In your post on ancestry.ca in 2005 you said:-

William Glendening (b 1680 d 16 Nov 1764 in Quarterland, Ireland) and Roseanne Kirkpatrick (b 1682, Dumfries, Scotland) married in 1700 and look to have had 7 children; Jean, Elizabeth, John, Charles, James, Archibald and Andrew. William was the son of a William Glendening (b 1626) and Margaret ?.

Now, I am writing to ask what information you might have about these Glendening children in this tree.

My interest is in an artist born in 1840 to parents, James and Sarah Glendening. James' parents were John Glendening, who married Jane Jackson in Middleton Tyas which is the north west corner of Yorkshire.

This John Glendening came at one time from Carlisle or just north of there which is getting towards where the Glendening family were to be found during the Border Wars of the 1500's and early 1600's.

So I have teh problem of getting back to John's origins about the end of the 1700's.

On seeing your comments I had the feeling taht you might have some links through these children of William and Roseanne, some of whom went to Northern Ireland and perhaps (I am hoping) some who stayed in the English/Scottish borders.

Can you let me know what you can and if you are still following all this along.

The artist I am researching was very prolific and his son has work in London's Tate Gallery.

Thanks

David

Ulysses S. G. Clendenin, son of James and Elizabeth, married Cora D. Blacksley in St. Joseph Co., MI 8 Sep 1889. This record names Cora's parents as John Blacksley and [?] Riddle. The mother's name is unclear and could be Susan or Tamson. Is Cora the same Cora who is identified on the 1880 St. Joseph Co. census as the 7-year-old daughter of John Williams and his wife Tamson Riddle Williams? Were there 2 Coras?; if not, was Cora a Blacksley or a Williams? Are there any Clendenin researchers who know Cora Clendenin's parentage?

I am trying to locate information on a John Clendening born in Virginia around 1820-1830 or so. But died in Audrian County, Missouri. He married Judy/Julia Shepherd in 1859 and died by 1860 when Judy/Julia gave birth to Missouri Bell Clendening. This is all I know of John.

We are hunting for Andrew Glendinning who signed his son's
wedding certificate in Londonderry 1859. His son William was my husband's great grandfather and he married Jane Milligan of Londonderry. We have William's will but can find no trace of Andrew unless he married a Nancy Purvis in Moneymore,co.Londonderry in 1833.He is said to be a farmer on the certificate. We are trying to link this part of the Glendinning family to the Londonderry Standard as William was its proprietor. We also think the family might have originally come from Scotland or Northumberland but cannot find a link from Ireland to either of these.I really am stuck: can anybody help me,please?
Janet Glendinning
Withey Family Tree

Clendenin in Lebanon

According to the bio for my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Cosmus S. Clendenin in "History of Cumberland and Adams Counties, Pennsylvania" (Warner Beers, 1886, p492), Cosmus S. was born in Lebanon County to William Clendenin and Mary M. (Snoke) Clendenin. William and Mary Clendenin had three children, William (b.1827), the aforementioned Cosmus S. (b.1833) and Mary A. (b.1842).

The 1850 census for Derry Township, Dauphin County clearly shows William Clendenin (aged 50), Mary (aged 45) and the three children by name, as well as, apparently, Mary's father Henry Snoke (aged 75 in 1850). Everything connects the Cosmus S. Clendenin bio to this William Clendenin (including the shared trade of shoemaker).

The 1840 census only confirms head of family, but William Clendenin is there and the appropriate ages for most others in the family seem to be present.

In the Campbelltown section of "History of the Counties of Dauphin and Lebanon" (Egle, Everts & Peck, 1883, p219), there are a William (b.Feb1800-d.1874) and Mary Clendenin (b.Oct1807-d.April1877) listed as buried in the Salem Church (Luthern and Reformed). The dates seem correct so I am guessing this is the father of Cosmus S. Clendenin and, therefore, my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather.

What I am looking for is any information regarding William Clendenin (b.1800) and Mary Snoke (b.1807), such as where they originated from, parents names, property, etc. As a PA expat living in the United Kingdom, being so far away it is difficult for me to push further than the information I now have. Elsewhere (http://www.chm.davidson.edu/PAGenWeb/Q1998.html) someone asked about a "Cocmus or John Clendenin who are buried in Campbelltown, Lebanon co. circa 1780" and this intrigued me immensely given Cosmus apparently numerous times in the Clendenin family between 1833 and 1885.

Thomas Rufus Clendinen

Thomas Rufus Clendinen, a Virginia Military Institute cadet who participated in the Battle of New Market, was taken to Harpers Ferry for burial from the last account we have. I'm helping a few VMI alumni who for the past two and a half years have been trying to find the graves of the all the New Market Cadets. We have successfully narrowed our list of about 290 cadets to less than 30 whose final resting place is unknown. Thomas Rufus Clendinen is one of the missing.

According to the Francis Gasch's funeral home book,Thomas R. Clendinen died 26 Mar 1910 in Riverdale, MD. The remains were moved to Union Station in DC and the funeral service at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Another news clipping states Bolivar, Va. is where he was taken for burial.

VMI archives say:
Thomas Rufus Clendinen, Class of 1867: New Market Cadet; Private, Co. D. Genealogy: Born- March 31, 1847, in Baltimore, Md. Father- Dr. Alexander Clendinen; Mother- Marie Louise Belt. Pat. Grandparents- unknown. Mat.
Grandparents- unknown. Married- 1st Wife: Alice Shriver; 2nd Wife: Mary H. English, in 1908. Children- 1st Marriage: 1st: Alice; 2nd: Rose. Career: Lawyer. Died- March 25, 1910, at Riverdale, Prince George Co., Md.

Any information you may have is greatly appreciated!

