Medford, Oregon Nov. 5, 1980
To: The Chamberlain Register
Chamberlain, S.D.
From: Allen E. Clute
It has come to my attention that an informal history of early Chamberlain has been printed. I have also been informed that it contains no reference to a certain prominent family. I realize that it is highly unlikely that another such history will ever be published, but just to set the record straight:
The Richard James Clute family came to Chamberlain some time between 1884 & 1889. My father, Perry H. Clute, was born in White Lake, S.D., in March, 1884. His sister LeOtia,(Mrs.Albert J. Norton)was born in Chamberlain in July, 1889.Charles Edgar(Ed)Clute was forn in Chamberlain in March 1891. John Allen Clute was born in Chamberlain in October 1894. Maude Clute (Mrs. Frank L. Wood) was born in Gunnison,CO in August 1882.
All the Clute children except John Allen graduated from high school in Chamberlain.John Allen graduated...in Presho, where Grandpa Clute had a harness shop until he retired in the early 30's. .....All the Clute children....went to college. ..All the Clute boys became druggists. They each owned drug stores ... in S.D. My father Perry was elected president of the S.D. Pharmacy Assoc.in 1919.All three Clute boys were active Masons....
Grandpa Clute was a harnessmaker. He emigrated from Canada as a young boy. He had his own harness shop in Chamberlain, at one time he owned a store as well. He was buried in Murdo, S.D. in June 1936, along side his wife, Emma, and his son, Perry. Many years before he died he received his 50 year masonic medallion...Grandma Clute had been married before to a man named Floyd, who died, leaving her with a daughter, Vivian. Vivian Floyd was buried in Chamberlain in 1899, having died at the age of 28. She had been ill most of her life. Her tombstone is still legible, in the cemetary on top of the hill.
Two Clute's of that generation are still living. Le Otia lives alone in a house she designed and had built in Chadron, Neb. She was 91 in July. Allen (J.A.) was 86 in October, and lives in a retirement hotel in Long Beach, Calif. .....I (Allen E. Clute)lived in Chamberlain during the typhoid epidemic, and at one time was trying to take the place of 3 men...I helped translate from Spanish to English the instructions on vials of fever serum that had been flown in from the Library of Medicine, Havana, Cuba.
This is a sketchy outline of the Clute family in Chamberlain. How could a family who lived there so early, who lived there so long and so prominently have walked through any history of Chamberlain without leaving footprints? Yours truly, Allen E. Clute.

Hi Stephanie, Nice to hear from you again. The Clute search goes on.

John Stillwell Clute, born 28 Dec. 1801, Charleston, Montgomery County, New York (needs further verification) died 28 November 1896, New West Minster BC.(is verified through British Columbia death certificate), buried in the Masonic Section of ......... Cemetery. (need to look that up in my records again)In the section of this cemetery are three John Stillwell Clutes; the first 1801, the second 1840 born in Ontario and the third born in 1867 New Westminster, BC. All buried in close proximity. Along with other west coast Clute family members.

J. S. married Maria Wood Clute in Ernestown, on 25 December 1827. They lived, until Maria's death, in Picton, Ontario on 18 Nov. 1881. Maria is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Picton, Ontario. On the same plot with her are two of her grandchildren, John W, and Mary Scott. John died at age 7 and Mary at age 3, in 1863. Likely of something like smallpox. They died ten days apart.

A few years after Maria's death, John S the first moved to British Columbia to be near his son, the 1840 J. S. where he died in 1896.

This information has come from public records and several west coast Clute families. In September I paid my respects at the grave of Maria Clute and the two Scott Children. This was the Scott plot. The parents of the Scott children were David Scott and Frances Eliza Clute Scott. My gr-grandparents.

Also while in that region of Canada I found the grave of Agnes Clute Ross and her husband Lewis Ross in Port Hope, Ontario. Agnes was the sister of Frances E.

