Re: CLUTTER research collaboration

The problem with splitting up the CLUTTERs into areas is that they may all have come from the same initial branch. For example the Samuel CLUTTER who married Rachel DENMAM in NJ, stopped in western PA on the migration eventually to Knox Co OH. So is he in the NJ branch where he was born, the PA branch where he lived from 1800-1816, or the OH branch where he died?
The Samuel CLUTTER who married Hester WORKMAN was probably also born in NJ a few years after the first Samuel. Then he likely lived in the PA/WV area before migrating to Hocking Co OH.
These overlaps will make research a little tougher.

I'm looking for any information on Clutter's from Washington County, Pennsylvania. All I have is William Clutter born about 1752 who had a son, Paul born about 1785 in Scotland and died about 1851 in Washington County.Paul married 1. Martha died ( 10/26/1846) in Jefferson Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and 2. Nancy who was born about 1810 and also died in Jefferson Township. Paul and Martha had a son, Rueben, (b abt 1828 Mifflin Twp)who married Elizabeth Peach in 1852. His marriage to Nancy produced a daughter, Sarah, (b abt 1853)married Samuel Morrison and a second daughter, Mary (b abt 1848). My email is erpeach5@aol,com. Many thanks.

It shows Israel 38-KY, Margaret 32-IN, John 14-IN, Martha 10-IN, Howard A 8-IN, Francis 5-IL.
I believe this Israel must be the youngest son of Paul CLUTTER of Scott Co KY, later Warrick Co IN.

Wish I could sort this out for you, but I have not done enough work on this line.

Gail, I may have a tie-in for you. Samuel Clutter (b, VA abt 1823) moved to Ohio and died in Iowa where he was living with his daughter. His brother, James, went to Indiana. James' daughter, Anna Medora Clutter, married Samuel Eli Rudy and went to Washington State. So there is both Iowa and Washington here... I think we need to talk.
Joeline

My branch of the Clutters

I am looking for the parentage of James Clutter, b. Virginia abt 1818 and his brother Samuel Clutter b. Virginia abt 1823. I'm sure there are siblings but I don't know who they might be.
James lived in Indiana, Ohio and Iowa, dying in Iowa, I believe. Samuel's kids were born in Mercer Co, OH. James first married Rachel Parrish, married Cecilia Parish in 1841 in Vermillion Co, IN. Then it appears that he also married a Ceilia Parrish sometime after 1850, In Indiana. Rebecca and Cecilia appear to have been sisters. Not unusual for that time frame. There were children from both marriages.. Meredith, John, Anna Medora, Harriet Lucinda and Ella E. Anna Medora went to Washington State, Harriet and Meredith went to Oklahoma. I do know for certain that Anna Medora was first cousin, once removed to Herbert W. Clutter, who was portrayed in the book *In Cold Blood* as she spoke about this to members of the family. Any Virginia Clutters here?

I suspect that there is some relation between your Clutters and the ones I am researching. What I have is very limited.
Anna Medora Clutter (1856-1933) born in Indiana, father was James Clutter,(b. 1818, in VA). James had a brother, Samuel, (b.1823, VA) who went to Ohio (Mercer Co. area, I think). Samuel had a son, James Alexander Clutter, who was born in Mercer Co.OH. Samuel was father to Herbert W. Clutter of Kansas. Anna Medora Clutter was g-grandmother to the person I am helping with this genealogy. Any information you can help with will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and this Clutter family ties to a Parrish family.

Margaret or Ross Clutter, Moberley, Missouri USA

Trying to find information on William HALCROW who died 24 May, 1927 in Moberly, Randolph county, Missouri USA. A RAOGK volunteer couldn't find an obituary for him, but she did find that a Mrs R. H. CLUTTER [a widow] paid for the funeral expenses which were substantial for 1927.

HALCROW is my main line of investigation, its a name solely originating in the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands off the northern tip of Scotland. Immigrants came to Canada and the US usually in the 1800s

Am trying to determine who Wm HALCROW was by figuring out his link to the CLUTTER family in Liberty township, Missouri. They were probably Ross and Margaret CLUTTER. Margaret was born in Missouri, interestingly both her parents were born in Scotland. Trying to determine how these families were linked. Margaret was born 1876 according to the 1900 Census form for Liberty township. They'd been married 4y at that census. The first child, Arthur was born 1902, then Mary about 1905.

Have looked on Ancestry.com and the IGI. Also the Missouri Deaths database was checked. Finally found Margaret spelled Margart and got her maiden name which was seen as McLENNAN but that doesn't help much, I don't have any known McLENNAN links.

Census records have found this family but nothing to explain a link strong enough to pay $140 for the funeral costs. Guidance gladly accepted for finding out Margaret CLUTTER or Ross CLUTTER and their links to Wm HALCROW.

Hi Doug, I'd very much like to see your Clutter info. I'm descended from Jacob Clutter to John Clutter to his daughter, Martha Diadema Clutter Ocheltree. I'd appreciate any info on this line. Thanks.

I just looked up John Clutter at the DAR Library in DC today. I too am trying to find him. I see the Bath Co. info. I'm wondering if he is the John Clutter who married Catherine Sarah Wilson in Monongalia Co. in 1816. I am descended from one of their children, Martha Diadema Clutter Ocheltree. I sent off to the WV Archives to ask them to do a search for this man. I don't know if they will find anything or not. His father, Jacob Clutter, was in Hampshire Co. during the American Revolution. John is supposed to be from Rockbridge Co.VA, but I'm not sure if that is correct. Have you found out more about him since you posted your query? Ann Powers
Hello David,

Thank you very much! However, I can not take credit for the research part of it. Bill Hampshire did all the leg work on Casper. I too knew very little about the Clutter side of my family. The Clutter(s) info eluded me terribly. Everyone has passed on except for my moms brothers and her. Thinking my family would live forever I did not ask the ?'s when I should have.
Once I found Bill, the whole family just opened right up. So, I have to give credit where it is due.

How can I help you with your info. Who was your father? I will be able to tell from there what info I have. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you again,

Kimberly

Hello Kimberly,

What a pleasure it was to read your wonderful historical account of Casper Ean Clutter! My name is David Clutter and for most of my 39 years I've known little to nothing of my family's history. Thank you so much for your terrific research. If you have more information that you'd be willing to share I'd love to read further. Thank you again.

Sincerely,

David Clutter
Madison, Wisconsin
