Re: Martin Clopton / Tallapoosa County, AL

It's hard to imagine that there were two Martin Cloptons in the same county since the name was so unusual unless they are cousins. If you take the facts at face value, it would appear that there were two Martins. Are you descended from Hugh Clopton, the son of Elizabeth and Martin? I have no Clopton ancestors. I just wanted to determine what happened to the Bates who was divorced from Elizabeth Johnson between 1844 and 1848. He would be my great-great grandfather.

On the page below, under "Sources" on the left, you will see my name (Barbara Bates) mentioned a few times. A Clopton researcher contacted me several years ago. He is quoting a letter from Jess Bates to me regarding the year Martin died (1853). I take this with a grain of salt as my great uncle Jess wasn't quite all there. According to him, Martin drowned in 1853 while trying to prevent Elizabeth from leaving. My grandmother said he died of typhoid--not quite as dramatic, but sounds closer to the truth. I had heard that Martin and Elizabeth divorced which would be her second. That would be quite scandalous in those days, so who knows if the facts were covered up or altered? She and her children moved to Texas in 1853 where she married again. Is this where you got the info about Elizabeth's divorce and moving out of state? If so, that's why it sounds familiar to me since I supplied it.
http://www.cloptonfamily.org/amerline/b4812.htm

I don't think we've ever talked. Would love to! All of my info came from the Alabama State Archives - just trying to determine the differences between the two Martins so they don't get their documents crossed.

I am descended from Elizabeth. You and I have probably communicated in the distant past because this looks like info I've provided. Elizabeth's son James Kelton Bates is my great-grandfather. I've never been able to find his father, Elizabeth's first husband.

I have a Martin Clopton who married Elizabeth Johnson in 1848 in Tallapoosa County, AL. I know that she left the marriage and moved out of state. Then I show a Martin K. Clopton who married Sarah Greathouse Dallas in 1856 in Tallapoosa County, AL.
Same Martin?
Some researchers show Martin as son of John M. Clopton, another shows Alford Martin.

Hello I am a desd of the pre 1800 VA Kent County Sherrif WIlliam Clopton. It would be nice to know if MALES with that name have coordinated a database of the DNA Haplogroup of what we descend. Maybe someone has donated to Family Tree DNA and can share their genetic SNPs. So many but not always sure how close.

Terry Bohme

Dear List,

I have rescued several old Paddy & Clopton family items. I purchased these items at a sale in north central Texas. They include:

1. Texas State Birth Certificate of Hugh Quindale Paddy. He was b. 22 July 1931 in Calvert, Robertson Co. TX. This is the original certificate, complete with the notary seal. Parents are listed as Ben Paddy & Ruth Clopton.

2. Huge Q. Paddy Hawaiian Infantry Training Center Certificate, dated Aug 4, 1951.

3. Hugh Q. Paddy Honorable Discharge Certificate, dated April 2, 1954.

4. Wheatland School photo, dated 1942. Photo has name of Dorothy Marie Paddy, 8th grade on the back. I would suspect this school was possibly in Robertson County, TX.

5. 8 x 10 photo of Pvt. Alfred Clopton of Hearne, Robertson Co., TX.

If this is your family and/or you may be interested in this collection, please contact me privately at: jmje36@aol.com.

Thank you, Judy in TX
Don't have an answer to your question but can provide a solid clue.

WILL BOOK, 1829 - 1847
The following abstracts were taken from the a book in the Circuit Clerk's Office, Jo Daviess County Court House, Galena, Illinois. It is identified only as "Will Book" on its spine.

CLOPTON, Fleet S. [page 14], of Jo Daviess County, but now in the Territory of Michigan, dated March 17, 1829, proved October 7, 1834 by statement of Alexis PHELPS from Warren County, Illinois. Estate to brother Frederic CLOPTON and sisters Louisa A. LUCKET and Elizabeth STROTHER. Executor: Matthias COMSTOCK who is to transmit the proceeds of estate to Horace LUCKET of Loudon County, Virginia, to be by him divided between my brother and sisters. Witnesses: Alexis PHELPS, John LAY, S. P. WINTER.

Louisa A LUCKET[T] wife of Horace is identified by The Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden, in his "Glassell Family," as "dau. of George Clopton." But the Clopton Family Genealogical Society notes "[t]he identity of her father must be further studied"

[see their "Descendants of William Clopton, of St. Paul’s Parish, Hanover & His Wife Joyce Wilkinson, of Black Creek" which is on-line]

Elizabeth Pigot, daughter-in-law of Thomas Clopton?

Hi

I have just seen an image of a stained glass window from Long Melford Church, Suffolk. On it you have Thomas Clopton (died about 1383), his wife Katherine Mylde and also his daughter in law, Elizabeth Pigot/ Pygot. Can some body tell me how Elizabeth ties into this family as I can find no mention of her so far. Did she marry Thomas' son? (also called Thomas)

Cheers

Lee

Thanks Mike, I think it is hopeless. The only info that I have is that James Daniel Terry was the son of a Mary "Polly". He was born about 1812 in VA. He married Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Collie 3 July 1833 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. By 1836 they were in Giles Co. TN and Mary "Polly" was living with James. Her husband must have died by this point. Also living next door were William Roberts and William Williams. James's sister Elizabeth, married William Roberts and James's daughter, Sarah C. "Collie" married a Williams so I am thinking that these families all traveled to Giles Co. together along with possibly a Pillow family.
I may never find out who the father of James is! But thanks for trying.

Sorry, there is no will for Daniel Terry (son of Benjamin) in Pittsylvania Co. He is not listed in the 1850 census.

There's only one marriage for someone listing their father as Daniel Terry...Minerva C. Terry to Jos E. Anderson in 1830. There may be others, but they didn't list their parents' names.

I have no way to check other court records at this time.

Have been working on my GGGGG Grandfather Waldegrave Clopton Jr.'s Family. I am in need of information. According to the Clopton Family Genealogy site ,Waldegrave Junior married a woman named Mary Brown. I have yet to find any documentation to verify this fact. Another woman who has worked on this family has also come to the same conclusion......According to the 1810 census Mary {Brown} Clopton would have been born about 1765 or prior.Waldegrave being born in 1755. That is documented already. Is there anyone who has information or documentation that can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that a Mary Brown did indeed marry Waldegrave Clopton Junior.
