JOHN M. JOHNSON & CATHERINE CLODFELTER

I am seeking any information regarding JOHN M. JOHNSON. He was born in 1808 in North Carolina. He married CATHERINE CLODFELTER 30 Apr 1835 in Cape Girardeau, MO. They had seven children: Mary E., Martha Henrietta, Frances E., Maryella Adaline, James B., Louisa Vernisa, and Sarah "Sallie" Catherine. He may have been called "Jake". I believe he served as sheriff of Cape Girardeau from about 1837 - 1842. CATHERINE CLODFELTER JOHNSON appears alone in the June 1870 Federal Census of Cape Girardeau, MO. I believe he died about 1870. His wife, CATHERINE CLODFELTER, died in 1880 in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX. She is buried in West Hills Cemetery in Sherman. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Phillip. I am new to this process of trying to research the Clodfelter family tree. I have gotten back to Daniel (Danl) Clodfelter who was born in either 1825, or 1822 in Davidson N.C. I have not been able as of yet to verify this information or determine his father and mother. HIs wife was Jennette (Jenette) who was born in 1833 in Ohio.I believe they were married in Illinois. The family moved to Bonpas, Richland County, Illinois. I have located them in the Richland County, Illinois Census for 1860. I you would happen to have any information on Daniel or his family, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks. Ronald L.

I looked up those names in my book and none of them are listed. This book only covers Edward's County and most of the people listed in this book lived near the following places: Albion, Bennington, Bone Gap, Browns, Crackelville, Ellery, Grayville, Lexington, Maple Grove, Marion, Palmyra, Samesville, Rockford, Wanborough, West Salem, Illinois.

There is a John Clodfelter born Aug 20, 1780 listed. He lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and came to West Salem in 1832. John died Feb 20, 1845 and was the first adult buried in the Moravian Cemetery in West Salem. He came to West Salem in 1832.
It is my understanding that there were quite a few Clodfelter's that migrated from North Carolina to Illinois and your Sarah Clodfelter was most likely related to this group. Also, it is my understanding that they came from Switzerland and some of them spelled their names differently; Glattfelder.

I believe I purchased the book from the Edwards County Histroical Society, 212 West Main Street, Albion, Illinois 62806.

I did look up Crome surname and there are several listed in this book; such as a Thomas Crome from Norfolk England who settled in Albion. His farm was "north of the road leading to Wanborough from Albion". On May 4, 1842 he married Eliza Billings. They had two children; William R. and Mary Chism. Eliza died and Thomas married Eliza's sister, Anne they have five children: Henry K., Charles, Eliza, Edwin and George. Anne was a deaf mute. There is a lot more so if this is your line you probably want the book as documentation.
