Holly--This is only info I can tell you. It's general. My branch of the Clendaniels believes they are Welsh from the Isle of Anglesy. In Welsh Gaelic the name was spelled Llan Daniel Fab. The 'll' is Welsh makes a 'Cl' sound. The phrase means "churchyard of Daniel the Younger." We also believe, but do not have certain proof of this, that the Clendaniels came to the US via Barbados. Clendaniels have been listed in ships passenger lists of the 1700s.

Even though it is probably very likely that all the Clendaniels in Delaware are related, there are links missing.

Apparently, there is a Clendaniel family cemetary somewhere downstate. Check the GenWeb Project, Delaware for more info.

The only other interesting thing of note is that I also have a cousin by the name of Holly Clendaniel who is a lawyer in Maryland.

Good luck!
Lee

downstate Clendaniels

I have come to a dead end. I'm hoping I can get people talking and make some new Clendaniel contacts. My line of Clendaniels--William and Hester Watson Clendaniel--stops at them in Kent County ca. 1800. Anyone have any little thing that might help? No anyone who might know something?

Thanks,
Lee

William was born ca. 1795 in Sussex County and Hester was born after 1800. I have no more information on either. My grandfather was George Watson Clendaniel born in Chestertown, MD in 1897 (resided in Denton, MD for many years). His brothers were William and Charles. If anyone has info to help me out, I'm trying to link us up other Delaware Clendaniels.

Beth, I have Ahab Clendaniel's last will and testament - I thought your names sounded familiar so I dug through some papers I had-
the will is dated 14 Sept 1867, has Jessefy Maklin , in parenthesis says wife of Henry Macklin, also lists other children (" my three sons" ) John, William H, and Jacob Clendaniel
(We have William H's will as well).
You can find the will at the Georgetown courthouse- upstairs in the Reg of wills office- just ask for Howard Clendaniel- he's the registar of wills right now.
By the way Ahab's will was wittnessed by Jehu H Clendaniel (H stands for Hudson)- Jehu was either George's grandson or son- George had both a son and grandson named Jehu- still figuring out which one it was.
contact me- I may have more info if I dig into more papers-

Dawn ,
I noticed you have no dates listed for the Will of George Clendaniel . What is the Date the Will was written
( ? 1851 ) and the date it was Probated ( ? 1853 ) . I am in possession of a Clendaniel Family Bible that was given to my great Aunt Mary Donovan in 1951 with the following information in it.
Jehu Clendaniel b. 14 May 1800 d. 10 January 1873 , son of George and Sarah Clendaniel . Jehu Clendaniel married Eliza Harlen 14 May 1829, b. 3 November 1798 d. 2 January 1873 , daughter of John and Grace Harlen .Son's of Jehu and Eliza Clendaniel are William Clendaniel b. 15 April 1830 d. 11 March 1865 , John Harlen Clendaniel b. 26 August 1831 d. Jan 1839 age 7 yrs. 4 mos.
My question is this .Is the George Clendaniel father of Jehu Clendaniel above , the son of George who's Will you have listed.
Cathy
