Coates family Yorkshire 1700s to 1900s

I'm looking at/for descendents of Robert COATES (b Terrington 1749 - d Terrington 1779 son of Robert COATES b 1717 Barton le Street - d 1802 Terrington and his wife Catherine WREA b 1719 Wintringham – d 1798 Ganthorpe/Terrington). The younger Robert married Jane COATES (1748 Barton le Street daughter of John COATES), who may have been his cousin. Many members of the family were stonemasons, others bricklayers, etc. They seem to have moved more or less en masse to Falgrave/Scarborough. I have several lines coming down to the mid-20th century, but am keen to pursue other lines and go back further if possible. I'm more than happy to share what I have in return.

My 4th great-grandfather Jonathan Waltham (c1781-1852) married my 4th great-grandmother Sarah Coates (1790-1873) in North Newbald, Yorkshire, England on 25 Jul 1812. I found their marriage in the parish records.

They immigrated to the United States in 1832, but I am still searching for exactly when, where, and how. Did they come in thru Canada or directly here on a ship? They settled in St. Joseph County, Michigan.

I don't know the parents or siblings of either my Jonathan Waltham or my Sarah Coates. Do any of you know anything about these two folks, such as who their parents or siblings were?

Thank You in advance for your time on my behalf.

BJ Heard

Coates / Coats families of Ontario, Canada 1800's - Toronto to London areas.

I have a Coates / Coats branch in my family tree. I believe they were Crown Loyalists who left the newly formed U.S.A. in the early 1800's, and re-settled in Ontario.
I am looking for anybody with information on family members from the area between London and Toronto. My Coates ancestors had been soldiers/militia members in the American Colonies.
There was a Zebulon Coates who was in Niagara Co., New York by 1824, when it was still a wilderness area. His son Cyrus was born about 1790, likely in Niagara County.
I believe Cyrus was the father of my gr gr Grandfather Phillip Coates who was born 1842, probably in Ontario.
I have located the family on the 1851 census in Windham Twp, Norfolk Co., Ontario.
Cyrus died in 1853 and is buried in Windham, which is between Brantford and the Long Point area. His wife Phoebe appeared in the 1861 and 1871 Windham census', living with her unmarried son Daniel.
Another son of Cyrus and Phoebe, Timothy married Charity and they raised a large family in Windham. Their family used the spelling 'Coats'. Timothy died in Windham in 1900 and is buried there. Charity died in 1922 and is also buried in Windham. Timothy and Charity's children were: Preston, Wellington, Timothy, Hezakiah, and Ruby. The children were born from 1857 to 1871.
1)Preston Coats (b. abt 1857) married Mary Elizabeth Temple and had children, Martha, Tabitha, and Frederick Lorne Coates. This family remained in Norfolk Co. through 1887 at least, at which time, I lose track of them.
2)Wellington Coats (b. 1861) married Mary Edith Chrysler. Their children were Samuel and Gertrude. Wellington raised his family on the same farm that his parents raised him in Windham. He eventually sold the land to the Windham Plantation Company in 1929. Wellington died in 1936 and is buried in nearby Vanessa, Ontario.
3)Timothy Coats Jr. remained single, I think.
4) Hezekiah Coats (b. abt. 1868) married Bertha Morgan. They had a son Roy b. in Windham in 1897, but I do not know anything more about this family.
5)Ruby Coats married Levi Hunt and they appeared in the 1901 Windham census with adoped children Martha and Timothy. I'm assuming the children took the last name Hunt.
I would like very much to meet any descendants of the family of Timothy and Charity Coats, or anybody who can teach me more about them.
It was Timothy's brother Phillip who was my great Grandfather. Phillip married Isabella Fuller, likely near Sarnia where they raised a large family before moving to Michigan, U.S.A. in 1899. I have quite a bit of information about that branch of the family.
I have reached a road block regarding the other children of Cyrus (b. abt 1790) and Phoebe Coats. The writing on the census records is not very clear, but I believe they had children named Daniel, David, Timothy, Justus, Dennis?, Benjamin?, Phillip, and Phebe/Mary. I am seeking anybody that is researching Coates / Coats family members in southern Ontario, who may have a connection to this family.
Coates family of NY, Ontario, Michigan

