Churchill Cobb was convicted of fraud and larceny, trying to pass false bank drafts, in September 1822. He escaped from custody and was on the run until his brother applied for a pardon. The pardon was granted in January 1827.
It also possibly explains why his wife, Pamelia Putnam may have left him, abandoned and close to destitute as she was. The records of the town of Rumford show his son Barzilla being indentured at a young age to local townspeople during this time period.
