyone out there who is related to these Gentleman in the US and know the family tree beyond William Clemons, I would be most grateful.

Thanks heaps for you all your help
Tania Forward
Toowoomba Qld Australia

Hi, I was searching LDS website and found the following. Haven't confirmed it yet though but maybe it will get you going or maybe you posted it? Elias son of Peter b)7-18-1767, Chester PA d)10-9-1844 Pike Twp, Lucas Co., Buried in Salisbury Cemeter and Mary Ann Stahl b)8-15-1775, Milford, Lehigh PA d) 2-16-1856 Fulton Co., OH, married 7-12-1792 Cumberland, PA it shows Peter's Father as William Saltzborger. Again, I haven't been able to verify this info but it is a start. Sallie Ann Clemons is my relative. Fulton Co. OH Gen Web has lots of stuff about Clemons and Butler's my line. Also, an old Fulton Co. History book shows that Elias and Sallie Ann was the 1st marriage in Fulton Co.

I think this is a valid pair.

Hi David -

I'd love to learn anything you care to share on this family!

C. M. Clemons (c.1869 - aft 1910??) of Torrington, CT was on board the Hudson Bay whaler "Francis Allyn" of New Bedford on its 1899 voyage, under Capt. Gifford and the Thos. Luce company. His age was listed as 30, 5'6" tall, with brown eyes and light complexion. Clemons and his crewmate George Cleveland were ordered to be dropped off at Wager Bay and open a trading post for the Luce company.

According to the book “When the Whalers were Up North” by Dorothy Harley Eber, Clemons was to open and manage the new company station with Cleveland. She writes: “For two winters [Cleveland] had with him a white companion, Charles Clemmons of Torrington, Connecticut.” However in a 1906 lawsuit, Cleveland claimed that “When the Era (sic?) reached her destination his companion's courage failed and he sailed home with the boat, leaving Cleveland alone.” So it's unclear whether Clemons stayed for two years, or returned with the ship. (OR whether he returned on the Era, another Luce ship in the area... "Era" could also be a reporting error.)

The Francis Allyn returned to NB on Oct 6, 1900 with 5000 pounds of whalebone.

Clemons was the son of Hiram and Fidelia Clemons.

[1870 census, Torrington, CT:
Hiram Clemons(?) 25 Truckman CT
Fidelia 21 CT
Charles 1 CT]

[1880 census: Torrington, Litchfield Co., CT:
Hiram N.
Re: Peyton ? Clemons or Clemmons

Hi Dorothy:

We may have a connection in two places. My surname, Darr, was originally "Durren" in Germany. My immigrant ancestor was Gottlieb Durr (short for Durren), who settled in Winnebago County, WI. There are Darrs all over the Western Illinois and Eastern Iowa area, mostly distant relatives.

On my mother's side, I seem to be descended from Peyton Clements. I hope you are still active on ancestry.com and will reply!

Gordon

Rev. Clemons killed while on his way to picnic

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 4 August 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

PECULIAR ACCIDENT

The Rev. Clemons Killed While On His Way To A Picnic

Muskogee: The Rev. W. F. Clemons, one of the best known ministers in the Cherokee Nation, was killed in a peculiar manner. He resided at Bartlesville and was on his way to a Sunday School picnic. He was in a farm wagon with ten other persons. Going down a hill the harness broke, and Mr. Clemons, who had a baby in his arms, arose and started to jump out of the wagon. As he stood up a sudden movement of the horses threw him out and another man fell onto him. The wagon wheels passed of Mr. Clemon's body, causing death. The baby was not injured. Mr. Clemos was the pastor of the Chirstian church at Bartlesville.

POW/MIA, Korean War, CLEMONS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave St. Louis County, Missouri as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: CHARLES E CLEMONS
Born: July 22, 1928, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 7, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Clemons family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