We have a Phillip Coates/Coats b. about 1842 to (we believe) Cyrus and Phoebe (Smith) Coates. Phillip was b. in Ontario and lived as an adult in Lambton Co. Not sure which part of Ontario he was born in. Cannot find the family on census records prior to 1871. Any help would be appreciated. I may have found a Cyrus Coates in Niagara Co. NY about 1820. Connection not known. In 1899, Phillip and his family moved to Antrim Co. MI, where he died in 1909. Any information about this family would be appreciated.

COATES: Penninah Ellen ,b 1881. Gloucestershire

Penninah Ellen Gertrude COATES (married 1908 Percy SLEDGE from Leeds). Born Kings Stanley. Gloucestershire.
Her mother was also called Penninah (maiden name KING).As it's quite an unusual name, I wondered if she is in anyone else's family tree.
Her siblings were Emily Fanny, Fanny Emily, Harry Mark, Alfred James, Annie Eliza(? looks like Amelia in 1881 census, but clearly is Annie in 1871), Florence, and Albert Edward.
Penninah's brother, Harry (married Emily DAVIES from Stretton, Herefordshire) was my grandmother's father. She was Dorothy Kate ( K not H as it has been transcribed ). Born Treforest, Glamorganshire. The unmarried mother of my mother (Lucy Freda,1918-1974).

New to this, but it's good to fill in my background as I only knew my grandmother (Dorothy Kate) and Penninah.("Aunt Nell")
Benjamin Coates, Jane Reilly, Charlotte Coates, Samuel Henry Coates, Elizabeth Cavanagh, William Cavanagh

I am seeking assistance from possible relatives of Benjamin Coates, born abt 1847, England, died 3/8/1936, Dunedin, New Zealand. Benjamin Coates is my great grandfather on my mother's side of the family.

Benjamin Coates arrived in New Zealand with his (I believe wife) Jane Reilly (born about 1848, Liverpool, UK). They arrived on the passenger ship 'Peter Denny' in Port Chalmers, Dunedin NZ in 1874. They arrived with a six year old daughter, Elizabeth Coates.

Jane Reilly appears in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records in the UK. Her mother was Elizabeth Cavanagh (born about 1820 Ireland and her father was William Cavanagh born about 1819 in Ireland). In the 1861 census it shows Elizabeth Cavanagh as a widow. Jane is aged 12 and was born in Liverpool. In the 1871 census it shows Elizabeth Cavanagh as being born in Dublin, Ireland and daughter Jane Reilly (widow) born in Liverpool. Granddaughter Elizabeth is aged 3. It is apparent Jane has become a widow and she has retained her married name. I can't find any marriage records to suggest she (Jane Cavanagh) married a Reilly.

I cannot seem to locate any corresponding marriage records that shows either Jane Reilly (Rielly, Riley) married a Benjamin Coates sometime between the census of 1871 and before they departed for New Zealand 1874. None of the records from New Zealand (from the Dunedin Library) indicate who Benjamin's parents may have been. The only record that could relate would be a marriage record showing a Benjamin Coates married a Jane Riley in Apr-June quarter in 1870 at Mile End, London. I have not ordered this record as yet, however I can't see how or why Jane would have recorded her surname as Reilly in the 1871 census if she was married in 1870. That doesn't make any sense.

