Clendennen's of Pa.

I am interested in anybody with information about the Clendennen's of Western Pa, Tarentum, Natrona Heights, Butler, those areas. I have Elizabeth Clendennen married to Erastus Chappel and many more Clendennen's in the family tree. I think that Nancy Davis(married John Fox) was also somehow related to the Clendennen's. Eliza Chappel was living with the Davis's in the 1850 census. Anybody interested or with info to share please email me.

Thanks
Colleen

Spelling variations

The Clendennen spelling is one of over 30 spelling variations of the descendants of Adam Gledonwyn of Scotland who founded the clan back around the 12th or 13th century. Supposedly the "official" spelling is Glendinning as there is a small settlement in Southern Scotland with that name and spelling. One of my ancestors was a schoolmaster in Co. Londonderry, Ireland and adopted that spelling as it is believed that his father's name was spelled as "Clandenning". The problem is that most people were illiterate a couple of centuries ago and names were entered as clergyman heard it into parish registers. The result is that there are many families who have different spellings so there is really no "correct" spelling. The thing is that you must find out how your ancestors spelled the name but you will likely encounter changes in spelling for each generation as you go further back.

Talking about spelling variations! Sorry about the error in my last message. I spelled Adam's name incorrectly "Gledonwyn" when it should read "Glendonwyn". Most spellings of the name start with "Glen-" or "Clen-" but some families dropped those prefixes so there are "Dennings", "Dinnings", etc.

I, for one, would be very interested to know about anyone who has this name. I assumed that this particular spelling, which originated in the 12th or 13th century, did not persist as a surname into the modern era.

If indeed it has, your friend's family history would be an important path to follow in researching the original name and how it has evolved into many variations.

SCOTT GLENDONWYN

I´m helping a student of mine(Spanish) who is married to a descendent of the Scott family. The father-in-law has been working on the family tree for years. They go back to Sir Walter Scott. They´re branch finished up in Spain and Venezuela. The father-in-law´s mother or grand mother retained the Scott Glendonwyn name on marriage instead of the more boring Garcia, her husband. They know that part of the family came from Parton in Scotland and went to San Roque in Cadiz,Spain.WE can´t find when Scott and Glendonwyn came together and why and also who they were.
