The person that told you that you should start with the members of your family that you know (including yourself) and work backwards is absolutely right. Yes, there could have been a distant cousin that came over at a later date but it will still go back and connect to John Clevenger and Mary Mnu (at least at some point). He is not right that I gave you dangerous advice. This is geneology not live fire exercise. Yes, you could be a Klavanger from Brussells or where ever or you could be Swahili. The thing is that you have to start somewhere. You need encouragement not embeded fear. Just start with you, and your parents and grandparents. Try www.ancestry.com (a free trial is being offered). You'll be surprised at how soon you get a little green leaf pop up.

Good Luck
A Clevenger (from John and Mary)

The only way to find out from whom you descend is to work backward from yourself. It would be dangerous to assume you descend from John and Mary. There is no proof that a third-cousin of John did not also immigrate, maybe bunches of members of the family who do not descend from John. Also, given the way names have been mangled and adapted and tweaked in this country in the past 300 years, you may find you descend from the Klavengers of Bavaria. Have fun.

Sarah

Your name is a common name in the Clevenger (Clevinger) line. I don't know where the person found their information that "all Clevengers were not related even distantly" but they are sadly misinformed. The clevenger line goes back to England. The name originated from "Clavinger" which had the status meaning of "keeper of the keys of a great household". Latin...Clavigerus from Clavis meaning key. The whole clan started with John and Mary Clevenger who migrated from England with their samll son George. They settled in Yonkers, New York. From there they had other children and the family spread all over the United States. The family has been in this country for over 300 years. There are many books about the Clevengers. You're from a very large and proud line of people. Seek out those that came before you and get to know them. Good Luck Jennifer

Mary Clevenger, about 1870, Indiana

Seeking info about Mary Clevenger, born about 1870 in Indiana who is listed as the mother of Leora Gable Harris Paquette. And we assume would also be the mother to her sister, Lena Gable.....father is listed as Harvey Gable. Interestingly....and we don't know if there is any connection....Leora's first husband was Ralph Harris. His half-brother, Henry Harris was born to a Vonnie or Dolly Talent but raised by his maternal grandparents..Harvey and Cora Gable. Henry's mother's sister is listed in the census as Rena. Are Lena and Rena related...or perhaps the same person?

I'm trying to locate any information possible in regards to Sanford Runice Clevenger. He was born in 1921 and died in 1973 in Kansas City, MO. I know that his father was Jerry Ervin Clevenger and his mother was Myrtle Alvilda Lillethun. He may or may not have married Betty Puckett, but they had one child together named James. Sanford would've been my wife's grandfather. We don't have much information about this side of the family so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Deb,

No, these are not the children of my James Bruce Clevenger and Eliza Jane Murphy. Their children were Claude (who later changed his name to John C. Murphy), Beryl, Hazel and Paul. I hope your doing well on your family search, we have run in to so many brick walls, we've sort of stalled out. Still searching for William and Adaline Murphy (Graves), Eliza Jane's parents. James Bruce's parents were Lorenzo Dow Clevenger and Elizabeth Courtney, Lorenzo's parents were Bazzel Clevenger and Margaret Wolf. We still cannot find Lorenzo's grave after all these years. Seems like the rest of the family are in Liberty Chapel, but no sign or Lorenzo.

Patti

Patti

I may be able to help a little, my family has decent records going back to 1830's as I recall. From what i have read there are an awful lot of clevengers and they are from all over. My family is from the south (I think) due to a lot of Cherokee Indian in the family but also possibly oklahoma.

Abraham Clevenger, who married Emma Best c. 1847, was killed in 1896 on his farm. His team ran away with a load of wood; the boom pole broke, hit him in the head, and knocked him off a bridge that passed over a runway between two fields. There were hogs in there and "Aunt Emma" had to fight the hogs off his body with a pitch fork for three hours until the kids got home from school and got help. (According to a relative, Raymond A. Clevenger in 1951.

I believe that I may be the great-granddaugher of Addis Clevenger referenced in this thread. And, my dad was born in Sandy Hook, KY--not THAT big of a place. Does anyone know about the family tree before his parents, William Clevenger and Sabina A. Greenwood? I'd love to go further back.

PS: Ad Clevenger married Stella Fraley. They had 13 children. He also had 5 children from a previous marriage but was widowed.

Looking for Bible & records for William Clevenger line

I am wondering if anyone knows of a Bible or other records for the William Clevenger who married Mary Huff?

What resources did Griffin use in his book to prove this line?

I need copies of the actual source to submit for a DAR application. Griffin book & census will not be enough.

I appreciate any help in this matter.
