One of my paternal gggrandfathers was Joseph Serginson, a shoemaker born in Nunburnholme, Yorkshire about 1814 and died in Pocklington, Yorkshire in 1889. He married Mary West (1809 - 1886) in 1835, and they had several children, including my ggrandmother, Jane Serginson, born in 1835 or 1836 in Nunburnholme and died in 1903 in Pocklington. She married Henry Read in 1855 and had several children, including my grandfather, Joseph Serginson Read in 1858. He died in Wigan in 1929. My father, Allen Serginson Read, was born in Wigan in 1916 to Joseph and his much younger second wife, Ada Riddlesworth. He lived his last 44 years in Montreal, Canada and died while visiting us in Winnipeg in 1992.

I have no knowledge of any Serginson relatives, but I'm sure there sre some out there.

John Read

I am not sure what my connection is to the Clinchs of Dublin, but my grandfathers brothers obituary mentions P. Clinch & B. Clinch. Judging by the 1911 census, im presuming this is Phyllis the scientist and her sister Bernadette. My grandfathers brother was studying to be a chemist so maybe they went to college together. Is there any registers available for this?

Hi Chris
I started looking at the Clinch page because I discovered recently that my Husband appears to have Clinch's in his family. However I think his are Wexford Clinch's but the name is unusual.
Anyways there is a website called www.rootsireland.ie If you register on it you can search for free on it. They have improved the site recently as it now allows you to search using the combination of father/mother and husband/bride. There is a Luke Dempsey baptised in Dublin North in a place called Skerries (nice area) in 1860 with the parents you are looking for. There is also a marriage there in 1858 of the same couple. There is also an Alicia Clinch baptised in Blanchardstown in 1832. It costs €5 to view a record.
There is another site called www.irishgenealogy.ie. This site is free and slowly but surely all of the church records are being added to it. Even though the site says that they have Dublin RC records I think that they are referring to the inner city and back in the 1850's Blanchardstown would have been in the country and not the city like it is now.
You can e-mail me at bredanolan@eircom.net if you need any help

Breda

Descendents of James Dempsey and Alicia Clynch

My gggrandfather was Luke Dempsey, born 17 Mar 1858 in Ireland and died 21 Feb 1917 in California; his parents were James Dempsey and Alicia Clynch. He married my gggrandmother in Cincinnati in 1886.

Looking up his parents names at familysearch.org, I found several people who have parents named James Demps(e)y and Alicia/Alice Clinch/Klinch, mostly from Dublin:

Christina born 15 Sep 1861, Dublin
William born 03 Mar 1865, Holmpatrick, Dublin
John born 24 Jun 1867, Holmpatrick, Dublin
Mary Ann born 08 Sep 1869, Dublin
Mary Alice born 03 Jul 1874, Dublin (also my great grandmother's name; she was born 1888)
Joseph born 17 Sep 1876, Dublin
Katie born 16 Dec 1881 in Irish Free State.

The only one of those I've found more on is Katie; she married Samuel Tate McGimsey on 21 Apr 1909 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Samuel's parents were Andrew McGimsey and Susan McGimsey. Katie was born 16 Dec 1881 in Ireland and died 18 Jan 1968 in Cincinnati; Samuel was born 27 Jul 1883 in North Carolina and died 21 Mar 1945 in Cincinnati. They had at least 2 children, Andrew M and Catherine.

Katie and Samuel are buried at St. Joseph New Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio, as is their son Andrew who was married to Marjorie A. Stern.

I don't know if any of the other people I've listed came to the US; there's a John Dempsey who married an Ellen O'Brien in Cincinnati, but while they have the same birthmonth, the years are off.

I'm hoping to find other descendents of Dempsey/Clinch from Dublin to compare notes.

George CLINCH b. 1847 Hoxton - Married Elizabeth Woolnough 1873

Hi, I saw your message by accident as I was trawling through the internet. My father was a Clinch and so am I and my brother. My dad was born in Hackney, east London and I noticed one of your ancestors was George, who married an Elizabeth. I cannot remember my dad's dad's name - he died when my dad was only 2. But, my grandmother's name was Eliza, or Liz, as she was sometimes known. My dad was born in 1924, so probably not the same couple, but may have been related. Just a thought. Not too many Clinches around in the east London area.

I am trying to find info on Thomas Clinchy (b. abt 1815) and wife, Jane Armstrong (b. abt 1815). I think they came from County Longford. They arrived in USA in 1847 and settled in Perth Amboy, NJ. (They were likely married in Ireland.) From their death certificates: Thomas Clinchy's parents were Thomas and Ann (nee?). Jane Armstrong's parents were Robert and Jane (nee?) I know both families were not Catholic but definately Protestant. Looking for any clues to locate records in County Longford. Thank You.

I am a military medal dealer in Dublin,Ireland, and was researching a John Clinch online and came across your posting. I have a 9 carat gold breast badge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes awarded to a John Clinch of Dublin in 1939. It is currently for sale on my website www.military-medals-online.com. I suspect that it may have been awarded to your grandfather and so might be of interest to you, but unfortunately, I have been unable to find out any information about John Clinch. Contact me via the website if you would like me to send you a photograph of the badge.

