Seeking any info on Marie G Coady, June Coady &/or William Coady of Boston / Malden / Everett, MA &/or their descendants

Hi Coady researchers,
I am searching for ANY information, hints or leads you have our there on Marie G Coady, June Coady and/or William Coady, who I believe to be children of William J. Coady, Jr. and Marie Gladys Coady. I have been told that Marie Gladys' maiden name may have been Poirier.

I believe June and William (siblings?) were probably born in Boston, Malden or Everett, Massachusetts sometime between 1933 and 1940, roughly.

My ONLY record of June Coady is the 1958 Malden City Director, where she is living at 24 Lynn St with Marie G Coady and Robert Burlen. Her occupation is "bindery worker", so this Robert Burlen is either the father/son of the famed Robert Burlen & Son Book Bindery. That is all I know.

My ONLY record of this particular William Coady is the 1964 Malden City Directory, where he is living at the same address with Marie G Coady. His occupation is "sheet metal worker".

Anything you come up with is tremendously helpful. Thanks!
Zach Feris

I show a John Coady marrying a Bridget Flanagan on Feb 12, 1872 in Quebec City. They had two kids, one born in 1874, the other born in 1875. Both died at about one year of age. Do you have either a John Coady or a Bridget Flanagan in your Coady family tree?

Thanks in advance,
Dan Flanagan

PS I can be reached here, if you prefer:
dflanagan@austin.rr.com

Coady of Newport New Hampshire

I have information that Pauline Bowlan Strange may have married a man with the last name COADY in Newport, NH, sometime between 1966, when her first husband died, to 1992, when she died.

She is listed in Social Security Death notice as Pauline T. Coady.

The only Coady I find in the area is a family headed by John A. Coady and his wife Mary L. (Moore), who had Ethel, John A. "Jack", and Richard H. I believe it may have been John A. "Jack" Coady that she was married to, but I am not able to confirm that.

Anyone have any info about this, or about the Coady family of Newport, NH?

For F. Coady only regarding Coady/Hoolihan

Were Michael and Thomas from Old Leighlin, Carlow or from the general Co. Kilkenny area?

They would be before the time of my uncles - born 1890's, so would be a different generation. You would really need to find out where they were born, which would not be easy if they are not documented in any census. Your best chance would be to check the U.S. census or deaths from that period on. Irish records are only available from 1901 and 1911. If you have some idea of the area or townland they came from, you could check the Griffiths Valuation Records, which are available from the 1800's.

Keep searching and good luck.

Re: Coady Family Carlow and Kilkenny

Tom Coady, Parknakyle, Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow, joined The Royal Dublin Fusiliers and fought with the British Army in WW1. He later joined the U.S. army and fought in WW2.
Frank Coady, joined the Irish Army 1922.
Mike Coady fought with the U.S. Army in WW2.

The three brothers, Tom, Frank and Mike Coady therefore have the rare distinction of being involved in three different conflicts, in three different armies, in three different decades, and all survived to live out their lives in the Bronx area of New York. These facts are verified by draft papers. Mike Coady represented the NYPD in the heavyweight boxing division.

The above three were brothers of John Coady (who inherited the family farm at Parknakyle, Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow) and later of Clonmore, Hackettstown, Co. Carlow, and Bennettsbridge, Co. Kilkenny. John Coady, while at Parknakyle, owned two champion pedigree Clydesdale stallions which were highly valued for breeding purposes. John Coady's wife was Margaret (Peg) Ryan of Ballytiglea, Borris, Co. Carlow, also from farming stock.

Two of the Coady sisters became nuns and entered the teaching and nursing professions in the U.S.

John,

Your G. Grandparents are buried in the St. Lazerian church grounds. The Coady's have a few headstones there which still faintly show the name. However, the headstone does not show my grandparents, but they are definitely buried there. In the next year or two, I am going to get their names engraved on that headstone.

Also, of the original Coady farmhouse, nothing remains. A water spring well still goes by the name of Coady's Well. It is exactly opposite where the Coady house was, on the other side of the road. Also in the same area, was Coady's Lane. A Bill Daly bought my dad's farm, and his son Bill now lives there.

My grand uncle and g/aunts (Coady's), who never married, lived on a farm down a long lane at Raheen, Clonmore, Old Leighlin, but that farm was left to Mary Carey, the wife of Denis Carey who owned the pub in Old Leighlin. This pub has been in the Carey name since the 1500's. Mrs. Carey's maiden name was Wynne and was a first cousin of my father. Matt Carey is the son of Mary and Denis and still lives there. You have numerous cousins in the Old Leighlin area.

