Hi Dory,
I've noticed your group of "New Jersey Clendenney" researchers and wonder if there might be a connection to my ancestor, James Clendening, U.E. (b. ca. 1740's) He resided in Sussex Co. N.J. before the American Revolution. He had a brother John, I refer to him as John of Markham (York Co, Upper Canada). John's U.C. Land Petitions tend to use the spelling "Clendenney". I've done quite a bit of research with Upper Canada records, but cannot find a further link from these as to who their ancesters might be, although I have a number of unsubstantiated clues which might link back to N.J. & N.Y. (Staten Island). From the bit of research I have done with N.J. & N.Y. records, this spelling seems to be geographically specific. I've been trying to piece together some of the N.J. & N.Y. (Richmond Co) Clendenney, but the early records are so hard to link up. I would love to compare notes and see if there is a possible connection. Lee

Just happened on your message. My Great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all Merseles George Clendenny. My gg and grandfather were born in Jersey City. I beleive that my gg"s father was also Merseles. Note the different spelling, but probably the same name.

hello aunt sherry! LOL, I read part of the message from Eve then saw part of the message that said u were chuck's youngest daughter, took me a second to realize it was u...old age getting to me, i guess we both are doing the same, trying to find other Clendenney's out there!

wow, aunt gladys, i havent heard that name n a long time, i remember her and ann visiting when i was a child

I am looking for the parents of Eleanor Clendenny, born 1782 in Jersey City or that area. Thought for years she was daughter of Walter and Osseltje but know that she is not. Any clues? Eleanor married Hartman Brinkerhoff in 1802. Thanks!

My pleasure Eve, I am Chuck's youngest daughter, and I remember your dad and your uncle Bob.(vaguely, they are older then I am, and where closer in age to my older siblings.) I believe that as a younger child we have probably met. Your Uncle Bob, is living not to far from my mother. And I believe, last year he may have been in touch with her, when we lost my oldest brother to cancer. We lost my Dad ,Chuck, in 1999. I would be happy to share what little information I have with you, but I am curious if you have been able to obtain information from June or Ann? I do not live in an area where any of my relatives live, but i'm always interested in our family history, probably more now that I am older than before. Look forward to hearing from you. Sherry

I'm Rollie's great grandaughter. You must be a daughter of one of my grandmother Gladys's siblings. There is Chuck, Dwight, Anne and June. My name is Eve English. My father is Jim (James) English. He's Gladys's middle son. She had three boys. Gary, Jim & Bob (Robert).

Charles Delbert's son Rollie was my great grandfather. I have his birth certificate and it says that he is the 2nd born twinn and that Anna Mae Carpenter/Clendenney had 4 living children at the time of, and including his birth. He was born Dec 4 1882 and died in 1865. I would love info on my clendenney & carpenter ancestors.

Charles Delbert Clendenney married Anna Mae Carpenter who was born in Michigan. They are my gg grandparents. My great grandfather was Rollie Clendenney and at the time of (& including his own)birth, Anna Mae had 4 children. She may have had more later? He is listed as the 2nd born twin. I'm guessing that the twin was a sister since I can't find a death record on another Clendenney with the same birth date. She might have married and been listed as another name. Rollie married Lillian Humphrey and I have tons on that side but nothing of my Clendennys. Help if you can

On July 27, 1849 Ursular Clendenny daughter of James , married William Balser-Baulsir. This appeared in the Brooklyn Eagle. The Baulsirs are my family. E-mail me.

Clendennys - Osseltje (Ursula),Walter,Merselis,etc.

Hi all, I think we all are from the same Clendennys. I have some documentation from the Demarest Family book because Osseltje Durie Clendenny's mother was Geesje Demarest born 12 September 1744 and her father was Jacobus Durie born 24 June 1744, all born in Schralenburg. I found the connection with Osseltje because of the 1850 census in Jersey City where Osseltje was living with her daughter, Jane, who was married three times: Samuel Lamb, Hugh McCutcheon, and a William Clayborn. Fortunately Osseltje was still living for the 1850 census. She died at age 81. The Demarest book states that they think "Walter Clendenny" was from Staten Island. The confusion stems from the fact that there were two Walter Clendennys as contemporaries in Jersey City which is where Walter and Osseltje moved after their marriage in Ridgewood, NJ. So, I have tried for some time to find out where Walter came from. I see some spellings Klindinni?? Anyway we three can consolidate our research? Thank you, Dory at dskemp1@cox.net P.S. I have a James Peter Merselis Clendenny born 03 August 1805 in Jersey City. He would have named his daughter after his mother, Osseltje Durie. I'd love to find a connection.