Using Derick Clute and Katherine Shonts as likely parents I find three surviving children. A son, Richard, born 1789, a daughter, Mary, born 1790 and John Stillwell born 1801. Also listed in other sources are the names of Ann, David and Henry. Nothing to verify these names. However, given the distance between 1790 and 1901 it is highly possible that these three children were born and died in that time frame. Who knows.

Did Brian list the children he had? Wondering if they match the three I have listed as possibles???

As for the West Coast Canada Clutes there is a wealth of public information for anyone who cares to search and I would be happy to lend a hand.

For now,
Nancy

The first John Stillwell Clute is the son of Derick Clute and Katherine Shorts ( or at least t here are some sources that say so.) Born 29 Dec 1801.. possibly either New York or Canada. He died 28 Dec 1896 in Enestown, Ontario, Canadea.. Married Maria Wood on 25 Dec. 1827. This information came years ago from a Brian Harling.. No proof that I can find. He gave several children from the Derick marriage, but the only one that is still likely is John Stillwell.. No idea why the name.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for replying. My STILLWELLs began with John who married my g-ggrand aunt, Maria Smyth d/o John and Mary Sparkhall Smyth. John was the son of a Baptist minister in Haldimand Co. ON, Thomas Blakely Stillwell b.supposedly in NYC 1808. His family came to Canada when he was 12. He married Elizabeth Hestand/Heistand d/o John Hestand nd Margaret Fretz. They had nine children, John being the eldest b. 1826. John and Maria had 11 Children. They lived for a time in ON then moved to Mecosta Co MI and later to CA. I wonder if there might be a connection since Thomas B was from NYC. I have always been curious about that.
Any thoughts?

Hi, sorry for the delay. As for the Stilwell name, John Stilwell Clute born in 1802,is the first Stilwell I have run into. He is the father of John Stilwell Clute born in 1840 (near Picton, Ontario)and the grandfather of John Stilwell Clute, born in 1867. Nothing like making life confusing. It has been my opinion that the "Stilwell" name came from New York State where the Clute family originated from. However, I have not been able to tie it to any one family in the east. Your J. S. Clute is the one who was born in 1840, in Ontario, Canada..

FYI, J. S. the first, 1802, was married to Maria Wood born in New York State.

I am interested to know about your Stilwell line.
Regards,
Nancy

Jenny's mother was my g-g-aunt, Jane Sparkhall.
My curiosity was peeked by the Stillwell name as I have Stillwell's in my tree and wondered if you might know if John's middle name was a family name and where it originated?

Thanks for trying Stephanie. You were trying to help me find Richard about 9 yrs ago. Maybe that is why your notes have him. Emily remaried in 1864 so if Richard remarried he could be anywhere with any wife. Wibur's census' say his father was born in NY,PA,& OH. I need to connect Richard to wife Emily Butler or son Wilbur in the 1850's in either MI or WI. If course, that was before records were kept. A Richard Clute got a land grant in Adams Co. near Mauston, WI in 1860, but I can find nothing in census or anything else. Suggestions are welcome. It is good hearing from you again.

I am trying to find any information on the Clute family that lived in the Trenton, Ontario area from around 1920 to 1970? As a small child I visited an apple orchard they ran . My Grandfathers name was Percival Arthur Clute. He married Irene Jean Kerr and they had one daughter Sharon Lynn Clute ( my mother). I know they are related to the Finland family. Only names I can remember are Paul and Susan Finland.

Percy had a brother Fred who was part of the 48th Highlanders in WWII and a sister Joan ( Buss ) who passed away in 1991

Any info you could send me would be fantastic! I think I may be the last of this line??

There are two Julia Clutes.. Asa Clute married Dinah. He was born ca. 1814, and lived in Wilton,NY and then Saratoga Springs. He was a farmer and in 1870 was in Wilton. He is probably the son of NIcholas Clute and Cynthia Hill.. if so he was born 11 June 1814. I have two tentative children for him. Ann in 1860 and Nelson in 1850. Add in the Julia, but I dont have records on her.