I believe the only likely Benjamin Coates that lived in England, born abt 1847 who disappeared from UK records after the 1861 census was the son of Samuel Henry Coates (Henry Coates) and Charlotte Coates. Both Samuel and Charlotte had 7 children, William, Ann, Benjamin, John, Henry, Elizabeth and Charlotte. Samuel in the 1851 census was born in Syresham and was a carpenter. His wife Charlotte was born in Northhampton, Weedon. A number of the children appear to have been born in either Everdon, Birmingham, Smithwick, and Camden Town. Benjamin appears on the 1851 census as 'B Coates' and in the 1861 census aged 13 as Benjamin Coates, however he is not on the 1871 census. He obviously left home by this stage. The number of Benjamin Coates' born abt 1847/1848 is very, very, limited. It is most likely the same one, however I can't confirm this.

I have obtained the birth certificate of one Benjamin Coates, born Lutterworth, Counties of Leicester, Warwick and Northhampton in November 1847. He is the son of Henry and Charlotte Coates nee West. The father is a carpenter. The Benjamin who went to New Zealand ended up becoming a brick layer as did one of his sons.

I am unable to bridge the gap to definitely ascertain that the Benjamin Coates, born abt 1847/1848 in England and who married Jane Reilly (nee Cavanagh) born about 1848 in Liverpool and who travelled to New Zealand in 1874 is the same as the son of Henry (Samuel Henry) Coates and Charlotte Coates (nee West).

If there is anyone out there that could possibly assist I would be eternally grateful.

I have run out of ideas as to how to bridge this gap, and without any relevant marriage records to determine who Benjamin's parents are/were that gap will remain. Perhaps Benjamin and Jane never married, perhaps they were married at sea, however this search is proving extremely difficult.

Hoping someone can assist.

Regards

Michael Langlois

Coates from Durham/Yorkshire

Can anyone help me find out more about Annie Coates b.1835
Heighton, Durham. I am not sure if that is her married name(if she ever married) but she appears to have had a daughter
Jane Elizabeth b.1859 in Sunderland. I have come across
a christening on the 20 March 1859 in Saint Maurice, York
listing only mother as Annie. Info on 1910 census lists both
as widows.
I know that Jane appeared to have had a son Paul Shepler
b.1876 in California - not sure if she ever married a Shepler as unable to find marriage listed. She then marries
a Paul Sharp Brabant (b.1850) in 1883.

Found the story of Zella Faulk, murdered in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1917

Found the story of Zella Faulk, murdered in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1917

She was 20 yr. old and found close to West Oakwood Cemetery. They caught Rufus Coates and found him guilty of this crime. He was hanged a little over a year after this happened. She was buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. She was survived by her mother, Mrs. M. Faulk, 3 sisters, Mrs. J. W. True, Mrs. L. w. Epperson and Mrs. J. L. Key, 1 brother, Ruby Faulkner ( this is how the paper speled his last name, I think it is a misprint since the rest were spelled Faulk)
He was buried in Azle cemetery. His father was T. W. Coates

Thomas Coates born Yorkshire 1790's, died Co Durham 1840's

Hi,

Thomas Coates is the father of my great-great grandmother, Agnes Fryer (nee Coates), born in Angrun or Muker, Yorkshire c1835.

Thomas was also born in the same village in the late 1790's or early 1880's and married either Anne or Mary.

I understand the family moved to South Church, Co Durham prior to 1841 and that Thomas died there in the late 1840's. Trouble is, I've found three death records that could be for Thomas in the Auckland district, Co Durham in 1847 & 1848.

I have a copy of Agnes Coates marriage certificate from 1860 and Thomas Coates is recorded as deceased (formerly a Pitman).

If anyone has information about my Thomas Coates or can eliminate one or more of the death records, I'd be most appreciative.

Cheers,

Cheryl

Pingstone/Coates connection

My gggrandfather Frederick Pingstone b. abt 1828 was somehow associated with the Coates family according to family lore. He married Mary Caplis b. abt 1831 from Dublin, Ireland, and incurred the wrath of his family. Supposedly he signed off on his portion of the family fortune and was given a cash settlement to immigrate to Canada which he did abt 1871. I cannot find his parentage and would appreciate any help in that regard.
