If you are looking to buy a copy, try contacting the John Clough Genealogical Society to see if they have any left.

Good luck!
Debbie Cluff Amaro

clough family geneology

My name is Carol Jane Barber(maiden name - married name Leet). I am the youngest of 5 children born to Salvadore Frasquet and Catherine Kerry Barber. However her name is listed as Katie G. in the Woodstock Vt. birth records. Born August 2, 1989. Vol 3 - pg 9. Her parents are Donald C and Minnie Clough. Her Sister - Mattie Mae born on September 9, 1987. Vol 3 - pg 3 of the Woodstock birth records.
During my visit to Woodstock I was abile to find these birth records, some death records as well as a Clough family burial plot.
The archivist was not available. Am hoping to return to Woodstock on July 8th to meet with her. Also, Woodstock is such a beautiful place, for some reason I feel drawn to it. Am planning on taking pictures.
Am contacting you as I feel it would be to my advantage to know if I am related to the John Clough society before going back to Woodstock. Your geneology society looks intersting, however would like to know if I am related before joining.
Thank you for your consideration and help.

Carol J. I have just recently begun working on my family tree and Eunice is my g-g-g-grandmother. Would love to find out more of where she was from. I have New Hampshire, but nothing more about the girls family. Would love to know if you've found more!

Hello -
I have recently discovered a photo of a Cluff Family Reunion taken around 1900 (?) in Arizona, of Joseph and Phoebe Cluff and their family. I can only identify their son David Cluff (my 2nd great-grandfather) and his wife Sarah Elda Mattice. If you are interested in a copy of this photo or think you may be able to help identify some of the family members, please contact me here or at stacyshepherd@cox.net.

Thanks!

Has anyone ever heard of a George Abram Cluff? I know nothing about this man's siblings or parents. None of his descendants seem to have a picture of this man. He was born Dec 22, 1833. He was never forth coming about his life before he married Eliza S. Burch Oct 8, 1855 in Whiteside Co, IL. He signed his name Cluff on the marriage license but changed his name to Clauff after his marriage. One census says he was born in England. Another says he was born in NJ.

His first daughter was Mary Elizabeth "Molly" (mother's name?) and second daughter Johanna Margaret - after his mother-in-law. A third daughter was Sarah Rebecca. His first son was George Ira. George after his father? as Ira was his father-in-law's name. A second son was Charles Edward.

He told his son Charles E. Clauff that he was raised in a big house by the beach of the Hudson Bay - Mouth of the Hudson River? He came "down the River, met Eliza Burch and got married". "He led wagon trains to the gold fields" - CO or CA? There is usually a grain of truth in family stories - the problem is which grain?

Johanna Margaret [Bacon] Burch Perry was the step sister of Aaron Noble Sr. Mr. Noble led many wagon trains to CA and ID in the 1850's. It is possible that George A. Cluff/Clauff worked with him. Mr. Noble was living in Kenosha Co, WI in 1850. In the mid 1850's Mr. Noble led a train of families from Whiteside Co, IL and WI to the Healdsburg, Sonoma Co, CA area. It is very possibe that George A. Cluff/Clauff worked for him during this time.

Many have searched but none have been able to go back another generation for George Abram Cluff/Clauff. Help!
Reta Kleve
rkleve@yahoo.com
I am interested in one of the daughters of Scarborough Merrill and Sarah Cluff--the daughter who was also named Scarborough. I am seeking any evidence of whether and who she married. I have an ancestor, John P. Pournelle (Pernel, Purnell, Pournel, Pournell) who married as "Scubra" (prob. "Scarborough") from "near Newark" in MD. It is perhaps possible that John P. is a son or relative of John J. Purnell, who owened a small property in Mattapony, not far from Scarborough Merrill's property in Pitt's Creek, and that they married/eloped in about 1795 on his discharge from the army, before heading to the Georgia frontier.

Dear Dee,
I am sorry that I cannot help you with who your Mother was but I am interested in the names Clibborn and possibly Cluff. My great grandmother was a Mary Clibborn from Ireland. She would have been born about 1832, possibly in Tipperary. She emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, in 1860 and then on to New Zealand in 1863. My late Father thought her Mother's maiden name was Cluff. So far I have not been able to locate Mary. What interests me particularly is your comment re Whittier, California. I have long been interested in this Clibborn family as I have located an Oliver Clibborn who lived and died there. He also had a son called Oliver. My Father's first name was Oliver and his Mother named her other three sons after family members. I have thought she may have been in touch with Oliver's parents. Please do contact me and let me know whether we have any connection with you. Dad thought that Mary had brothers who emigrated to America.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Yours sincerely,
Pam Clark.

My email address is" pamandterry@ashburton.co.nz

I have no information on Walter Dean Snyder so I know nothing about the Holloways or Crewse families. Shawn Snyder if Joyce and Walter's granddaughter by marriage. She would be a better contact than I.

