My ggmother was a Henrietta Allen nee Cliff. I found her in the 1881 and earlier censuses. She married a George Allen and lived in Kingston, Surrey. She had a brother, Richard Cliff, dob 1848, that lived with her and her family. She was born in Lancaster, Manchester in the 1830's. Perhaps this could be of some help to you. I think I have her parents' names somewhere. I think her mother was also a Henrietta.
Please let me know if this fits in with your research.
Thanks, Gail

My Cliff's came to the US in 1846 and supposedly went to Michigan first. Then Thomas Cliff and Sarah Audlin ended up in Oswego, NY in 1847. I have always wondered why did they go to Michigan first. Their oldest son stayed in that area or was there originally. Thomas Audlin Cliff was there oldest son. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you

Kevin Roy
Oneida, NY

I am looking for relatives of John Stewart Cliff. He was a sailor during WWII and listed his hometown as Wichita. He was aboard the sub, the USS GRUNION when she went missing in July 1942 while on its maiden voyage in the Aluetians. The families were not notified for about 2 months.

They were declared dead Aug 2, 1943. 70 Men died on this submarine and until recently nothing was known concerning their fate.

Now a search in underway, being conducted by the son's of Commander Mannert. I joined this search to find relatives of the dead sailors so we could share this exciting news. Any tips of leads will be greatly appreciated......

Sharon,

I have Cliff's in my family tree and they lived in the "Thumb" area of Michigan (Cass City) - about an hour away. My grandmother was Irma Cliff and she had four other sisters. My Great Grandfather was Richard Cliff. I have not spent any time on the Cliff genealogy tree, but I do have an obituary for him. I can get information off of that to you. But, I do believe that, along with some pictures my grandmother left me, is all of the Cliff information I have. But, could be a start for you, especially with the Michigan connection you are looking for.

Rob

I have Cliff ancesters that came from Russia. Rebecca b 1875, Debra b1860, Moses b1863 & possibly a Morris. Their father is Zaida Beinish Cliffe, I don't have his wife's name and I don't think they came to England.

Rebecca married Reuben Loder in 1896 in Mile End London.

Debra married Colman Hyman in Russia, I think as their first few children were born in Russia, David, Harris, Myer (aka Simon) the rest were born in London, Ada, Alec, Charles.

Moses (aka Klaff) married Maria ? - they lived in Sheffield in 1901 census, had Annie b 1898, Isaac b 1894, Jennie b 1900, Samuel b1896.

I'm not sure if you have town in England correct. I believe it was Gedney. Anyway Thomas Cliff-Sarah Audlin Cliff were my 3G Grandparents. I am descended via Thomas Audlin Cliff then Henry Lees Cliff then Mabel Lucille Cliff Clifton then Phlyllis Eldore Clifton Rewey to me.

Henry Audlin Cliff spent much of his adult life in Wisconsin as a minister. He died in Iowa.

I am currently researching the Scholes side of my family. My grandfather was James William Gorse and his parents were Joseph & Eliza Anne, Anna or possibly Hannah Gorse (nee Scholes) of Three lane Ends, Lower end Tottington. Eliza's father was William Scholes(farmer) and i think he married a Elizabeth Holmes in 1849 in Bury Lancs and in the census of 1871 they live with their children at Lower end Tottington. I'm not sure yet but I think Williams parents could be Lomax &Ann Scholes but I have no maiden name for Ann. Maybe they are related to your Scholes's?
Sharon

THE FREEPORT PRESS

Pub. Aug. 2, 1923
Harrison Co., OH

THOMAS C. CLIFF, age 23, a B&O yard switchman, was seriously injured Friday morning when he boarded a loaded coal car preparing to ride it across the scales and into its proper track in the yards below.

It is reported that the train made an advance in speed thus jerking the car, as he was climbng the ladder on the side, causing him to lose his hold, throwing him to the ground.

His fall was broken by colliding with his conductor, C. B. Louk, who was engaged in cutting cars over the hump.

Medical attention was summoned, revealing injury to the head, back and wrist.

He was taken on No. 69 to Bridgeport then to Martins Ferry Hospital by ambulance.

Mr. Cliff's home is in Monterey, Tennessee, where he will probably return after leaving the hospital.

**************

Courtesy post - not related

Children were Ann b. 1903, Helen, Burton Jr. and Elizabeth. Burton Francis Cliff worked as a moulder at the J.P. Bushauer Foundry in Newark.
Cliff, Coon, Warfield families

Searching for information on John W. Cliff born about 1830 New York. Had brothers Horatio T. Cliff born 1832 New York and Thomas H. Cliff born about 1835 New York.

John W. Cliff is listed in the 1860 census in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. He married Mary A. Coon. In 1870 and 1880 census John is in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan as is his brother Horatio. Brother Thomas H. Cliff is listed in the Rocherster City Directory as a physician with office at 82 State Street. Horatio and John were both in the printing business.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. John disappears from the census records after 1880. Don't know if he died there or moved. With no 1890 census it is always difficult to locate people unless they were Civil War Pensioners.
