I am researching the Clenney line for my cousin. I have discovered Reuben Clenney was her 3rd great grandfather by his son Francis Marion, by his son Joe Lee, by his son Rudolph. Her father was Benny Joe, the only child to Rudolph and Elizabeth Brownlee Clenney. At Benny's birth, his name was registered as Clenny, so his children's last name is spelled without the extra "E". I am trying to find out as much information as possible since Benny passed away unexpectly this past May. His daughter has never known her Clenney family and has become interested in locating them. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Re: Clenney,,Cleneay PA, DE

I'm quite sure (and still trying to prove) that I descend from your Mary Cleneay's brother, William, (son of William and Maria (SPRINGER). My William was baptized in 1719 at Holy Trinity (Old Swede's) Church, in Christina (now Newcastle) DE. I believe your Mary was born (not married) in 1726 in Newcastle, DE. I haven't noticed her marriage listed in the Old Swede's records online, so she may have married James in PA.
I live in PA, just over the state line from DE, and didn't know until I had lived here for 10 years (I'm from the midwest), that I had ancestral history in my back yard. I plan to do some serious research at Old Swede's, the DE Historical Society, Newcastle library, etc. I've been to Historic Newcastle and all the beautiful old buildings, including Old Swede's, but that was before I even knew that the Cleneays and Springers were part of my line.
I don't know if any of the Cleneays deliberately used the alternate spellings we see, but the name does lend itself to misspelling and mistranscription! I have seen it spelled CLENEAY, CLEANY, CLEANEY, CLENNY, CLENNEY, KLENNY, CLENNAY, CLENEY, CLEANEAY, CLINNY, CLEENY, CLEANAY, and even CLEMCY, CENSAY and CLENCAY (in transcriptions).
I recently discovered that Winterthur, the beautiful duPont estate and gardens that I visit regularly, was bought from the "CLENNY" family in the late 1700s or the early 1800s, and the creek that runs through it is called "Clenny's Run".
My Cleneays migrated from DE to NC, and then up in KY in the early 1800s and then to southern OH. (I believe they went to NC around the 1760s). My records show that your Mary and husband went to NC at some point, too. Where did they go from there?
I'd love to compare and share information with you.
Ann

GerriAnn,
I am also looking for that line. James and Mary were first cousins, grandchildren of Carl Christophersson Springer and Maria Hendricksdotter of New Castle, DE. The Cleneays were French Huguenots. (I do not know where the McClenny/Clenny thing comes from, it's later I guess). Cleneay's name morphed into Clenny--his farm remained in the family until about 1811 when it was turned into part of the Winterthur property. CC Springer and Maria were both members of the Old Swedes Church and have a huge descendance. Google Christopher Springer. There was a great hoax in the 19th century by a Moses Springer inventing all sorts of connections to him. But Clenny and Hall and their descendants are real. He was the kidnapped son of Swedish court officials (true) who was indentured in Virginia while studying in London. Once free, he travelled to find the other Swedes.
I am about 10th generation from them. Hall and Clenny's family is very large--North Carolina mostly and then outward. Our family is from their daughter Deborah Hall who married Thomas Davis (family via Baltimore to NC, Orange County), and they were loyalists to the British Crown who went en masse with his uncle William Alexander Davis and their families to what became Upper Canada. Halls were English, Quakers. Lots of Quakers went to North Carolina. This is an interesting line.
Email me: bacres@gtn.net. I had a brief correspondence with Dr. Peter Craig of the Swedish genealogical society about this.
Bill Acres

Charles, do you have any family photos of 2nd wife of "Hark" Clenney and/or do you know anything about her?

I research line of Hark's 2nd wife; I am trying to add her into the GATHINGS line. Documenting the Gathings family of Decatur Co. TN is like trying to catch hold of a cloud. Some of the Gathings first in Perry Co, then DeCoTn, first went to Louisiana and then onto Texas, others went straight to Texas so I am told.

Thank you very much for responding and any help is greatly appreciated. Linda.

Name: Alva Harkins "Hark" Clenney
Sex: M
Birth: 3 APR 1825 in Anson Co., NC
Death: 5 DEC 1915 in Scotts Hill, Decatur Co., TN
Burial: DEC 1915 Bethel Cemetery, Deactur Co., TN

John, re: CLENNEY of Anson Co. NC. Can tell you that many of the Clenney people buried in Bethel Cem., Decatur Co. TN were from Anson Co. NC or descend from Clenneys who came from Anson Co NC.

I am reserching the 2nd wife of this man:
Name: Alva Harkins "Hark" Clenney
Sex: M
Birth: 3 APR 1825 in Anson Co., NC
Death: 5 DEC 1915 in Scotts Hill, Decatur Co., TN
Burial: DEC 1915 Bethel Cemetery, Deactur Co., TN

His tombstone says that Alva came to Decatur Co. TN when he was ca 14 yrs. old from Anson Co. NC.

Alva CLENNEY married Francis E.M. GATHINGS, she is sometimes referred to as "Minerva". Minerva was born 1834 in probably Perry Co. TN. She was buried in Bethel Cem. DeCoTN. Here's where it gets interesting. Minerva's parents are believed to have come from Anson Co. NC. Speculation is that her father was John Gathings/Gathing from Anson Co. NC and her mother was probably Margery UNKNOWN Gathings ?b NC.

Maybe above info will be of some help to you.

Linda (desc. of GATHINGS of Decatur Co. TN, specifically Scotts Hill, TN)

I have alot of infomation on his second family.
He married again and had `2 son's Casey and Clancy, and a daughter named Colleen. None of these children had middle names. They are my cousins and we were a very close family growing up.
The first son, Casey Clenney was killed in a auto accident in
1967 in the San Fernando Valley, Ca. Casey was 18 at the time and we were very close. The family lived in Granada Hills at the time.

Please let me know what you would like to know and I will try to answer your questions.

jentami

Hi Clay,
I saw your post asking about Reuben being the son of William and Phereby Lee. I guess there is no way to really prove our claim that these are the parents of Reuben. I have done lots of research on the Reuben Clenney family. This family had the tendency to name their children after their
brothers and sisters. The name Reuben Crawford is in many of the Clenney family names. I think you are the grandson of
Charles Wilson (Doll) Clenney who lived just outside of Edison,Ga. and your mother's name is Norma? Am I right?
I am the granddaughter of Robert Lee Clenney a brother of
Charles Wilson's. My mother still to this day lives in Edison, Ga. Most of our Clenney's as you know are buried in Mars
Hill Cemetery. My mother swears that Reuben's middle name
was Crawford. and She swears that Pherby Lee was the
gggrandmother thus the middle name of my grandfather
Robert Lee. I've even had people tell me that Reuben Clenney
and William McClenney were not brothers but I think they are
simply using the name sources again because Willaim McClenny named one of his sons Reuben Crawford and our
Reuben named one of his sons William.
