i am re-searching for an elderly neighbour the surname Rudderham in the Norwich UK area. In the course of my research I have connected Rudderham with Coans and Matthews Families.
My ancestor is James Cowen/Cohen b 1815 who married Elizabeth Walker b 1814 in Union County, SC c 1836. They moved to Barbour County, Alabama c 1843 with her sisters and their husbands.
The surname is pronounced Co-wen and the spelling Cohen/Coan/Coin.
The only record for James is the 1850 Census which states he was born in MA. Which I believe should be Union County, SC. I think he's a son of Thomas Cohen b in Union County 1786 d Union County, SC

We have been unable to establish any links between the Pennsylvania-nee Ohio-nee Indiana-nee Illinois COANs/COONs (descendents of John D. Coon of Fayette Co, PA) and the southern Coans in Alabama and South Carolina. The southerners are believed to be relatives of the Connecticut Coans, covered in Ruth Coan Fulton's book, "Coan Genealogy 1697-1982". One problem is that the PA/OH/IN/IL Coans were actually COONs until the 1850 census.

Curious if you've found any more info about Alonzo or James. I visited the grave of James W. and Minerva Coan in 2000. Seems like I remember there being additional Coans there in the cemetery. Can't recall the town name, and don't have my notes handy right now, but it wasn't Marion, the county seat of Grant Co.

He was very successful judging by the grave stone size. And that also makes him easy to track...he's featured in at least one county history, with a picture of his big farm. I even located his farm but the old brick farmhouse he built had just recently been torn down and replaced with a piece of junk "modern" house. I also found James' father's (John D. COAN/COON) grave. Took a picture, but no rubbing.

I am going to get back into tracing the line soon in preparation for the 150th anniversary of the Siege of Vicksburg, which James' nephew, Henry D. (my great-grandfather) fought in.

I just need to get it organized and burned to CDs. I'll put a note in my files to send you a notice when I get it done. But if I don't remind me again next summer. :)

Hi Clara! Sounds like we are cousins, 2nd maybe?

I've been searching for where Sullivan was born and who his parents were. I found it was in Davies Indiana and they lived in Patoka Indiana. It seems like I keep hitting blank walls where this is concerned. I tried looking up Coan in Indiana and there are a lot of them, maybe the same clan? I don't have much on the family except what I put in my first note. I know Sullivan went to college (my daughter found that little bit of information.

I had found Hugh F. Coan and Mary L. Patton and was able to do some tracing on Mary. But my Coan information stops with Hugh. I am not even sure when he died or where he is buried. I also do not have his father or information on his ancestors.

Any help you can be would be very appreciated. What information I have is in my family list: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9061951/person/-846956197

The pictures I have were from my mother's collection and the pictures of Alaska were from the internet. Feel free to link in and collect information you need.

Hugs!
Hello,

I am looking for any information on Mary Coan (my GGG grandmother), b. abt. 1813 in Maine (probably near Bangor). She married Warren McPheters, and they lived in Lowell, Penobscot Cty, Maine most of their lives. I can find nothing on Mary's parents. I note that she lived very near a Wm. Cone, b. 1788 according to the 1870 census.

Anything on her would be of great interest!

Cheers, Dave Drabold

Re: thomas jefferson coan

I am a descendant of Thomas Jefferson Coan's brother, James P. W. Coan AND Minnie Lou Rodgers Coan's sister, Nancy Elizabeth "Pert" Rodgers. So, we are double kin. I would love to have a copy of the family record in the old Bible if it is convenient for you. glover at gloverfarms dot com (Hopefully writing it that way will not add me to any more spam lists.)

Most of our family's Coan/Rodgers pictures and records were destroyed when they were stored in a cellar that flooded. I like to gather all I can from my ancestors' siblings.

I went to Mattie's house in the early 1980s. She was so sweet and nice to me. In fact, she tried to give me some old pictures that were in her garage (may have been a storage room). They were the big old family drawing type photos of Thomas Jefferson and his wife and another of Minnie's parents. Of course, since I am also a descendant of Minnie's parents, I was excited to copy it. I also copied a picture of TJ and Minnie as an older couple and a picure of Mattie when she was a little girl, probably about 18 months old. My grandfather said she was one of his favorite cousins.