John,

Your G. Grandmother's name was Bridget (Nee Coonan) and not Margaret Coady. John & Bridget were my grandparents, therefore we are cousins. You may be confusing them with my parents John, [son of John and Bridget) and Margaret (Nee Ryan of Ballytiglea, Borris] which is understandable after all these years. My parents (John and Margaret) did live at Parknakyle for a while after their marriage. My dad sold the farm at Parknakyle and bought another farm at Clonmore, Hackettstown, near Tullow, Co. Carlow.

Both my sister Anastasia (Anne) and myself have family (wedding) pictures of your G. Grand parents, but unfortunately no pictures of my father when he was younger. Perhaps we can eventually exchange some of these 'photos and get a proper identification for each of them.

I actually knew it was Bridget, but was thinking of my grandmother who was named Margaret, born Kavanagh of either Carlow or Kilkenny, I do believe that we have had contact before ad I believe Paddy and Helen Moore may have sent me your email. As I stated, I know my grandfather had two brothers here in America, but I have no idea what became of them. I do remember that Auntie Bridget , my great aunt and your aunt, came to America and my father would sometimes visit her.
Any idea about the two brothers?

Hello, I have a Thomas Coady and Bridget Hoolihan as witnesses to a baptism of Thomas Coady son of Michael Coady and Catherine Murphy. The baptism took place 25 Sept. 1842 at Church of St. John the Baptist, Syracuse, NY. I believe I have found the ships record of 1836 with brothers Michael and Thomas arriving in NY from Ireland. My ancestor, Michael Coady, moved from NY to Ontario Canada about 1844. There is no record of Thomas Coady in Canada so I assume he stayed in NY. Michael's death record states parents Richard Coady and Catherine Moore. Does any of this sound familar?

Coady Family Carlow and Kilkenny

Coady Family - originally farming stock from Parknakyle, Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow, and now Kilkenny areas and Dublin.

It is understood that the original Coady arrived with the Normans into Ireland and was involved in the Confederation Of Kilkenny (when Kilkenny was made a City by Royal Charter) under the name of Odo Archidiaconus, and became, Odo Archidiekne, Odo L'Ercedekne or Archdeacon, later to become Oda, McAdoo, Codd or Cody, Coady.

The name originated during the Norman Conquest of England (Bishop Odo) and arrived in Kilkenny in the mid-12th Century with the army of Strongbow. Together with prominent churchmen, the Coady background would also include knights as records exist of a request for knights to assist in wars on the different continents during the middle ages.

Bishop Odo was a half-brother of the Norman William the Conqueror, and assisted in the Conquest of England. it is thought that the Odo who arrived in Kilkenny was also a Bishop, hence the name Archdeacon.

Following the Conquest of England, the family settled in Cornwall, and then a branch moved on to Kilkenny with Strongbow, a powerful Norman prince. Following a siege, Kilkenny was surrendered to Cromwell by an Archidiekne, who was a member of the ruling city council at the time. The Normans were originally of Viking origin as, having conquered northern France, the area was changed to Normandy (Northmen).

This information given by Thomas Coady, originally of Parknakyle, Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow, Ireland, Kilkenny, and now Dublin.

Small world, but I believe i have some further details for this family. My grandfather, Thomas Coady, was the son of John and Margaret Coady. Born in Parknakyle, Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow. I actually have afamily picture, without my grandfather, of the remaining family. He was a soldier in WWI, but we were unaware of service in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He had 4 children, Jane, John, Edward and Thomas.

I have never been able to find information on Mike and Frank.

The two sisters, Anastasia (Sister Laserian) and Rosalie both came to America and then entered the convent in Peoria, Illinois. Sister Laserian entered the religious teaching community upon arrival in the states in 1913 and fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a nurse in 1975 and was most happy to assist people with their medical concerns.

John Coady
New York

A Mrs. Mabel (Coady) Harris, married William Colwell in 1915, Ionia County, MI. She was b. 1864 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, daughter of Peter Coady and Christina McDonald, according to her marriage record.

She had been previously married to a Mr. Harris, probably George Washington Harris, resident of Gowen, MI, who died in Montcalm, Montcalm Co. MI in 1912. (The informant at the time of death was Mrs. Mable Harris of Gowen, Montcalm, MI.)

Mabel (Coady) and Wm Colwell moved to Sacremento Co. CA where Wm died in 1933. I do not know what became of Mabel after that. To my knowledge, she had no children by either marriage, but may have cared for two of William grandchildren in CA for some years.

