My grandmother was Cora Lou Coats, her father was Thomas Benton Coats, she had 2 younger sisters named Dora and Ora. Her mother's name is unknown, I am still trying to find her. She died giving birth to Ora when grandma was around 7 yrs old. Grandma could trace her father's line back past Rook but knew nothing of her mother. She said she had 6 older step brothers from another mother but no full brothers.

I have some pictures (John and Sally Coats, a letter from Sally, and other documents and pictures. You mentioned in one of your posts that you had a picture of a reunion. I would be really interested in that picture. My home email is rrick000@sympatico.ca if you are interested. We may be distant cousins somehow.
Hope to hear from you.
Rick

I've been able to track my family back to their arrival in American in the 1640s. The first ones I found were in upstate New York. No sign of any Indian ancestors, despite the family stories. The Coates name with the "e" on the end (and family) hails from England. Maybe there's a connection but not through native Americans. if you like, I'll invite you to view my family tree.

Regards, Nancy

The Coats Families of Westmoreland and Richmond County, Virginia

I am trying to find out the parentage of my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, James Coats. He was born in Westmoreland County, VA about 1795. As a young man, he moved to Baltimore, married Catherine Kline and had at least two children, Aray Elizabeth (called Anne) and James A. Coats. He died about 1831. We have been unable to connect him to a Coats line in the Northern Neck counties. There are several Coats families in these counties--very old families. In the 1820 Census, there are THREE men named James Coats in Richmond County! Can anyone help me make a connection? Thank you. M. Lewis

I do not think this is what I am looking for but it might help my mental thoughts. My grandmother was told by her father that her mother was Cherokee and had ran off and gone back to her people.

Hi Becky,
Well, I don't seem to be getting anywhere. Looking in familysearch.org, I found a Silas D. Coats married to a "Mary" in Yreka, Siskiyou, California. But, if the records are anywhere near correct, he was born in New York about 1828 which is about the right time frame, but doesn't match up with any of my relations that I can tell.

What information do you have to connect my Isaac Coats of Randolph County, Indiana? He had a son, Silas, and so far only found one son, Simon, born around 1860 (same as your Timothy). Silas and family ended up in Kansas. I still can't connect to California. If you can give me any information why you think Isaac is related, that may help.

I think you are 3 hours behind me? I am certainly open to you calling sometime if you want to compare notes and thoughts. My cell is 513.227.4719. Most evenings are good for me. Email correspondence is fine too.

While I was searching some Coats, I ran across another who was killed at the battle of Bataan, Philippines. I had a great uncle killed there and just learned of another distant relative killed same time at Bataan. Two related Coats killed in same battle. by the way, my grandfather, Levi Coates put the "E" in our name, i believe.

Look forward to additional correspondence.

Have a great Sunday.

Doug

Dear Doug,
Aha! I know what the miscommunication is! I sent you information on my grandfather, Silas Warren Coats. His father was Silas Timothy Coats, and his father was Silas Dunham Coats. I did not go back far enough! I think you have information that is totally new to me. My grandmother was Mildred Irene O'Brien, married to Silas "Warren". Your "Silas" (seems that Silas was a VERY popular name)would be his great grandfather! I only have Isaac's name and birth place, Darke Ohio, and death place, Wayne, Indiana, and no other information that precedes that. I have been looking but no one in the family seems to have any other information so if you have anything that speaks to when this branch of our family came to the States and where in Scotland they came from, I would be very grateful if you shared it! As for me, I was born in Weaverville, CA, in the USA. Dad and Grandpa were lumberjacks and grama was a timbercamp cook. We moved to Washington State when I was 6 weeks old, family tradition has it that I was transported in an apple box :) Mom and dad separated and divorced after a few years but I have two brothers, Tim and Steven. I married a Canadian in 2000 and live here with our three children in Alberta, while my mom and two brothers still live in Washington state. Grandpa died of colon cancer when I was very young, so my memories of him are just stills and little vignettes where he is featured. However, I am told that the genotype of the Coats men in that line was very strong: stubborn, long and lean, hard to get to know but eternally loyal. I hope this has been helpful and that we can continue to help each other out!

Thank you,
Becky Bonde

Becky, how great to know your name! I think I need to fill in some blanks too, however. I had a completely different spouse for Silas, two actually. 1. Mary Whitesel 2. Tabitha something. Could be bad info on my part. I am confident however that my ancestor, Isaac Coats, my 4th great-grandfather was a brother of your Silas Coats. Once i place you in my software, it will tell me how we are related! My email is dcoates2@gmail.com if you wish to email directly. I have met wonderful (relations) over the years and talked to some on the phone. I have a marvelous photo of a Coats reunion dated approximately 1915 with about 75 people in attendance. i sent it to a guy in Indiana who showed it to his grandmother. She exclaimed that she was one of the babies on the lap of her mother!! She filled in some gaps as well. So, look over the attached and get back to me with questions and fill in my holes. If you want to talk sometime, that would be great too!

