I'm looking for any information on my great, great grandmother Elizabeth Cleveland. I know that she was born 1819 in Ontario Canada. Her fathers name was Joshua and his father was George. She married John Griffus in I believe 1835. They moved to Michigan and settled in Brady twp. were they are buried. I would appreciate any information. Thank you

I'm working on the story of Capt. George Cleveland, a twice-shanghaied Martha’s Vineyard whaler, who in 1900 was abandoned by his employers almost two thousand miles from home to starve alone in the arctic tundra wilderness of Nunavut, Canada:

http://www.oldtimeislands.org/Cleveland/

Know anything about his story? We're trying to gather as much as we can!

C

I have a photo of "Mr. and Mrs. Doug Cleveland" taken in 1946. They are a young, probably newly married couple. The photo was with a bunch of Lockwood and Baker photos, mostly from Allegany County, NY. I am guessing that Mrs. Cleveland's maiden name may have been Lockwood or Baker.

If anyone can help me ID them, it would be great!

Kingsley Cleveland was my great-great grandfather. He was married to Marian Alexander. She must have died in Ohio, and he moved up to Michigan. He had several children: James Silas, Rebecca Ann, Margaret, Lovisa Jane, and Marian Alice. My great-grandmother was Lovisa Jane Cleveland. I have much information, especially for Judy Grow. I attempted to contact Judy per her e-mail address, but it is no longer functional. Does anybody have information regarding Kingsley Cleveland's wife, Marian Alexander? The only thing I have found about her is that she was born in Pennsylvania??????

Seeking info on Elizabeth Cleveland who married John Johnston. They had daughter Mable Johnston in 1889.Mable was my Grandmother. She died in the flu epidemic of 1918 when my father was only 2 weeks old. He was raised by an Uncle and Aunt. Only found out recently his mothers name. My cousin has photo's of Mable with another relative Walter Cleveland who was living with a woman named Florence Canfield. Also pics of Lydia Cleveland who married Ben Gott?? Am hitting a dead end with Elizabeth & John. My father was killed in WWll so I grew up with not much knowledge of his side of the family. Any help will be appreciated. I know the Cleveland and Dike/Dyke lines merge very frequently in the geneology that I have.

I know they had a couple of kids and Willie Watson (Teal) was one of them. Hattie was my grandmothers , grandma and since both are gone along with most of the others we are really interested in the Hattie Cleveland family. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Clevelands of Leicestershire, England

Hi, my earliest known Cleveland ancestor is James Henry Cleveland of Leicester (b. 1814). His father was William (b.1789) who died in Leicester. The Leicestershire Clevelands were book keepers, and also involved in the newspaper business. Some other branches living in Nottinghamshire, and Warwickshire also were involved in hosiery, and tailoring. If anybody has any info on whether my lot are connected to the Clevelands of Hinckley, Leics I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Paul

Prof. J. J. CLEVELAND Biography, b. 1847 MA to NY to MN to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 746.

City of La Crosse

PROF. J. J. CLEVELAND, Principal of the First Ward School of La Crosse; has been in his present position since the spring of 1877. He was born in Boston, Mass., in 1847; son of Henry C. Cleveland, who removed to New York City in 1854, and died there in 1860. Oct. 1, 1861, Mr. Cleveland enlisted in the 10th Conn. V. I., Co. K, and was in the service three years and four months. He was twice wounded during his term of service. The first was only a flesh wound received at the battle of Roanoke Island, Feb. 8, 1863. This was the first battle in which he was engaged. The second was a gun-shot wound in the right shoulder, received Aug. 1, 1864, on the James River in Virginia, which permanently disabled him, and in consequence of which he was discharged in January, 1865. In the fall of 1867, he came West and entered the State Normal School at Mankato, Minn., from which he graduated in June, 1873. He taught three years in Blue Earth City, Minn., and came from there to La Crosse in 1877. He was married in March, 1871, in Blue Earth Co., Minn., to Miss Maggie, daughter of John Shields, of that county. Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland have four children - Lizzie, May, Bertha and Grace.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

MISSING: TWIN GIRLS' MOTHER 1894-95 ARKANSAS
KNOW THAT THE GIRLS NEVER LEFT THE LOGAN-YELL COUNTY AREAS--ACCORDING TO JAMES' OBIT, MAGGIE MARRIED A HOOD, AND LIZZIE MARRIED MAX CLEVELAND...IN 1943 BOTH LIVED IN MAGAZINE, ARKANSAS. Since James remarried so soon after the girls were born, and his NEW inlaws raised the girls, have idea that she died in childbirth or shortly thereafter.

Desperate to find marriage, obit or death records--anything-- to locate the mother of twin girls Maggie and Lizzie Mitchell born in April 1894. James re-married in 1896. Know girls were living and raised in Logan County and were with their father James Riley Mitchell's in-laws in 1900 census listed as cousins to their children---that would be William Dee and Sarah Ritchie, who were parents to James's second wife Rosy. Living in PETIT JEAN at that time, James's family nearby, and his children by Rosy all born in SUGAR GROVE. Can anyone with contacts in Logan co. please search for me? I live on west coast and can not travel at this time. Many thanks.
rmurph@caltel.com

Grover Cleveland's illegitimate son, b. 1874

Anyone ever try to learn the fate of President Grover Cleveland's illegitimate son Oscar Folsom CLEVELAND, born in 1874 to Maria Halpin in Buffalo? While it was never proven that Grover was the father, he did take financial responsibility for the child, who was supposedly adopted by a "New York family."

It is possible that Cleveland's law partner and eventual father-in-law, Oscar FOLSOM, was the actual father.

One rumor is that the son's new parents renamed him James E. King and he became a prominent Buffalo gynecologist who died in the 1940s. The age is right.

Any other theories?
Orgin of Cleveland Family

Thorkil De Cliveland , the earliest Cleveland of record , had his seat , evidently in or prior to 1066 at Gisborough , Cleveland , County of York England and here in late life he assumed his surname which many have since borne.
His first name ,Thorkil indicates that he was of Anglo-Saxon ancestry and not of Norman descent , though both these and Danes were of the same origin.
The English ancestry of the Cleveland emigrants to America is not yet definitely settled . The Parish Records of St. Nicholas Church , Ipswich , England (printed 1897) show baptisms , burials and marriages , 1542 to 1612 of ancient Ispwich , England , Clevelands , all whom were unmistakably kin to Moses Cleveland of Woburn, Mass and wore the same Christian names as Moses and his immediate descents , via Moyses , Samuel , Isaac , John , Ambrose and William, the last named being the earliest Ipswich Cleveland of record , born about 1520.
I would be glad to share any information I have.

My earliest Cleveland Ancestor is Richard, b. abt. 1555, from St Mary at Elms, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Would love any additions anyone would share. I will send all I have. Meejain@aol.com
