Scott I have you in my tree already!
your line of Byers starts with William Isaiash Byers born in 1824 Ireland married to a Mary E. Wilson. I have a little bit of info on this line and I'm also related to the Wilson's from Ireland too! Maybe there's a connection there also?
Let me know okay!
Ann

I did send an email replying to you, but I thought since it's been 6 years since your post, your email address may have changed. :o) I am one of Clarence C Clift's great-granddaughters. He had 2 children with his first wife Mary (maiden name unknown to me), Mary Louise & Louis or Lewis. I think Uncle Lewis had kids, but not sure.

I am the only child of Randall Anson, who is one of Clarence's grandsons. Randall is one of Mary Louise's 4 sons. She passed in 1996 or 1997, in Springfield, MO.

Where did the elder Clarence die in 1933? Was it in prison/jail? How did he pass? How did Mary Alice Robinson pass in 1904?

JAMES DeVANE SMITH FAMILY

I am researching the family of my great grandfather, JAMES DeVANE SMITH. Specifically, I am seeking information regarding ELIZABETH ELLIS, his mother. She was b. about 1833 in Lincoln Co., TN. She married a man named SMITH in Lincoln Co., TN about 1850. They had a son named JAMES DeVANE SMITH b. 16 Aug 1853 in Lincoln Co., TN and d. 15 Jul 1910 in Fairview, Grayson Co.,TX. ELIZABETH ELLIS is named as his mother on his death certificate. In his obituary, it says that” he came to Texas with his mother when a boy”.

I have found an ELIZABETH ELLIS who married STEPHEN CLIFT SMITH 24 Oct 1849, in Lincoln Co., TN according to the Tennessee State Marriage Index. This family traveled to Ellis Co., TX abt 1856 with Stephen’s parents, LEE SMITH and ELIZABETH CLIFT SMITH. Elizabeth Clift Smith d. there about 1857. Lee Smith d. there in Mar of 1860 according to the Ellis Co. Mortality Schedule of 1860. I found information that STEPHEN CLIFT SMITH d. in Ellis Co., TX in 1863. I also have found information that ELIZABETH ELLIS SMITH returned to Lincoln Co., TN by 1867. I found information that she married EZEKIEL NORRIS CRAWFORD 17 Dec 1867, in Lincoln Co., TN. They can be found in 1880 and 1900 US census. By 1900, they had moved from Lincoln Co. TN to Green Hazel, Madison Co., AL. EZEKIEL NORRIS CRAWFORD d. in Green Hazel, Madison Co., AL in 1906 and is buried in Concord Cemetery there. Elizabeth d. there in 1908 and is also buried in Concord Cemetery.

I have a picture of ELIZABETH ELLIS taken in Denison, Grayson Co., TX. She appears to be abt 35-40 years old in the picture. I know that JAMES DeVANE SMITH lived in Grayson Co., TX from about 1882 until his death in 1910.

Any information regarding this family and these individuals would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I'm Allen Clift. Most of my father's line came from Virginia also. My 3G Grandfather, Thornton Clift was born in 1794 in Caroline City, , Virginia. He married Jemima Booton 1802-1884 on 13 Oct 1841 in Madison, , Virginia. His Father was William Clift, b & d dates and locations unknown. I have no information on Williams Spouse. Looking at Thorntons birth year, it seems possible we have a match with William. I think the court record you have for young William Clift would exclude this match and it would make William over 75 at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. I Dont know if this helps you or not, but I thought it would be worth a try.

My Mary Francis was born in 1853 and my research has found her second husband to be Langhorne M. Tabb. They moved to Illinois, raised a daughter named Aloise who married a man named Oscar Huber Hostetter. Mary Francis (Fanny) and Langhorne lived out their senior years in Pennsylvania with Aloise and her husband. Mary Francis was buried in Maysville, KY beside her mother and father, Alfred and Louisa Clift.

This family is on 1870 Scott Co., AR (Waldron) census, but I can't find them on any other census. Does anyone know what happened to them? Here's what I found on the 1870:
CLIFF, James 42 AL
Thursa B. 30 TN
Howard 12 TX (Howell C.)
Fanny 10 AR
Jefferson T. 8 AR
Adolphus K. 6 AR
Loretta J. 3 AR
Lewis N. 9/12 AR
Another contributor says this is the J.T. Clift who enlisted 18 Jul 1861 at Benton, AR in the 11th Ark Inf, Co D. He was captured 8 Apr 1862 at Island 10, MO & sent to military prison at Camp Chase, OH then transferred to Johnson's Island 24 Apr 1862 then to Vicksburg for exchange 1 Sep 1862. He is said to have died soon after the war as a result of his imprisonment. What happened to his wife and children???

Hi I appreciate it's been a while since you posted this query, but I've just got on this site.

I belong to the Barnstaple branch of the Clift family, my great grandad Walter was however born in Brixham. But beyond him we don't know much about the family except names and dates - I've connected them from Brixham to Plymouth back to Marhamchurch but I'd love to know if there are any Clifts still in Devon related to Walter's brothers Benjamin, John, Samuel, Henry or Charles.

One person my mum had heard of was a Helena Ann Clift, she lived right up to 1971, aged 94, and was the wife of Samuel I think. Although one tree on this website has him down as marrying a Maud Molloy, I think that could be erroneous.
Dear Daniel - I am so delighted that you have got in touch - I think from what you have told me so far - I believe I am your third cousin and the second cousin of one of your parents. Are you descended from Florence Berry - Walter's second wife ? To answer some of your questions - I am aware of Helena (nee Wyatt) - she was Sam Clifts first wife - I have photos of their son George Clift. Helena and Sam parted - the story was that she left him and in those days it was impssible to divorce - so some years later Samuel took a common law wife Annie Maud Molloy who was the mother of 10 of Sam's children. The later born children were actually given the surname Clift. My mother was Florence Clift born 1925 and she did mention Walter to us. She knew he had left Brixham to become a tailor in Barnstaple. She said that one day when she was a little girl there was a knock on their front door and two very smart men stood on the doorstep and one was Walter. That's all we ever knew but by tracing the family tree I was able to find out a bit more. Someone sent me the text from the Barnstaple Athaneum relating to the death of Walter's first wife and first child and then later I believe Walter also lost his second wife Florence ? There are loads of Clift descendants - I have so much to tell you. I also have a photo of Helena, also one of Sam and his brother John William Clift. Also Water was named Walter Bant Clift - I wonder why ? Please get in touch - Here is my real email address you will need to alter it a little !
zyg1010 at care4free dot net

Samuel CLIFT

Hi All,
I am reporting my query (after several years) as I have changed my email address. You will see posts under aquila37@bigpond.com and even some under aenone@vision.net.au. BUT now the correct address is aquila72@bigpond.com.
My interest is Samuel Clift, born c1793/93, father William, and he said he came from Oldbury (Warwick,Worcester,Shrop, Stafford?) when he was convicted at the Northampton Assizes in 1818 and sent to the Colony. He later settled in the Maitland (NSW) and Liverpool Plains (Breeza)NSW areas and had a large family.
I have a lot of info re his life and times in Australia but am anxious to trace his origins in England, if anyone can help. Thanks,
AEnone.