I think we have a match because our Clendennys both came out of Jersey City and my 3rd great grandmother's (Jane Clendenny 1.Lamb 2.Mccutcheon 3. Claybourne) brother's name was James Peter Merselis Clendenny born 03 August 1805 -- so that Merselis name was floating around the family. I would like to research this more. I'm interested about the Scottish info that you may have. I'm so sorry I haven't checked the board in so long...but I will do so now. Dory

Oh my gosh, I have an Ursula Clendenny in my tree!! My Ursula was Osseltje Durie born 20 January 1769 and she married Walter Clendenny in about 1791. Ursula/Osseltje born is my 4th g-grandmother. Do we have a match???? . Please feel free to contact me at dskemp1@cox.net. Dory

Did u see a family resembelance,so you see any of youre ancestors facial features in my picuture,you did didnt you??The eyes give it away.So does the forehead.No,as a matter of fact,I live In Union Beach new jersey now,but I grew up In Brooklyn New York,and St.Johns newfoundland(we spent our summers in St.Johns my maternal grandparents were from there.)Ive done quite a bit of research on the Illinois clendennys,they probably are distant cousins.Theyre are also some in Orange county New York.

Wrong gender, right color eyes, blue. Do you live in Ill, near St. Louis? That's where a lot of Clendennys are in a county whose county seat is called "Jerseyville".

I found a baptism record for a Dorie clendenny in Staten Island,1763.the reason I asked about the health problems is because both my father and my aunt died of lung problems,and asthma runs in my family.If you do find a connection please let me know.Did you take a look at the picture I sent,do you see any family resemblance?

I am not aware of any Clendennys in Staten Island, although it is just across the river from my hometown of Rahway, NJ. I beleive the surname is Scottish, and that somehow, the original Clendennys came and settled New York (New Amsterdam) with the Dutch and moved to Jersey City, NJ. I have some records of Clendenny farms in the area.

I am not aware of any particular health problems.

My uncle william clendenny is buried in a staten island methodist cemetery.I never thought of staten island,but youve given me some clues as to where to look,thank you.
I am attaching a picture of me,if it shows any family resemblance,please let me know,out of all my sibliings,I am the one that has my fathers features.

I dont know that much about my father family.Could the Walter,that was born in the 1800's be my great great grandfather?.My sister said there was a henry clendenny,from new jersey,she has an article about him,I can find out, from her if you'd like me to.
clendenny is not a common name,and my fathers family was scotch.That's what i was told when I was little.When my father died,we became estranged from his side of the family,it is a long story!

I have twins in my family,and my grandfthers name was Waller,according to the 1935 census.Could there be a connection between you and me?You can email me directly,if you think there is.We were from Brooklyn NY,but it might be possible they they came here via jersey,and Staten island.

Thanks for your reply as I hit dead ends with the Clendennys.

My first Clendenny that I can find is my gggg-grandfather Walter Clendenny from NJ/NY. He was born in, I think, Ridgewood NJ, in 1765. He married my gggg-grandmother, Osseltje Durie (b. 1769 in Schraalenburgh, Bergen, NJ) in 1791in Ridgewood. They had the following children:
John christened 10 April 1792 at the DRC in Paramus, NJ
Sally christened 8 Dec 1793 in Bergen, NJ
Jane christened 11 Dec 1796 in Bergen, NJ (Jane was my ggg-grandmother who was married three times: 1) Samuel Lamb, 2) Hugh McCutcheon (my ggg-grandfather) and 3) William Claybourne
Mary christened 10 Feb 1799 in Bergen, NJ
Rebecca christened 12 April 1800 in Bergen, NJ(m. John Cole)
Walter, Jr. christened 6 Feb 1803 in Bergen, NJ
James christened 5 Dec 1805 in Bergen, NJ

The confusion over the first Walter that I have b. in 1765 is that there appear to be two Walter Clendennys who were contemporaries and both in Jersey City, NJ. And there may be a possibility that one -- or both-- may have originated in Staten Island.

Your John (and Sarah Clendenny) may very well be a grandson of the oldest son John of Walter and Osseltje. As I am trying to follow down from Walter and Osseltje through their daughter Jane, I don't know where the other Clendennys went. I cannot track Walter's death but Osseltje lived in Jersey City until she died in 1851.

My Clendenny side moved from Jersey City to Rahway, NJ at the turn of last century. My great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all Meseles George Clendenny. I beleive another side of the family moved to Bergen County, NJ around the same time. My great-grandfather I beleive had a twin, Walter(?), but they were estranged.

Early research years ago found birth certificats in Jersey City back to about 1701 when they first started to keep them. Family history was that they were Scot dissenters who came to NY with the Dutch in the late 1600's..

ok if this message is not too old i knew my uncle Jack Clendenny and he died in 1985 and Aunt Flossie died in 1977 in Pleasant Hill IL
i have other contacts who would know more and i have more data here on hand
