My paternal grandmother was Anna Belle Clepper. I have traced her lineage back to 1793,John San Clepper. I am unable to go back further. I think his father was John Clepper, born in PA. Most of my relatives were from Jefferson County,PA although I found John San Clepper, born 1793 was born in Lancater, PA and apparently move to Jefferson County. John San Clepper was born in 1870 and married Amelia Graul/Grual.

His grandfather's name is Leland Howard Clepper (married Helen Irene Clark). Leland Father's name was Howard Herbert Clepper (married Louise Beck, who i also have no information on). Howard's father was Wilson John Clepper. I'm not sure of dates for Wilson, but if it helps, his son was born in 1850 and died in 1915.

Hi, Fred,

Just saw your post on Ancestry.com for me. You are so right in most of what you are saying but this one thing I think you will need to reconsider - the Klepper/Clepper bunch you are describing DID visit for a while in all the states you list. We are just different branches with the VA, TN, TX, etc., bunch being of the same branch. And, by the way, I believe you are also a part of this branch. Dixie has the WHOLE story. You can also check the Library of Congress, as well as the library in Whitwell, Marion County, TN for a book. Both libraries will help you. Dixie has a GEDCOM file, I believe, too.
Gregory,

Thanks for your response to my last message.

I have almost given up on tracing my family tree! There are so many sources of information that It is mind boggling!

At first, I thought my ancestors were of German decent. I now hear that there were a lot of Cleppers from England. Most of the people that I have contacted in this country claim that the Clepper name was derived from Klepper which is a German name.

I am beginning to think that most of the commercial Ancestry sites are strictly out for money and I doubt that most of their claims are valid. I have found so many branches of the Clepper / Klepper name that I feel that most researchers are going in circles.

Clepper families jump from Pennsylvania to Texas and return through Tennessee and other points west.

My family ended up in Cumberland County, PA! I think the family moved through Lancaster, York and Adams Counties before ending in Cumberland. Some of the early Cleppers may have gone on to KY, VA. TN or even TX but I doubt that any of them ever came back to PA.

I have a very good record of my Clepper family forward from my GGGF Phillip Clepper (1813-1900) and his wife Rachel Rockey (1815-1884).

I will be glad to swap information with you if you send me your email address

Thanks,
Fred Clepper (fclepper@verizon.net)

Yes, we are kin. It is wonder to hear from someone else in the family. If you send me your e mail address I can let you visit my on line family tree. Then you can see for yourself waht I have. It appears that James Klepper/Clepper was the one that changed the family name from a K to a C. That is what I have been told. So therefore the Kleppers are kin too. I have it that James was born in 1793. Is this what you have too? From the info that I have Mary Angeline Clepper was born in Jan. 19, 1822. James had 13 children by Christine Collier. Angelines full brother John is my ggg frand father. James had * more kids with Mary Jones after Christine passed. So that is a total of 21 children. So we have a big family. Would be interested in sharing more info as would other family members. Please reply.

There was a photo of my uncle with another child that she refer to as wally jr. I dont know if it could be your father as a child or not. Or we could be of some relation. But I have the photo. Maybe this could be of some help to you.

I hope I didn't confuse you with the szterhan spelling, that is the slavic spelling. my grandfather Simon, his two brothers and sister were all born in Lugoj or Istvanfalva, and all but my grandfather are buried there. Simon came to the U.S. in 1912. Simon the great grandfather was the one married to Anna Szterhan. The senior Simon was born in 1851, died 1931. Wife Anna was born in 1874 and died in 1915 and is buried in Darova (Istvanfalva). Your Anna could very well be our mutual great grand mother. Joseph came with Elizabeth along with my grandfather. Elizabeth took ill and returned to Hungary.Joseph followed later but didn't get back before his wife died. They had four children that they left with family in "Hungary" and Joseph married his widowed cousin and they raised the children together. The chart looked odd to see two people get married with the same last name, but they were not blood relations. My brother has the full family chart, USA and Germany on his wall but I don't have my copy laid out yet. I'm going to give you his email address and he can do a bit more on the details. Let me know if he helps. Sincerely R.E.Klepper Fred's address is : Klepperholt@aol.com

Just read your queries on the Sterhans. My great grandfather was Josef Sterhan, born in Lugos, Hungary in 1853. He came to this country in 1898. Stephanus Sterhan was married to Juliana Shaberle. Josef settled first in Glen Ullin, ND then in Gladstone, ND where he received land through the Homestead Act. I don't know when the family moved to Glendive, MT, but Josef died there in 1913 and is buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. I have done extensive research on the family but did not know of a Franciska Sterhan, other than Josef's first wife, Franciska Mohdut, who died before the family came to America. Would love to know more.

Ronald....I can't make a connection with my Sterhans, although being from the same area/same name, there probably is some distant connection. The names Joseph and Anna are the only ones common to my line. But I'll keep your information in my file and let you know if I find the link. Good luck in your research. JoAnne

Hi,

Some of my ancestors came from Darowa in Austria-Hungary, now Romania. I have two books about the village, and was lucky enough to meet some of my long lost relatives from Darowa in Germany last year I also visited both Darowa and Lugoj last spring. I have a book with pictures of the tombstones of 6 Kleppers buried in Lugosh. The book also shows a Sterhan buried in Darowa.

I realize that two years have passed since your posting, and that you might have discovered more about your family by this time. If you would like the tombstone information, please contact me.
Good luck,
Cathy Teufel

Sorry for the delayed response, Fred, I have been traveling. The only Phillip I have in my database was born in 1848, one of the sons of Christian (b.1802) and Susanah Clepper, my GGGGF via their son James (also b.1848). I suspect that my Christian and your Phillip were related, possibly siblings.

Let me know if you would like to exchange Clepper databases. I would be happy to do so.