Any information about her last years and death/burial place would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Jim,

I too assume they came from Ireland, but I have no idea if there's a connection. My great-grandmother's grandfather was a William Coady, I believe, who was a sea captain. Do you know the occupation of the William Coady you found in the 1841 PEI census? Hope there is a connection somewhere!

Jim Condon
Colchester, Vermont

Hi Jim,

My Coadys (Codys) arrived in Prince Edward Island in the 1830s from Kilkenny, Ireland. John, John Jr., William and my great-great-grandfather Laurence (b. 1815) are all residing in different houses in Lot 57 in the 1841 census of PEI. Laurence Cody married Ann Clanse (Clancy, Clansey), who is listed as being from "the British Colonies", which I understand means Newfoundland. I have always suspected that my Coadys came from Ireland to PEI, with a stop in Newfoundland. Do any of these names fit with your family?

Thanks,
Jim Coady

Dear Paul,

No idea if there's a connection here somewhere, but thought I'd touch base. My great-grandmother was Rosella Coady, b. 1859 in Halifax to Thomas and Theresa (Berrigan) Coady. Her parents were both natives of Newfoundland. Theresa was the daughter of John Berrigan, a tailor on Water Street in St. John's. Her sister, Mary Ann, was married to a William Coady (I assume William and Thomas were brothers, but I don't know that for a fact). Theresa also had a brother, Patrick, who took over the tailor's shop (a building later owned by a Patrick Coady---the two families were pretty closely intertwined, I'd guess).

Thomas Coady (Rosella's father) was the son, I think, of a William Coady who was a sea captain.

Rosella married Capt. Angus Macdonald and she died at sea in 1883. Capt. Macdonald married twice more. He's not only my great-grandfather, he's also the grandfather (by second wife Minnie McDermott) of former Canadian defense, labor and energy minister Donald Macdonald. If any of this rings a bell, please let me know!

Jim Condon

Dear Andy,

I'm looking for any information about Rosella Coady, my g-grandmother. She was born in Halifax (I believe) in 1859 and died at sea in 1883. She was married to Capt. Angus Macdonald and when not at sea they lived in St. John, NB. Her obit listed her mother as "Mrs T. Cody of Halifax." Usually her name showed up as "Coady," not "Cody," but we're just not sure. Any help appreciated!

To Bill,

Cuddy may be a derivation of Cuddihy which is a derivation of Coady or Archdeacon. Your branch of the family may have been originally from the Kilkenny area and possibly, because their lands were seized during the Cromwellian invasion and plantation, were banished to Connaught (the western region of Ireland).

If you research into Irish family names under Cuddihy and Cuddy you may discover the answer.

Good luck with your quest.

Regards,
Thomas Coady

Hi Kate,

The closest I can come is a Michael Cody in the 1841 census living in Lot 48 just outside of Charlottetown. He was married to Alice Brien (O'Brien) and had a son Michael born 30 Dec 1835 and baptised in Charlottetown 19 Jan 1836. This could be the family, as the closest Catholic church was probably in Charlottetown.

Jim

Looking for Coady (Cody) and Crosby descendants from Halifax, NS

Hi,

I'm searching for descendants of Adam Brown Crosby, former Mayor of Halifax, NS in the hopes of finding more information about his wife's family. I suspect one of his sisters-in-law was my g-grandmother, Rosella Cody (or Coady) but not sure at all.

I'm also searching for any descendants of Capt. Thomas and Theresa Cody.

Rosella Cody was born in Halifax in 1859 and was married to Captain Angus Macdonald. She died at sea in 1883. This is from the Halifax Chronicle in Oct. 1883:

"A letter received here from Montevideo, from Capt. A.B. McDONALD of ship "Nicosia" of St. John contains the sad intelligence of the death of his wife, Rosella McDONALD on 19th July last and that she was buried at sea. The ship was then on passage from Cardiff to Montevideo. The deceased had two children on board, the youngest being about 9 mos. old. Mrs. McDonald was a native of Halifax, N.S. and a d/o Mrs. T. CODY. She resided in Saint John for some years."

One of the children on board was my grandfather, Capt. John Macdonald. In trying to track down "Mrs. T. Cody" I have only found one likely candidate in Halifax, a Theresa Cody who was mother-in-law to A.B. Crosby.