My website http://www.picturetrail.com/vminewmarket explains the Battle of New Market and has photos of all the graves we have found so far.

Thanks,

Sarah Reveley
San Antonio, Texas
Hello Wendy,

Could you give us some more details? For example, I've made the assumption that your grandfather is alive? You said his name was Charles Burton Clendenin the second. Then you made the assumption that his father had the same name.

That's not necessarily true. If his father had the same name then your grandfather would probably have been Junior, rather than the second.

When was your grandfather born? Do you know the names of any brothers and sisters of his?

We may have the information you need and not necessarily be aware of it.

Too many Clendenins in WV to make this easy.

Thanks,

Sharon

CLENDENEN -Sylvester, David, Andrew

My grandmother was Ruby Clendenen Quandt b.Oct. 1898 m. Eles Quandt; d. Apr 1970

According to info that she gave me.....
Her father was John Henry Clendenen b. Jan. 30, 1865; m. Mary Agnes Scroggins (b. Feb. 9, 1860)
They are both buried in the Steenbergen Cemetery near Mt. Pulaski, Logan Co. IL

His father was Sylvester Clendenen b. 1825, m. Bathesheba Jones (b.1836, Hallsville, Ross Co. OH; d.1916) d. 1914
They are both buried in the Steenbergen Cemetery - as above
children of Sylvester and Bathsheba:
James, Taylor, William, George, John H., Charles, Melvina (Minnie), Anna, Mary Jane (died in infancy)

Sylvester's father was supposedly David - supposedly born in PA - I think my notes read ca. 1800.....Later comes to OH

David's father - supposedly Andrew...supposedly born in IRE, lived in Ohio - spouse unknown and supposedly had at least two sisters......Hannah and Thema (possilby Thelma).

Andrew's parents are unknown.

If anyone has any information on Sylvester, David or Andrew it would be most appreciated as I can find no real record (other than the cemetery listing) for Sylvester and don't think that the David Clendenen in Cumberland Co. PA is connected - but - I could be wrong. The only Andrew that I have found is the one in the list of William Clendenin's children being born in 1757(which kind of makes "dates" sense). Is there a list of this Andrew's children anywhere? Can anyone help?

Sharon Bryant, I have so many conflecting info. that I don't know where to turn. I want to trace my Clendening line back to where the first one came to America. Do you have documentation on all the records that you have? I would like to compare notes with you to see where I have gone wrong.
Leona,
William Glendening (b 1680 d 16 Nov 1764 in Quarterland, Ireland) and Roseanne Kirkpatrick (b 1682, Dumfries, Scotland) married in 1700 and look to have had 7 children; Jean, Elizabeth, John, Charles, James, Archibald and Andrew. William was the son of a William Glendening (b 1626) and Margaret ?. If you go up this tree far enough and look at the branches for both husbands and wives you will find that you are in part descended from almost all of the royal houses of Europe to include, Italy, France, England, and Scotland. Charlemagne is in there along with William the Great and Robert the Bruce. I am from the line which runs from William/Roseanne to Charles/ Mary Ann Patterson to Robert/Margaret Flether(?) to John/Rebecca de France to Robert/Harriet Blackwell to Thomas B/Isabella Turner to James W. Kilborn/Harriet Belle Clendenin. Best, Scott

If the Robert born in 1770 married a Harriet Blackwell then they are the parents of Thomas B. Clendenin who is the father of my g-grandmother Harriet Belle Clendenin Kilborn. If the John Clendenin born in 1759 married an Eleanor Landon and that union begat Margaret J. Clendenin then she is the mother of my paternal g-grandfather James Warren Kilborn...who married the aforementioned Harriet B. Clendenin. I have seen some of the Clendenin plots up in Trout Run, PA. They are verywhere and there was a lto of marrying between Kilborns, Clendenins and a family named Heebe. Now, the Kilborns can trace their entry into the US back to a single individual and year, can the Clendenins? From whence does the family hail? Scotland? Is there a clan we claim to be a part (sept) of and/or a tartan we lay claim to? Any info is, obviously, welcome and appreciated! Best, Scott

Carolyn,

The 1850 census for Tennessee has several entries for Dortons in Maury Co., TN including a Brittain Dorton, 63, farmer, b NC. Adult female is Nancy Dorton, 63, b NC. There are several children there including an Elizabeth, 20, b NC. The youngest child in the household is 12, born in Tennessee so it appears that they had been in Tennessee since about 1838.

I would suggest the name was Brittain and whoever posted the Brillion name was just unable to read the handwriting or whatever they were looking at.

Hope this helps,

Sharon Bryant

Leah,

As I was reading over your lineage as you posted it I realized there was an error:

26. Griffen Clendenin was the son of George Clendenin and Margaret Edwards. Married 13 Sep 1811, most likely Mason Co., VA. George was the son of Alexander and Catherine Spencer Clendenin.

Also, there is circumstantial evidence based on census reports and tax records that Ancil R. Clendenin was the son of John and Polly McKinney Clendenin.

Sharon

We have found them listed here at rootsweb as Brillion Dorton and Nancy Cox, both born North Carolina. I am wondering if this was his real name or does someone have proof out there that his name was Brillion?
Thomas and Melvina had a son Fisher Britton Clendenin. I was wondering if maybe fisher hadn't gotten his name from both of his grandfathers. This is just a thought that I had had since I cannot find any information what so ever on him other than the message that had been posted here by Candyce. If anyone has any information of Melvina Dorton Clendenin please contact me at scarlet@camtel.net

I have msg about a Thomas Young of KY who married a Elizabeth? of PA & msg about Elizabeth Clendenin marrying a Thomas H Young (but no info on Thomas H). The time frames are correct 1780-1790, does anyone have a connection between these two families?

Thanks
Ty Young
