I am trying to find verified genealogical data for Caroline Margaret Lugard Clive. Miss Clive was reported to be a daughter of Henry Somerset Clive and Ellen "Lizzie" Lugard, and a descendant of Theophilus Clive, a cousin of "Clive of India". Caroline married Col. Colin Philip Greig in 1898 in St. Malo, Brittany France, and had a son, Colin Glennie Greig, born 20 January 1900. The Greigs divorced in 1911. Colin Glennie Greig was better known as film actor Colin Clive, who died in Hollywood in 1937. This part of the line died with him.

Hello Pete, I am in the process of gathering information about the Clive's in German Flatts, NY. I probably dont have much more than you might have. Most of it I have found on the internet and from geneology searches. I plan on making a trip to that area soon to get some photos of the cemetery markers and homes of Henry and Stephen. I have gotten a death certificate for my grandmother, who was Bessie Mae Clive Holden. She was the only child of George L. and Minnie Clive. George was one of the son's of Henry and Emma Clive. Contact me at your convienience. My email address is supermomrr@aol.com

Thank you, Robin

Greetings from across the pond!

I have seen that quite a few people have connected my ancestor Mezey Clive b.1805 in Staffordshire backwards to George Clive and Lydia Harper.
I did at one time include them as parents of Mezey but became uneasy about it when I could find no evidence to back it up.
It seems that most people were doing the same and just copying the error from one tree to another!
It turned out to be a good call because when I decided to head off to Staffordshire to research actual records I found that my Clive line originated in Worcestershire, and so far I have found no connection to the gunmaker Clives at all.

I'm going to try to send you an invite to see my tree, but if it fails just drop me an email address and I'll do it that way.
The Clives in my general line who went to America were some of the children of William Clive b.1852 in Wolverhampton.

If you know of any connections I love to hear about them....

Regards,
Les Clive

Hey "whit roses" -

As far as I know, Henry Clive's connection to Lord Clive of India is tenuous. He claimed it but so far it's not been proven in genealogy circles. There may be a collateral connection through marriage but no direct connection that I've been able to find. I remain open to the possibility and would love to hear from anyone who can furnish some proof.

Hey Robin - Would love a copy of the poem. Although Henry was his given name, the family may have called him Harry. It wasn't unusual to do that (and you have given me a new piece of information). In fact, it wasn't unusual to use a totally unrelated name or a christening name in place of a given name. I can trace your Henry back to 1750 - ancestry George Clive and Lidia/Lydia Harper. He comes from a very well-known family of gun makers in the Sutton Coldfield/Aston/Birmingham area. BTW - Henry and Emma are interred in the Armory Cemetery in Ilion, Herkimer County, NY as are a couple of their children. Henry predeceased Emma. I have a copy of her Last Will and Testament as well as the Petition for probate. At the time of her death (June 13, 1915) she is shown as having real estate worth $3,400. and a personal estate worth $1,300. Contact me offlist (spiritcalls at hotmail.com) with your e-mail address and I'll send you the lineage from 1750 down to Henry, Emma and their Children. I have limited information on their grandchildren and suspect you can fill me in on what I'm missing. Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Sharron

Well, I have a family poem that was obviously hand written and passed down. There is not an author or date, but the names stated are Harry Clive and Emma Wall, and the marriage took place, same as your information. Feb. 27, 1861 at St. Phillips. I suppose there could have been a mistake in the name Harry/Henry. It also states they spent time in Bridgeport, Conn. and then settled in Ilion, NY where Harry worked for Remington as a gunmaker. I would be happy to send you a copy of the poem, to learn more of the information you have.

Thank you, Robin

He was connected to St. Phillips Church, that is where he married Emma Wall in 1861. He was born about 1844. I do not know anything about his life in England, other than those.
I have just started my family geneology. I am a "newbie", so please pardon me if I am of little help. I am connected to Harry and Emma Clive nee; Wall, who married in or about 1861, 62 63? They emigrated to the US in 1860s. If you are connected to this please email me. supermomrr@aol.com

Thank you, Robin Ramos

Clive, Jones, Scott, Guffy

My connection to the Clive genealogy is through the genealolgy of Peter Jones and his wife, Rebecca (nee Scott) Jones the daughter of James Scott and sister to Margaret (nee Jones) Guffy.