Take care,

Doug - PS what part of the country are you located? I'm in Ohio. The file I wanted to send is too big apparently. I'll have to work on a gedcom file to send.

Isaac's father:
John Coats, b. 1/20/1788 d. 9/19/1878 Randolph Cty, Indiana
mother: Sarah Wright b. 9/20/1789 d. 7/11/1875 Randolph Cty. Indiana. I want to be sure we are talking the same Isaac and Silas. Gets confusing after awhile. My Isaac was married to Marenda Rawson. More later......look forward to hearing from you.
That is awesome! I do believe we are very distant cousins :) Silas married twice; The first time is a deep dark family secret, though I know he did have 1 son, named after him, with the first wife. The second wife, my grandmother, was Mildred Irene O'Brien. They had three children: Barbara Jean, Richard Lee, and Jimmy(unknown) Jimmy died in a car accident when he was in his early teens. Barbara married Donald Hendershot and they had 5 children. Jimmy (James), Jeff, Donald Jr, Carol and David (twins). Jimmy has passed away from cancer, as has Uncle Don . Don Jr and Carol and Jimmy all had children, I can send details on them later. Richard married my mom, Sandra Sue Cofmann. They had three kids: Rebecca (me), Timothy, and Steven. Tim and I both have kids, again, if you want the details, I would be happy to send them along. I would love a file with some of the information I need to fill in the blanks! Thanks for your reply and I look forward to hearing from you again.
Becky

Good afternoon,

It has been awhile since I've been able to research, but you and I must be related. Isaac Coats is my 4th great-grandfather. His son, John R. Coats (Silas' brother) is my direct descendant.

Isaac parents were John Coats m to Sally (Sarah) Wright. John was born in 1788 in Newberry County, SC and died in 1878 in Randolph Cty, Indiana.

I can put together a GED file and send along with as much as I know. I don't have any children listed for Silas if you can provide some.

Thanks! Let me know what more I can answer.

Doug Coates
Hamilton, Ohio

Srygley and daughter of Benjamin Coats of New England and Annie Delaney. I am pretty sure William Coats (my ancestor) is her brother based on family tradition and also I think there were some names in common on both lines. I am trying to trace this back further.

I actually found that Sallie or Sarah W. Reeder was married to John Henry Stout in 1879 in TN. In one census their name last name was spelled Stant. He was born in TN 1858 and she was born in Lauderdale Ala. in 1859. I followed John H and Sallie W down to my father John Smith Stout of Decatur Tn. His parents were James Wylie and Bess Smith Stout. Trying to find if I have any relatives to connect with. James W second wife was Edna Merle Snow. She and I got to know each other by phone. I was sorry when she passed. My father died Aug. 17, 2005.
My email is carolann0405@hotmail.com
To Nancy and Michelle, I just ran across this thread, and although I'm a little late... I wanted to introduce myself. I too am descendent of this line. Maggie Alabama "Bama" Coats is my GGrandmother, daughter of Felix Kenady Coats and Dora Belle McAfee. She married Ira Fletcher Henry in 1909 in Colbert Co., Al. I have been to the Rock Creek Cemetery several times, but never saw an Eliza or any other Coats headstones there. I am also interested in any listings from the Rock Creek Church you may have. I recently went to a Henry Family Reunion where they told me the reunions used to be held at the church. How I wish they still were! The Henry Family was also a large group in Colbert and had a fair hand in the Reformation Movement in Tuscumbia. Anyway, I wanted to let you know there are other "kin" out here with interest in this family. I have a photo of Bama and Ira that I recently received if either of you would like a copy for your records. You can email me @ wakachica@gmail.com.

Warm Regards and hoping to hear from you,

Charlotte Graes

I am Wm E Coats & a descendant of Uriah through his son Freeman, Marvin J., Alfred Freeman, Sr., Alfred Freeman, Jr., Wm E (me). We refer to Uriah as the "mystery" father because we have really run into walls trying to find out more about his roots. We did substantiate that he was b. in Williamsburg, MA., migrated west to Canaan & Otsego, NY (it appears for a brief time) then onto Phelps, NY. He died in Marbletown, NY. We are still trying to confirm that he was the father of our Freeman.

It appears that much of the family moved on further west to OH & MI.

Looking for any possible clues as to where the Coats/Coates family migrated from? Uriah's parents? We have also seen both Tabitha Curtis & Tabitha Faunce as his wife's name...any leads there?

Just a reminder, that if someone has an ancestor listed in their family, doesn't make it accurate. Always check their sources and see if you come to the same conclusion. Bowling Green, Aerial, and Rueben C Coats, do not belong to Almon and Nancy Coats from NY. There is also an Almon Coats from Kentucky. Seems someone got mixed up on their states and everybody else just copied them. Just a reminder!