It appears that the border between Vermont and New York changed in the late 1700's to early 1800's, It is possible that when they were born it was Vermont, but is now NY. Did most Clutes enter the US through Canada back then ?

But I would be willing to bet at this period, that this is one of the New York Clutes..

Clutes From Vermont that settled in Dresden area of NY

Hello All,

I traced my Clute line back to Allen Clute and Harriet Hilliker. They are listed on several census as being born in Vermont in the early 1800's. They settled in Dresden, Whitehall, New York and had a large family. I am descended throught their son Charles Clute. Does anyone have any information on Clutes from Vermont. Charles married a Bessie Barber whose parents were John Barber and Adeline Ripley, also of the Whitehall area. Charles and Bessie settled in the East Corinth area and are buried in the rural cemetary there. Any information is appreciated

This Peter is a genuine mystery. I found him in South Cemetary in Ashtabule.. He was buried with Betsy Clute White 1782-1871 and Peter Clute 1904-1904. He seems to have had a son Charles M... but in the 1850 census in Ohio, I find Omi in Jefferson county and Richard and Abraham in Sheffeld.. None in the Ashtabula area. Is he in the 1860 census there?? Who was Charles MotherI think that Charles is Charles May Clute, son of Henry Clute and Nancy May.. born 11 May 1864, died 24 April 1949, both Ohio, South Cemetary. If so on 14 Feb. 1884, he married Louisa Kein and had at leas Emory Lee 1899, married Nellie Addicot and Grace May 1884 and Eleanor Ann 1887

The first Clute in the US was Capt. Jan.. The spelling of his name was variable.. Clute, Knute,Cnute,But it was always recognizable as the same name. He is listed as a soldier in the original church records and contrary to most Dutch at the time, he had a surname.. I suspect he could have been of German origin.

John did not leave many records. I got some of the information on his children from various descendents over time. His father seems to have been Nicholas Clute, born 29 Nov 1767 Schenectady, died 30 Sept 1852 < Montgomery, Logstown,NY on A. G. Garr Farm, He married in January 1789 to Maria Hall, 24 March 1765-29 Oct 1838, child of: William Hall and Maria Veeder. Nicholas is the son of Johannes Clute and Jannetje Ouderkerk.
Children: Jannetje married Peter Fredericks, Hannah married Court Willette, Viann married Peter Fredericks( as second wife after her sister died), Nicholas married Sophia Van Patton, Maria married Garrett Brokaw and John married Mary S. Abel. This family seems to have lived in Montgomery county and there may be records available in that county to help pin them down.

John Clute And Mary Ann Schuyler Able

Looking for any information on John Clute who married Mary Able. Mary was the daughter of Philip Able( Abel) and was born in Glen, Montgomery County New York. John Clute and Mary Able had a daughter named Mary Ellen Clute born 21 April, 1835 who married Samuel Craig Bauder , son of Lewis Bauder and Matilda Jane Craig. Lots of Clute options but no idea where this John Clute fits in. Any help would be greatly appreciated

It is possible that George Clute is the brother of John. John is the son of Gerrit Jacob Clute and his wife Sara Evans ( Heavens). There is a brother George in the records. He was born 13 Feb 1783 and baptised in Schaighticoke,NY.. No proof however.

No apology required,
and thanks for your reply. The Theodore that I would be interested in (we may have already had this conversation) is the one who married Libbie and ended up in Wiscosin. Did he have a sister Jane?
Thanks.

Sorry, I clicked on a reply to quite a different query and somehow it came up on yours.
I have Three Theodore Clute in my failes.. Theodore, born ca. 1794, who married a Plumma(?) and had Martine Van Buren, 1833, Puch, Peter, Matilda, Theodore, Alvira, Marietta and Edwin. Then a Theodore who9 married Libbie and ended up in Wisconsin and a Theodore who was the son of Nicholas Clute and Mary Well and was born 11 April 1861 in Ohio.

Hi,

If you are responding to my post regarding a Theodore or Jane Clute, it appears that the information you're providing is not related to my query. Thanks anyway. Best of luck in your own genealogy research.
