My great-grandfather was James Robert Clipper, born in Georgianna, Alabama. He later moved to Boley, Oklahoma and was one of the early settlers in 1903. I believe that Mitchell Clipper was also known as Duncan and also moved to Oklahoma, Morse township. My branck of the Clipper family later moved to Vado, New Mexico and to California in the mid-to-late 1930s.

My grandmoter was Ora Lee Clipper born in Boley, 1916 and she died in Los Angeles, 1990. Her oldest brother was James Cherry who was the grand-father of jazz musician Don Cherry who passed in 1995.

Mary died 15 February 1935 in Kansas City, Kansas.

Mary's parents are Adam and Mary (Burdick) Clipper. Their children are: George b. 1848; William b. 1857; Caroline b. 1844; and Mary.

Adam Clipper was born 1814 in Cassell, Hesse, Germany.

What I have learned so far about Mary Burdick is she was born in Rhode Island.

I hope I have been of help. If you have a scanner, I would appreciate copies of any newspaper clippings you have if you would like to send them to me. I am just beginning to scan my research so that I can share it with others.

Dear Joanne,
I had to laugh at your remark of the men being womanizers. Certainly, some of my uncles and brotheres were that. While most of the family I know resided in the St.Louis,MO area , I seem to recall my mom saying something about relatives in NY. She also said our name was Anglisized when our ancestors emigrated to the USA. We are caucasian race.

Now onto replying to your request about my families ancestry.
Two of my neices, Barb Robinson, e-mail > BarbRobin@aol.com <
and Raylene Menke, e-mail > rjhall2000@msn.com < can answer more of your request than I. Should you decide to write to them , be patient for the reply. Also, since they are hesitant to open strange e-mail , include my name somehow in the Subject line ( example : Frank Clipper told me to write to you ).

If you would like to do it , you can e-mail me
> clprkazoo@aol.com <

Clipper's from St. Louis

My dad and I ran across this site tonight
for the first time, and we found it very
interesting. Just in case anyone out there
is doing research on the Clipper's in the
St. Louis, Missouri area, here's some of my
background.

Matthew Joseph Clipper (self, b. 1975)
Joseph Otto Clipper Jr. (father, b. 1950)
Joseph Otto Clipper Sr. (grandfather, b. 1923, d. 1983)
Otto Clipper (great-grandfather, b. 1896, d. 1986)

That's as far as I know going back. If
anyone out there is directly related to me,
send me an email message. Oh yeah, in case
you're wondering, my family is white (I've
noticed there are both black and white
Clipper's out there).

My Great-Grandfather is James M. Clipper, however my Grandfather is William Klipper, so the spelling was changes somewhere along the line. I found James Clipper on the 1880 Census in Jefferson County, MO. This line of Klipper's were from Germany. My mother's family were born and raised in Southeast MO.

clipper family

I have had quite a bit of luck finding persons with
the last name "clipper". Most are in the East---
D.C., New York, Pennsylvania, with some still living
in the Virginia, West Virginia regions. For the most
part, I have concentrated on the Klippers who owned
a plantation in Hanover County, Virginia during slavery.
They were German, came to the U.S. and worked a
tobacco plantation. They owned a few hundred slaves
among them my great-great-grandmother. The plantation
owner and she, whether consentually or not, had relations
that resulted in the birth of my great-grandfather. As an
adult he was freed and moved to the D.C. area where he and his
wife had nine children.

I have tried to trace the white side of the family and have been
unsuccessful in receiving responses. My understanding is that
they are fairly wealthy and on my "black side" of the family there
is that the Klippers may feel that I want more than just acknowledgment
of family ties. Many have Anglicized their names and still live the "ole
Virginia" way which is alright. I am only looking for my great-grandfathers
slave record and the paper indicating he was manumuted, should they still exist.

I wish you luck in your search and should I come across anything relative to the
MO area, I will let you know.

You asked if my family originated in Virginia/Washinton,D.C. area and the answer is 'Not that I know of". My grandparents all came to the U.S. from Germany before my parents were born, but I don't know in which year.I believe my surname was originally spelled "Klipper"and Anglishized(sic)when they arrived in the U.S.
My dad was born in 1889 or 1890 and my mom in 1899, both in St.Louis,MO.
I have not had much luck in finding anything under either name, other than some possible relatives around the St.Louis,MO area.

My father was Clarence Henry Clipper. He was born in
West Virginia (Fairfax County). Oral history indicates
that his family (his grandfather) began on a Klippert or
Kleiper family plantation in Hanover County Virginia. When
slaves were freed, my great grandfather, his wife and 10 children
moved to Washington D.C. where most still live. My father is
the son of Henry Clipper. My father's mother was Louise Goodlow.
As both my grandparents were either biracial or one-quarter white,
I am trying desperately to find both sides of the family. My father
died when I was three and I want to know more about him, his families and
where he came from. If you are either side of the family, Black or White, please
write back. Thank you.

I found my grandfather on the 1920 census. He emigrated from Yugoslavia in 1889. His wife emigrated from Serbia in 1911. This was his second wife. They were living in Ontario, PA, Washington County, Cokeburgh Township, Enumeration District 163. The name was spelled Klippa on the census. My father believes it was changed to Clipper around 1928 when they moved to Mather, PA. I have not found any records from the 1910 census. My grandfather was a trackman for the mines. Good luck in your search.

Matthew, I have information relating to a "Joseph Clipper" (born in TN according to the census records around 1836; his father was born in TN; mother's birth state was unknown). He married Adelina Thompson (born in AL; her father was born in GA; her mother was born in SC). They had 3 children: Laura Virginia Rebecca Clipper (Born 1870); Moses Clipper (Born 1873); Joseph Clipper (Born 1878). Laura Clipper was my Great-Grandmother and was full blooded Native American. Laura married George Johnson and they had children with the following names: George W.J.; William W.; Randolph A., Dorah Adline S.; Danil W.; Lottie Almer A.; Susie Victory; Maudry F.J. If any of these names ring a bell, please let me know. With Joseph running in your family, there might be a connection. Thanks, Barbara Davis

I was reading your info. There is a direct and often mentioned name of OTTO CLIPPER during our family tree discussions.

My family is black, however, our name came from a union between and Otto Clipper and a Mandy (then a slave with no last name). Whether the union was consentual or not is never discussed, but the last name came into our family that way through the resulting children.

Does this sound at all familiar to you?

Please let me know. We could be related.

My father was Clarence Henry Clipper, born in 1921 in Braddock PA to Henry Clipper born sometime in the late 1890s and Louise Goodlow. My father died in 1972 of cancer. I have been researching his ancestry since then. He has half-sisters born to another father so have no information to share with me regarding the Clippers. I understand though that our family originated in Virginia and migrated to D.C. then to other states like PA and NY.
