MARY YEOMANS CLENDENNING b: abt 1725 Augusta, VA

Looking for info. on MARY YEOMANS CLENDENNING b: abt 1725 in Augusta, VA and died 1798 possibly in Scott City, VA.
Her parents were: Archibald Clendenning and Esther Ann Mayse.
I'm trying to find if she was ever married to William "Thomas" Gillespie of Tazewell, VA. They would have been marriaged abt 1745. Children: Robert b: 1747, Mary b: 1749,
Nancy b: 1750, James b: 1751, John b: 1753, Agnes b: 1755, Thomas b: 1757, William b: 1761, and Elizabeth b: 1763. These names and dates of birth were on Ancestry.com OneWorldTree. I haven't been able to substantiate any of this info. Why I'm needing this is because the ANNALS OF TAZEWELL, VA has that William "Thomas" Gillespie's WILL indicates that his wife was Eleanor and they list some of these names as his children but they also list other names too. Don't know if he was married to Mary Y. Clendenning first and when she died he married this Eleanor. Any info. would be most appreciated. Thanks, Lisa

Charles Washington Clendenning

Charles Washington Clendenning, farmer, Bakerstown, is supposed to be the oldest resident of Allegheny county, and having celebrated his centennial anniversary in May, 1888, was invited by the board of county commissioners to attend the anniversary of Allegheny county. He was born May 20, 1788, in County Westmeath, Ireland, son of Arthur and Margaret (Watson) Clendenning, natives of County Donegal, Ireland. Mr. Clendenning was the oldest of eight children, and at the age of twenty-two he moved to Meadville, Crawford county, Pa., where he thrashed buckwheat. He was a weaver in the old country and did some work in that line in Meadville during his first winter here. Six months later he came to this county, and for six years distilled whiskey for Robert Porter.

Mr. Clendenning married, Dec. 20, 1822, Martha Ross Porter, who was born in York county, April 7, 1795, and died aged sixty-seven years. Her parents, Robert and Elizabeth Porter, came here in an early day from Eastern Pennsylvania. Mr. Clendenning had six children:

John Clendenning
Robert Porter Clendenning
William Ross Clendenning
Eliza Jane Clendenning
Arthur Clendenning
Margaret Ellen Clendenning, died Aug. 4, 1852, aged 17

John and Robert manage the old home farm.

Robert was married March 12, 1866, to Catherine Bomin, a native of Germany, who came to this country when three years of age. Their children, all at home, are:

Martha Ann Clendenning
Charles Watson Clendenning
William John Clendenning
Margaret Ellen Clendenning
Ross Porter Clendenning
Andrew Harper Clendenning
Robert Hood Clendenning

The family are members of Hood's M. P. Church, and all are republicans.

Mr. Clendening settled on his present farm in 1826, clearing it from woods. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and for four years was town supervisor. He is a great lover of bees, and at his advanced age of one hundred years continues to care for them. He still retains an excellent memory. He is respected by all who know him, and has ever striven to maintain the right, and to uphold the true dignity of labor.

Source: Original data: History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; Chicago, Ill.: A.
Clendenning Family-Chickasha (Grady County) Oklahoma

I am researching information regarding my grandfather, John Homer Woodruff Jr.

I found that his sister Edna Woodruff married Fred B. Clendenning. Fred is the son of Luther and Quolize Clendenning. They all resided in Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1920, confirmed by the 1920 Census.

A death notice for Edna Woodruff Clendenning's mother, Emma Bell Woodruff from October 31, 1944 indicate she and husband Fred resided in Oklahoma City at that time.

I located a burial record for Edna in the Rosehill Cemetery located in Chickasha, Oklahoma indicating she died in August 1972.

My grandfather, his father and mother and brothers, Eugene and Elmer and sisters Grace, Hazel and Edith showed to also be living in Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1918, but are not shown on the 1920 Census at which time they had moved to Oklahoma City.

Apparently the Clendenning family owned a grocery store in Chickasha, Oklahoma and John Homer Woodruff Jr. worked there also. The unusal deal about all this, John Homer Woodruff Junior's father was not John Homer Woodruff Senior
but was John W. Woodruff. Apparently he may have been named for a grandfather.

Also the 1920 Census for Chickasha, Oklahoma indicates another Woodruff family, Roy, wife and children to be living across the street from the Clendennings and also working in the grocery business.
Hi Gwennyth, thank you so much for doing some detective work for me. That's very kind of you. Jessi, John and Beatrice would all be Clendennings. I'm not sure who the J & J Lawsons are but I suspect I might be connected to them somehow. I actually have Lawson cousins living in Orillia however, they know nothing of the Clendenning line. Seems Norman wasn't really around the family for long so he hasn't left much of a mark on my family. I do know his mother had so many children that she was in the government sponsored race to have as many children as possible. So someone out there must know my grandfather. I shall keep searching. Thank you again for trying to help. I appreciate it. Cindy

I understand that you are interested in finding relatives of Norman Clendenning who had a daughter connected to the name Lawson. Seeing it was in the Orillia Ont. area I have looked up the name Lawson in the phone book and understand the some of the names were Jessie and John. I have found a J&J Lawson address 1292 Silver Creek Estates Orillia. As this is a community of senior residences it is possible that they might be connected to whom you are looking.
I hope this helps. Gwennyth

My grandfather's name was Eugene Clendenning and his family came to Rochester, NY via Canada. His father was Eugene Jay Clendenning and was born about July 1869 and died February 1, 1937. His father was William Clendenning and was born about 1835 in Canada. I found the folloing on William:

History of Livingston County, NY - Smith (qr974.785 s651h)
Clendening William, PO Avon, grain and stock farmer, 452 acres, born Canada 1835, settled 1850, is present excise commissioner; father Alex Clendening; wife Sophia Hall, born Bronson Hill; children two, Frank, Eugene.

I also have information that William had a daughter Esther who was born in Michigan (1870 Census).

No information regarding Wisconsin.

Michael Serafin

Norman Clendenning, Ontario 1900's

I am seeking information about my grandfather Norman Clendenning. Norm married Pearl Lawson in Orillia Ontario 1923. She gave birth to my mother Helen Lorine in 1925 then died 3 weeks later. Helen was taken under the care of Pearl's parents (Cyrus and Gertrude Lawson). They eventually adopted her. Norm remarried and had another daughter Norma (she'd be about 75 now). My mother had little to no contact with Norm's family and can not offer much information. Norm did come from a large family and a few of his siblings were John, Jessi/e and Beatrice. Does anyone know anything about this family? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Cindy

F. W. CL=lendenning obituary 1896 - Tampa Tribune

"Deplorable Death. - The death on Friday of Mr. F. W. Clendenning of Thonotosassa has cast a momentary gloom over that neighborhood. From the first of his sickness it became evident to his devoted wife, brothers and sister that death was only a question of no great distance of time; and yet it was sooner than expected. Mr. Clendenning was a young man of rare gifts both of heart and mind. Affable in manners, graceful in Methodistic predilections, skillful in the art of teaching and greatly devoted to his relatives and friends, he will be missed incalculably both at home and abroad, while his young and now deeply depressed widow has but just begun to realize the awful truth that "Death enters and there's no defence." "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace."

Published in the Tampa Morning Tribune, Sunday, March 29, 1896, p. 4, col. 2.

Anyone out there have Clendenning family who may have emigrated from Ireland to Canada or the US between 1820 and 1830?
I am seeking information on the family of Mary Ann Clendenning reportedly born in Ireland about 1818 according to Indiana records. She was known to be in Indiana in 1835 the wife of John Old.
Thanks in advance for any information, Marilyn in Vegas
