Glen, you are talking about my parents. George Bradley Cloward is my father and Rebecca Bellino is my mother. Sharon Kay Harris and George Ray Cloward are my grandparents.
It looks like you thought my mother's maiden name started with a V, but it is a B. Her family is from Southern Italy.

From the little that I know, "Cloward" is the direct variation of the Welsh medieval surname "Lloward", pronounced "Cloward" in the local tongue. It means "raven" or "crow".

My next door neighbor is from Mississippi. My family is from Alabama. The Clowards were originally named McClurad. They lived in PA and married Amish people (Dutch-Irish). After the Civil War, the Clowards left the south (they were pro slavery) for Utah. Some of the Cloward are distinguished in the field of corrections.

Sweet deal! After I posted that thread I did a little searching and found out how the the blood line worked. Does anyone have anything past William SR.? Hi There. I am positive I found you. Spanish Fork Cemetery records show the burial of Seawell Quinn Cloward, with his children listed as you indicate; therefore this is where you tie in....

Jacob Cloward Sr., Catherine Ann PLUCK, and Thomas Poulson Cloward were Utah pioneers with their families in the early 1850s. Of note is that Thomas and his brother, Jacob Cloward, Jr. (my line), are also found in the original 1847 pioneer company (without their families). There are multiple notes in William Clayton's journal about them.

Yes, we know about the family, and continue to do research on it. My husband is a descendent of Thomas Poulson. There is a plaque at the Martin's Cove Visitor Center with the names of the rescuers on it. The name Jake Cloward is among them, so we are led to believe that it must be Thomas's brother Jacob, Jr.

There were two Cloward brothers who were in the company scouting ahead of Brigham Young Jacob Cloward, Jr and Thomas Poulson Cloward. I am a decendent of Jacob Cloward, Jr, but have never heard of him being in the rescue team. There is a record in a Nauvoo library stating that Jacob lived with Brigham Young until his family came to Salt Lake and settled in Provo. Don't know if this will help you.

No, I do not have the book. I frequently see it listed for sale on eBay, but yes I agree, a little too expensive. I do see it listed as avaialble at the Salt Lake City Family History Library, so next time I'm down there I'll look it up (I'm about 30 mins away). Be in touch, Chad.

Chad, would you possibly have access to the book "Prominent Families of New Jersey"? The surnames Clowar and Cloward are listed, but my library doesn't have a copy, it's not in Heritage Quest, and it's really too expensive to buy just to see what's listed for one or two surnames.

Hi Jo: Fascinating information! In reviewing the information you provide, it clearly demonstrates who the Abraham Cloward is who was listed in the Revolutionary War files. Thank you. But I don't think the William Cloward from whom I descend is the same William Clower listed at your website (birthdates are about 1 to 2 generations apart). There's a good chance the family is related, though, as many of the Clowards ended up in Mercer Co, New Jersey, right where Abraham Clower is recorded. Clowards at Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery

Hello.... I'm planning a visit to the Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware in late March. Would sure like to connect with any descendants of the Clowards who are buried in that cemetery. These are those cousins of mine I know are buried there:

Thomas Cloward (b.1812) & wife, Eliza Jane
William Henry Cloward (b.1839) & wife, Hanna E
Thomas Justin Cloward (b.1862)

Abraham Cloward - Revolutionary War Soldier

I came across a records today at Maryland's online archives. There are two listings in the resources regarding an Abraham Cloward who was a private in the Revolutionary War among Maryland's troops:

== "Abram Claward," a private, enlisted 20 Feb 1777, last mustered Jan 1880

== "Abraham Cloward," listed in Capt. Andrew Haynes' Company of Maryland's 5th Regiment

Does anyone have any documentation which would link this particular Abraham Cloward to the "William Cloward" family of Cecil County, Maryland?

Do you have dates? I have James Mason CLOWARD (b Oct- 17- 1826 d May - 27 - 1889) and Mary Ann BAUM (b July - 17 -1835 d April - 24 - 1886) as g-g-grandparents. The only child I have for them at this point is Mary Melissa CLOWARD (b June-7-1863 d Oct - 27- 1889).