Hello Tula. I live in the UK too. The whole Dearie/ Cluff family can be found on the 1880 US census in New York on the IGI/Family Search website. Mary Cluff widowed is keeping house, her father is Rchard Dearie male 80. He was born in 1800 in Glasgow. He married at least 3 times. The children of his first wife lived in New Orleans. With his second wife Elizabeth Hogg he had Annie, George, Mary and Bessie. (Who is also in the household on the 1880 US census as Elizabeth McCastline). They all lived in London for a time, then he went back to New York with Bessie and Mary and Annie stayed in the UK. (Very long and shocking story behind Richard Dearie, but I will leave that for another time)
I have an old family tree written in the 1930s by Annie's daughter, which says Mary (very nice) married Cluff (Peterboro?) . They had 2 sons Burgess (died) and Richard who married and had a daughter who married Loftus of New York. The tree also has Bessie marrying 1. Mc Castlen 2. Robinson. I am pretty sure this is the right family. I'm descended from Annie. I know that Annie was born in New York and Mary I think in Philadelphia . If you have any more information about Mary's birthplace or where she lived, I would be very interested because this part of my research is missing. I have copies of 4 photographs of Mary signed on the back or front. One taken in a 6th avenue New York studio and one of her with her 2 sons from a Union Square studio in New York. Very stong chin! She also appears in a wedding group at my great uncle George's wedding in Beckenham in 1909. She's on the ship's passenger list of the Cedric going back to New York in the same year. I suppose she would be my great great Aunt.
All the best,
Claire

Tula,

Has any male in your family had a DNA analysis...? My family has a perfect match with a Samuel CLOUGH who came to America around 1880 from Cheshire region in England. However, my ancestor was born in 1815 in Kentucky in the USA. They must have had common ancestors in England.

I see on Google that Nottingham is only about 75 miles from Cheshire. Could there be a connection between our folks...?

I'd like to invite you all to join the CLUFF Mailing List. He married Mary Dearie on 1st July 1868 in Manhattan New York USA They had 2 sons Burgess Cluff born May 1869 & Richard (Dick is a nickname of Richard!)born 4th August 1870 both born in New York USA. Burgess Cluff senior died 13th March 1871 aged 43 in USA.
Burgess Cluff junior died 28th April 1912 aged 42 in USA.
Richard Burgess died May 1964 aged 93 in Virginia USA.
Just wondering if this is the same family as yours. Did your Mary Dearie ever marry? Could they be the same?
Look forward to hearing from you
Best wishes & a happy new year
Tula Ticehurst (nee Cluff)

Yes, Minnie had a brother Frank (b 1873). In addition, their parents, Thomas R. (ca 1828 KY) and Margaret E. (PEACOCK) CLUFF had John H. (b 1858), Margaret A or N (b Jan 1860), Josephus M. (b 1865), Anna (b 1876) and Anita or Austa (b 1879). I found this out from census records so there may be more children. I'm looking for a male descendant from this family using the surname of CLUFF who would help us out with a DNA Study. We're trying to find the brothers of Charles C. CLUFF (b 1815 KY) living primarily in Highland Co., Brushcreek Twp., OH and Parnell P. CLUFF (b 1822 OH) who lived not only in the same county as Charles but also in Pike Co., Perry Twp, OH (same as Thomas R.) as well as Illinois where he is buried. Descendants of Charles and Parnell match. We need more participants from the CLUFF's of southern Ohio and to connect them to Reuben and Catherine (HENTON) CLUFF. Please help.

Is it ironic that Thomas R CLUFF's family lived in Cynthiana, Perry Twp., Ohio. I looked up Cynthiana, KY and it is in Harrison County. That is where it is stated that a known son of Reuben and Catherine lived. We need DNA participants!! Financial help will be found if needed!

Later...Nancy Cluff Siders
Roswell, NM
siders@cableone.net

George Abram Cluff/Clauff

Does anyone know anything about the parents/siblings of my great grandfather - George Abram Cluff or Clough? b Dec 22, 1833 in NY or NJ. Both places are listed on census forms. He told his son that he grew up in a big house near the beach of the Hudson Bay. This probably meant either the mouth of the Hudson River or a small bay up river. It is very possible that his parents were not born in that area. George A. Cluff said he had lots of brothers and sisters but did not seem to have any contact with them as an adult. No pictures that have been handed down to his descendants seem to be of his family.

George A. Cluff left home and went west at a young age. Oral family history is that he was a wagon master and led freight trains along the Platte River to Denver CO in the early 1850‘s - true. As wagon master he had told his men not to shoot at the Indians. When the Indians came up to the wagon train he would give them trinkets and food. The story goes that one of the men on the train got frightened and shot and killed one of the Indians. George left that man behind for Indian Justice. He told the crew that if he didn’t the Indians would attack the train and kill them all.

George came to Fulton, Whiteside Co IL, by boat, on the Mississippi River, with several Indian men. He married Eliza Susannah Burch in 1855 in Whiteside Co IL. They farmed in Garden Plains twp, Whiteside Co IL. In the late 1870’s they moved to Ringgold Co IA where George and Eliza run a hotel/cafe. Descendants have never tried to research this line because family history said he changed his name. I do not think he changed his name - just the spelling after he married. The marriage certificate is signed George Abram Cluff and all census and property titles are signed Clauff. A daughter signed her marriage certificate Clough.

George Cluff never talked about his family. His oldest daughter was Mary Elizabeth - possibly named after her paternal grandmother. His second daughter was Johanna Margaret - named after her maternal grandmother. His oldest son was George Ira - named after paternal grandfather? and maternal grandfather. His other son was Charles Edward - these are not Burch names. Does anyone have a record of a George Cluff m to Mary Elizabeth Unknown that lived in NY or NJ in the early 1800’s. George A. Cluff/Clauff had no obit - just a small death notice in the paper. There are lots of pictures of his wife and children but none of George?? George was intelligent and well educated. His descendants are very talented. Artistically and musically.

Family history said that George killed a man and that is why he had no contact with his family. I think the Indian Justice story is where the “killed a man” story came from and I can’t believe that would be a reason for being cut off from his family in the 1850‘s. But it is possible that someone died and that was the reason he left the east and his family home and went to the Midwest.

Does anyone have this man in their Cluff/Clough family history? It is possible that “he was born on the wrong side of the blanket”.

HELP !!
Reta Kleve