A.B. Crosby (b. 1859 in Belfast, Ireland; d. 1921 in Ottawa) married Marie F. "Minnie" or "Mamie" Cody of Halifax, NS on Jan. 15, 1885 in Newfoundland. Crosby served as mayor, MP and a member of the Canadian Senate. Minnie's parents were Capt. Thomas Cody and Theresa Cody (I think Theresa'a maiden name was Berrigan and that she and her husband were both born in Newfoundland but moved to Halifax at some point).

Recently, I received a copy of the death notice of Theresa Cody from the Jan. 30, 1898 Halifax Chrinicle Herald:

"The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mrs. Theresa Cody, proprietress of the Oxford House, at the corner of Hurd's Lane and Lockman Street. Mrs. Cody had attended the 11 o'clock mass at St.Mary's cathedral and was on her way home. On Barrington street, opposite the parade, she felt ill, and knocking at the door of James. M. Godfrey, asked to go in and rest for a few minutes, hoping that soon she would be able to proceed. But she became worse, and a moment or two after being seated fell over to the floor. Dr. Finn was called, but could do nothing and in less than an hour after entering the house she was dead.

The relatives will have sincere sympathy in this bereavement. A.B. Crosby is a son-in-law of the deceased. There is another married daughter in this city, and a son resides in the United States."

There was no mention in the death notice of any family members who had predeceased Theresa Cody, so I'm wondering if there are any Cody, Coady or Crosby descendants out there who may have more information. Thank you!

Jim Condon
Colchester, VT

Hi Mark,

I just happened across the following on the PEI Baptismal site:

Child's Name Birth Baptism Mother's Name Father's Name
Cody, Edward 8 Mar 1835 29 Mar 1835 Susan Panell Tobias Cody
Cody, Elin 7 Dec 1850 Susan Penal Tobias Cody
Cody, Martha 16 Jun 1833 Susan Pensal Tobias Cody
Cody, Mary 17 Jul 1831 5 Sep 1831 Susan Pannell Tobias Cody
Cody, Susan 19 Jan 1840 Susan Ponnel Tobias Cody
Cody, Tobias 8 July 184?

I have a RICHARD COADY and wife CATHERINE MOORE of Ireland.

Children of RICHARD COADY and CATHERINE MOORE are:
MICHAEL COADY, b. 1808, Ireland; d. 1873, Ontario, Canada.
Other siblings known are JOHN COADY, PATRICK COADY, and MARY COADY.

MICHAEL COADY (my ggg grandfather) came to N. America prior to the birth / christening of a son THOMAS COADY, b. September 16, 1842, Syracuse, N.Y. USA. The christening document names the witnesses as Thomas Coady (possibly a brother to Michael) and Bridget Hoolihan. Michael and Catherine made there home in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. I am trying to find ships records and their home town in Ireland. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Fred Coady

I have traced a number of Coady's , however not sure of the linkage other than the fact that many first born boys were named after their Father. I have Richard Coady,
Ballycrony,Glenmore,co Kilkenny,b about 1835-40 married a Catherine Holden with daughter Mary b.08/04/1860
Also Richard Coady b about 1840-45 married Mary(Maria) Dunphy , Oldcourt,Inistogue,Co Kilkenny with daughter Mary b 24/06/1865

Hey Dan,

I have not found the name Flanagan in my family tree. I cannot account for about half of my g-g-grandfather's siblings, so I am not sure if any moved to Quebec.

Jim

Hi Janice, yes, I've been looking at your posts and it seems likely that there is a connection with Patzy's and your rellies but without all my papers I can't put my finger on the common denominator. I am based in Dublin next to the National Archives, so I need to pull my finger out and get cracking again! If I can verify anything for you via the National Archives or any of the resources in Dublin, feel free to contact me offlist. I am often in Tipperary so I'll keep in touch if I find anything interesting. I'm hoping to nail some of the Parish records in Fethard this summer as I think there's a lot there not properly searched although I did trawl them once. Don't worry about the Cody/Coady spelling. Nine times out of ten this was due to the fact that the people who registered the birth couldn't read/write well or at all and the spelling was done according to how the Parish Priest recorded it in the Parish records. In my family history I have found both variations. Cheers Philippa

Jim:

My name is Dan Flanagan and I reside here in Austin, TX.

My Flanagan family moved to New Brunswick between 1823 and 1826, lived there until 1830, at which time they moved to Stoneham, north of Quebec City. One of these kids, Bridget Flanagan, married a Coady.

So . . . do you have any Flanagans in your family tree or did any of your Coadys move to near Quebec City?

Thanks in advance,
Dan