During that period of time I was copying all the old pictures I could find with my camera and special lenses. Today, of course I scan photos.

I have always hoped that someone in the family got the large pictures who valued them and that the next person she offered them to didn't just take them. If someone has a professionally done copy of those, I would gladly pay for copies or any other family photos. I don't even have any good photos of my ancestors James PW and Eliza Jane (Rodgers) Coan. If someone wants copies of the copies that I have, please just tell me where to send them.

Since I live near DeLeon, I have taken photos of all the gravestones in that cemetary of my relatives--300 in all. I'll gladly share if you tell me which ones you want.

Weatherwax/ Coan marriage NY

Spent the morning at the NYSL Genealogy section reviewing the Coan family Genealogy pages 392/393 ; it clearly indicate the Sylvanus Coan by his third wife Polly Hough had a son named: Sylvanus Hugh Coan b: July 2,1819 in Parish Oswego co NY. Page 418 of the same Genealogy Volume 1 not the supplement indicates that Sylvanus H. Coan married a Catherine (unknown maiden name) It also indicates he died Aug 25,1876.
In doing my Weatherwax family research I found a Catherine S. COAN (nee WEatherwax) who died in Michigan in 1903. The will of her mother who died in NY indicates Catherine married a Mr. Coan.
Her parents are positively identifed in the death record and wills. So a search of both Michigan and NY US Census records was begun. The only Catherine COAN using many spelling variations to be found is the wife of Sylvanus in Parish,Oswego co NY. After her husbands death in 1876 the USC for 1880 stills shows Catherine living in Parish with her daughter Marcia (Priscilla) married to Thaddius Kellogg. This couple later appear having moved to Indiana.
The coan Genealogy on pg 418 lists sons Augustus and Orlando as separate people, but Florida death records
show a Orlando A. Coan b: 19 Sep 1849 NY died 6 Apr 1937 in Sulfer Springs Hillsborough co FL. His father is identified as Sylvester Coan of NY. An Orlando COAN also appears in USC1880 pg.38C in Syracus,Onondaga co NY w/wife Lucinda and 2 children.
Marica COAN/Kellogg was the 2nd of four wives of Taddius Kellogg they were newly married in USC1880 and her husband remarried on 4 Jan 1886 in Tippecanoe co IN. to a Hattie Sherwood. There is no evidence of issue for this Marcia COAN
In written correspondene Catherine S. Weatherwax/COAN replies to a query from the Surrogate court judge in NY that she is living on a homestead in Grand Traverse co MI, this is shortly after the death of her husband so I suspect she was with either daughter Ellen or Marica since she is widowed, then it appears by USC1880 they are back on the Parish NY location for the census.
The COAN Genealogy indicates a WILL for Sylvanus or his wife Catherine which identfied daughter known as Priscilla is Marcia.
At this point I am only showing this as a tentative Weatherwax/Coan marriage for this couple. Obviously more proof is required , but the evidence cited is an indication of a possible union. If anyone else has any info I would certainly appreciate sharing data and documents with you.
Wayne E. Weatherwax
following David b:1747

Sullivan Coan

I am still searching for more information on Sullivan Coan. Here's what I have so far.

He was listed in the 1930 census in Washington Co. South Dakota, Township 40. He and his wife were listed on lines 15 and 16 of that census page.

There is a mistake in the transcription of the page, they have it listed as Clullave Coan and that he is Indian. He is NOT Indian, he is listed as white and the transcription is wrong. He was a white teacher employed by Indian Services on a reservation. His wife, Coy, is listed as a homemaker. That census says he and both his parents were born in Indiana.

I have family stories but no documentation: he and Coy adopted Jeanne Louise Musgrove when she was 4. Jeanne was the daughter of Coy's sister, Mona, who died. The Coans were both teachers, taught mostly on reservations, taught in Alaska for awhile, and ended up in Iowa. They were in Graetenger by the time I was born in 1957. I do remember meeting Sullivan before he died, sometime in the 1960's. My mother, who is Jeanne, says that Sullivan had a brother named Bob or Robert.

Any help would be appreciated.