In "History of Northumberland County, PA, 1911, Heritage Collection by J.L.Floyd (name indexed)originally published by J.L. Floyd & Co in 1911.reproduced by Northumberland County Historical Society in 1995. Pages 314, 315 and 316 have the genealogies of Guffy, Jones, Pollock, etc. etc. Page 315 lists children of Peter and REbecca (nee Scott) Jones as: John, Samuel, Isaac, Mathew, Matilda, and Sarah.

Isaac married Jane Wilson and had childen: Samuel Scott, Joseph B., John J., Reuben J., Andrew, Matilda and Margaret.
Isaac and family were well-known residents of the Strattonvile, Clarion County, PA area.

Their son, Samuel Jones, my great grandfather's father, remained in Jefferson county.I have all of his genealogy.

On page 315 is mentioned that Mattie Jones, the daughter of Peter and Rebecca (nee Scott) Jones married Peter Clive and had 4 children: Philip, Hiram, Henry and Rebecca. I have never been able to find anything more about the Clive family.

Peter Jones and Rebecca Jones (possibly once Jonas or Jonason) settled in later years in Clinton County then went to Jefferson county then finally to Clarion County,
near Strattonville.

I have the complete genealogy of Peter and Rebecca (nee Scott) Jones but the Clive connection remains a mystery. The sister, Eliza (nee Scott), of Rebecca (nee Scott) Jones married James Boon and that family also remains a mystery.

I'm willing to share all my findings re the above-noted surnames.Any and all assistance re the Clive genealogy will be greatly appreciated.

Greetings from Spain.

I'm sure the families will be connected somehow, but I daren't add a father and mother to Mezey Clive who was born in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton in 1805, until I see some sort of parish record that proves John and Elizabeth were his parents.
Most of Mezeys family were born in or around Wolverhampton and were mostly baptised at St Peters church there. I had an appoinment booked to go to the archives office while I was in the UK to sort this out once and for all if possible, but the English weather beat me this time and I couln't get there.
You don't happen to have any parish records that prove the line do you?
I had read about the Clives who were gunsmiths somewhere, but could not connect them because of this problem with Mezey. (which I've also seen spelt Mazey, Mesey, Masey and others) I personally think it is Mezey, or just possibly Mazey....I guess my next visit at Easter will tell me for sure.

My email address is les@eagelmoor.co.uk and if you drop me a line there with your email address, I'll invite you to see the tree to see what you make of it. Plus, I can tell you about some other Clives who headed off to the States in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Regards,
Les Clive

Hi Les
I may have a bit of info about our mutual family and confirm that my g/g/g grandfather was Thomas Clive (1773) who I believe was an elder brother of John (1881) They were a very big family and most of the menfolk were active gunsmiths in Birmingham (England) I would assume your branch of the family are in US and this opens up new vistas. Although I was born in Birmingham I migrated to Australia in 1967 and most of my research has been via the internet. I did however begin my search in Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield before my move out here.
Hope I May hear from you sometime
Regards..
Peter Clive

Sharron, George Clive would have probably been related to my GreatGrandfather Joseph who was born at Aston Birmingham in 1826. I/we (!) have a cousin here in England, who has been drawing up a family tree, who might have information regarding George. If you email me with your address I will see if she can provide you with some info. Unfortunately I shouldn't think she is 'on the web' and therefore everything could be a bit lengthy! As a matter of interest I have a copy of an old printed document entitled "History Of The Ancient Family of Clive". It might interest you to know that the first entry is Leofric Saxon Earl of Mercia and his Lady Godiva 1057! Anyway, good luck with your quest. - Richard

-- Previous Message --
>That is remarkably knowledgeable,. and could prove very helpful. A couple of us are trying to trace a believed descendant/collateral descendant called Maria Clive born circa 1820, married (John Matthew Levesley of Sheffield) circa 1855.

Hi, Chris.

I did a quick search of the online BP (1999 ed.), but didn't find a Maria Clive listed amongst the family of Sir Robert (he's found in the Earls of Powis entry). That doesn't necessarily mean that Maria isn't a relative of his (although it could mean that), but it could also mean that she is only listed in an earlier edition of BP. If you're unfamiliar with BP, this genealogical work tends to omit women who died unmarried, or died without issue, or who married relatively obscure men. Having said that, I suggest you find older editions of BP (say, of the 1800s or early 1900s) at any good public library (or university library) and see if you can find Maria.

Best of luck to you.
