CLOUGHTON, Willam & dtr Ann (Born Abt. 1693)

I have a brickwall in my CLOUGHTON research. He is William CLOUGHTON, and I know very little about him - born unknown, died unknown & marriage details unknown. However, I do know he had at least one child, a daughter, Ann, born Abt. 1693 - location not known and died Abt. 1746. Ann married Simon THWAITE who probably came from the Yorkshire area. He was born abt. 1687 and died abt. 1758. Their marriage details are unknown.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Ian Marr

Peter, by any chance do you have an Elizabeth Cloughton who married John Johnson, they had a son Joseph George Johnson born 1883, Joseph left for Canada in early 1900's and married in Ontario 1908 to Mabel Shimmins (also from England). I have both the names Elizabeth Cloughton & John Johnson listed as his parents on the marriage record, but cannot find them in England. Joseph's ww1 records say birth is Sunland, England. I can't find it in the BMD either.
Marni

Hi, Andrea. Yes, I remeber you well. I think the last time we heard you were living in Stanhope (but I'm probably wrong!).

We all migrated southwards; Gael is married to Joe with my two little nephews, Matty and Alex. They're living in Cambridge where Gael is still a primary school teacher.

Hope you're doing well. I'll pass on the message and details to Gael when she's back from hols.

Peter

Hi Peter,

I went to school with both you and Gael at Nevilles Cross and then the Johnson. My name then was Andrea Forster, I think the last time I saw Gael was when your parents had the pub in Cornsay. I also remember coming to your house on Lowes Barn Bank for tea after school on a number of occassions. Could you pass on a big hello to her. I would love to hear how she is doing.

Andrea

Hello! The Tow Law Cloughton's aren't linked to my lot, I'm afraid. Although, there is bound to be a connection somewhere down the line but it certainly isn't until before 1664 that I know of.

Your family appear to have migrated to Weardale and then down river towards the coast (quite a few around St. John's chapel, then Wolsingham and then Tow Law (for the coal mining).

I get the impression that your's and my family migrated over time from Claughton in Lancs (which appears to have been one of the Norman feifdoms after 1066). Names were taken from places (I've found Michael and Adam de Claughton in 1208!!). Names also get mis-spelt phonetically and thus ours is with an "o". I know from seeing parish records that mine changed at the signing of marriage in 1701. Also, see Clifton, Clafton as these are derivatives too.

I have seen some of the Tow Law records within my electronic stuff but I'm out on hols for a week or so. I'll forward on what I've go when I'm back in.

In the meantime you're probably best (as far back as 1837) getting hold of the birth certificate(s), that way you get the correct parents for starters. You can order these from the Generla Register Office online.

PS: I'm nearly sure your grandmother was Caygill.

Peter

I am trying to trace my family named Cloughton .
My grandfather was named John (Jack) who was born 1880 in Tow Law/Chopwell area. He married Mary Ann Gaygill.
Hello Peter,
Since I posted my message I discovered that my Robert was chistened Cloughting and changed the family name to Cloughton sometime after my g.grandfather was born (this was through personal choice). I have not had any luck finding a birthplace for my Robert as yet - my g.grandfather and his siblings were all born in York but not Robert. Cloughting is not a very common name so I have at least got an easy trail to follow! I think I might be able to give you a useful address on a one-name study of the Cloughton name - try TREVOR@choo.demon.co.uk. He has a website dedicated to the name Clifton, which is a derivative of Cloughton. He has given me lots of information so may be able to help you too. Interestingly I have an Uncle named Peter Cloughton - he was born and brought up in York however, so I know you're not him. We have lost touch so if you do find him on your travels, please let me know! maybe we are distantly related anyway - I will email you with the family as I know it! Thanks for the message.

I am researching my mothers maiden name - CLOUGHTON - and I know her g.g. grandfather was a Robert Cloughton b.circa. 1851. We think his wife was French but cannot find a name for her. Any help with this (or other leads) would be appreciated

Hello, there. My name is Peter Cloughton and I actually grew up in Durham - although my family is and were based in Sunderland. I started researching my family tree at the beginning of this year and have got quite a lot of information - although not all of the people/dates hang together yet! It looks like your Robert was born in Gateshead.

If you'd like any specific info or could help me in any way please do not hesitate to get in touch.