Now, I have several siblings for Mary Ann BAUM -- 5 females and 3 males. But I only have birth dates for them. The females are: Jane Elizabeth (9-15- 1827); Susannah (11-5-1837); Maria (3-14-1840); Rachel (3-6-1842); Rachel Ann (3-18-1850). Males: George (11-2-1829); Isaac (4-7-1832); John James (11-18-1844). While I don't have coroboration, I believe the first "Rachel" (3-6-1842) probably died early, and her sister was named for her -- "Rachel Ann" (3-18-1850) -- when she was born at Winter Quarters on the way to Salt Lake City.

Now it's likely that your Elizabeth Ann and the Jane Elizabeth I have are the same person. Widows often married sisters of their deceased wives, or in this case, it might have been a plural marriage. Or my Mary Ann and your Elizabeth Ann are the same person. Dates would really help nail this down.

I'd like to explore this further, so feel free to drop me a line.

Teri. Saw your reply on Cloward Message Boards. I am looking for additional generations and information about some of the same lines that you might be part of. These are adoptive lines for me, but I have made an effort to complete both a biological and adoptive pedigree as is recommended by genealogists and the Family History Library. I have good information from a family Book of Remembrance but would like to add.

The line is Sandra Gale, me, through Floyd Calvin Gale, whose father was William Thomas Gale, whose parents were Charles Gale II and Amanda Jane Cloward. I have her ancestors, including Mary Page to Thomas Poulsen Cloward. I have parents for Mary as Edward Page and Elizabeth. I have Thomas Cloward's parents as Jacob and Catherine Pluck with Catherine's father as Adam. I have Jacob Cloward 1790's father as William and his father as William, b. 1735 Cecil Maryland.

Do you have historical information, land, wills etc. for these lines? I have some biographical information about Thomas Cloward and Jacob Cloward but would like to find the additional wives of both of the William Cloward's. Maryland kept good records I assume. Do you have any records from Maryland?

Bernell - Frank is the son of William Alwin Cloward and Alta Flaticia Davis. Frank had six sisters and two brothers. I can list them all if you like. Frank's wife, Alta Flaticia Davis' maiden name was Hancock. She descends from The John Hancock. I'm sure you have heard of the Mormon Hancocks. Frank (my grandfather) was born in Pima, AZ and died in Washington State in 1976. I live in CA as does my father, Don. Lauran - The only Albert Cloward I have is James Albert, b. Nov. 19, 1860, in Payson, Utah (I don't have death date) married to Elsie Marie Christiansen. James Albert's father was James Mason, who was a polygamist married to Mary Ann Baum and Ellen Adelia Redden. Does this match? I have traced the Cloward name back to William Cloward, b. 1750 in Maryland. Have not been able to trace to England. Let me know if this is your Cloward. There is a Robert S. Cloward who lives in either Arizonia or Texas. He was born I believe though in December on the 25th or thereabouts. He's lived in Washington, Az,UTAH, Texas etc. Fathers name Jacob Elden Cloward sister Lynda, Linda brother Matthew

I do not have a Mary Jane, but do have a Hanna Jane (b. 1833 in Delaware). Mine are all children of Jacob Cloward, Sr (b. 1790 in MD) and Catherine Ann Pluck (by 1795 in PA). Hi, to anyone that is interested, I came across a site called "Dead Fred's". He has an archive of photos from people all over the place. You just type in the name of the person you are looking for and it says if there is a match or not. I found 3 pictures of past relatives there.

If you belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, it will be meaningful to you from a spiritual perspective. I'm also decended from James Mason Cloward and Mary Ann Baum (my g-g-grandparents.) I didn't know he was a polygamist. How interesting. The info I have on James Mason is b. 10-17-1826 in Chester County PA, m. (to Mary Ann Baum) in 1852, d. 5-27-1889 in Moroni, UT

I have James' father as Jacob (b5-17-1790 in Cecil MD, d. 12-5-1851 in Provo, UT).

I have no information on Jacob's father, William.

I'd appreciate any additional information you might have to share.

Ever much so! They are my grandparents. I knew my grandfather but not my grandmother as she died when my father was a child. I've never seen the headstones and did not where Minnie's was. How do you happen to have the picture? A relative by chance?

I am a great grandson of George Albert Cloward and Lucretia Melvina Winward Cloward, I have done quite a bit of geneology on the cloward family line and other lines. But like most of you, I have come to a dead end on the Cloward line.