Hi Craig, looking back on the CLINCH family thread, I noticed a few errors in your reply to Kylie some time back.
Henry W. CLINCH is my GGGrandfather. His parents were John CLINCH and Frances LLOYD (married 7 October 1809); HIS parents were John CLINCH and Frances LINDELL - you have some of their children mixed up. Also, you have the parents of the John who married Frances LINDELL 1787, as Issac CLINCH and Sophia Mary COTCHETT who married 1775! Unless they married years after John was born, this is incorrect
Kind regards, Wendy

Do you have this info?
What tree proram do you use. I can gedcom my tree if you like. Have notes etc. Kind Regards, Wendy (KNIGHT)

For your information, the correct entry for Rose Marie (or Maria) Clinch is:

Birth: 1849 St Bartholomews, Bethnal Green, London

Marriage: Parish Church, Stoke Newington, Middx, November 19 1876 to Arthur Bywater

Residence (last known): 10 Brunswick Place, Hove, Sussex

(Many of the entries in parish registers are hard to read or almost illegible, you have to have some practice at doing that, but I have scrutinized the original (on microfilm) very carefully).

Clench Family in America in 18th century

I have traced my ancestry back to the Beverly Plantation in Essex Co. Virginia (USA) where I find three individuals with surname Clench. In 1721 two servant children, a Jacob Clench and a Mary Clench, were in court to judge their age. Jacob was judged to be 5 and Mary was judged to be 7. In 1729 from the a a servant Barbary Clench from the Beverly Plantation was named in court records relative to possible marriage. Although the latter court record was in Spotsylvainia Co, Virginia, it is probably the same plantation since the Spotsylvania was formed in 1721, in part from Essex.

Any information you might have that might pertain to these or other Clenches in America in this time frame would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Well if it's the same W Clinch, by 1911 he was living with his parents again.

However, I've since found another W Clinch in the 1901 census who is also in my own family tree. He was also an Ealing man. Born 1880, was working as a labourer and boading on Green Dragon Lane, which is quite literally just across Gunnersbury Park from Popes Lane (a few hundred yards).

Do you have any more specific information about Mary. Birth date etc. Was Hughes her married or maiden name? Anything at all regarding these people and their relationship would be helpful for further searching.

I could not find any relevant Hughes/Clinch marriages in the databse, though a William J Clinch did marry a Bessant in 1911 in Brentford.

Regards

Craig Carey-Clinch

A curious one.

The only W Clinch in the area in the 1901 census was William James, who was 16 at the time. His father was from Aston in Oxfordshire and the family lived on Ecclestone Rd, about half a mile from Popes Lane.

the 1911 Census shows William still with his parents, but at Gordon rd, West Ealing. He was a cab driver and single.

What is your interest in W Clinch and where did you get the reference?
Re: CLINCH Family

Hi,

I took a look at your query and offer the following for further research. ALL NEEDS CHECKING

Henry William was born or Christened on 2-7-1812. His parents were John Clinch and Frances Lindell, who married 11-3-1787 in Finsbury, London.

Henry had siblings:
Sarah, b or C 16-7-1787 Finsbury
John " 17-7-1789 Finsbury
Charles Joshua " 27-12-1817 "
Mary " 21-7-1795 "
John Edward " 8-11-1810 "
Daniel Lindell " 24-5-1793 "
Thomas " 7-8-1790 "

John was born in 1762 in Finsbury. His parents were Issac and Sophia Mary Cotchett. They married 25-4-1775 in Finsbury.

John had a sister, Elizabeth, born Finsbury in 1775

Issac was probably the one who was born 18-10-1749 in Sunbury On Thames. He was the son of Issac Clench and Mary.

He had a sister, Jane Clench who was born on 28-5-1721 in Walton on Thames (long gap between them, so probably unrecorded siblings? Either that, or there were two Issac and mary couples)

There is no record of the marriage, or birth of Issac 1749 (checking PRs locally may turn up something), but a look at my Clinch database reveals that the name was used a few times by the Suffolk Clench family, so there is a possibility that you may have Suffolk ancestry. This branch of the family had a few luminaries, including Judge John Clench, reputed to be a favourite of Elizabeth I.

But beware! The Dorset Clenchs used the name Issac at least once and at least one branch of this very large family came to London.

I'm not an ancestral researcher touting for business. I put the above together using the large Clinch database that I maintain as part of an ongoing 'one name' research project that I do in my spare time.

You do need to check all this, but at least you now have something to work from. I recommend ordering birth certificates etc to verify all this before adding it to your tree, or taking it to be fact (too many unverified trees out there).

I'm a direct descendant of one of the Oxfordshire branches of the family (if you were wondering). Strangely enough, I currently live in Beckenham.

There were other Beckenham Clinchs in the 19th C, but descended from the rural Kent branch of the family.

I hope the above helps your research. The Clinchs have an interesting history and you may unearth some fascinating info.

Regards and good luck!

Craig Carey-Clinch
Beckenham, Kent, Great Britain
