Hi
My grandfather Robert William Cobbe b.1979 Kilkenny D. 1968 Dublin (rest of family/parents Athy).
I have an old text book of his with an entry Henry G Chaloner died January 1965 entered under Sept 16 (possibly his bday).
The story is that there was some connection with Charles Cobbe -Newbridge Hse but I have never been aqble to trace it. You state you have links re Cobbe Chaloner etc. I know it is a long shot but is the above Chaloner in your data or are you aware of any connection? Kind regards Mervyn Johnson

Geoff,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Harry (Henry) Cobbe son of the same name late of Manor Street,Dublin & nephew of Edward( Uncle Eddie ) your deceased Father.I'm contacting you as I have come across old photos of the Cobbe family which feature your Dad, his brothers & also your Mum ( Muriel) which I am sure you would dearly love to see as they are evocative of time & place. I would also like to add that my Dad often reminisced about Eddie.

I may well have your address i.e. 55 Dorset Ave, Glanfield, Leicester oe3830 but as I don't have a telephone no to make contact, it triggered off my search on the Internet, hence, your posting on the web dated 2002. ( " not forgetting Mike , & postings from Jonathan & Sara ) so I'm hoping that this email reaches you ( given the lapse in time )

It's possible we may have an opportunity to link up, as I have arranged to visit my son Paul in Liverpool where he is a student on Tuesday evening the 15 Sept.I'll also be in the UK the following days the 16th & 17th returning to Dublin on the 18th (scheduled flight for 4 pm).I can, if you are agreeable (I'm open to suggestions )travel to Leicester by train on the morning of the 16th,to meet you, bearing in mind that I would have to be back in Liverpool that night.

Unfortunately I have a tight schedule, as Mary & I are away on holidays from the 7th to 12th Sept, so if you could contact me by return email ( marycobbe@yahoo.com)or telephone 01-8347510 ( house no) before say this Friday 6th I would very much appreciate it, as i'd be delighted to know if we could reach accommodation on my travel arrangements, as I don't want to delay any further your family access to these photos. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards
Cousin Harry

I am now fairly certain that Marshall Godolphin Cobbe Master R.N. and his wife Elizabeth Catherine Hammond (married South Mimms Jan 1816) had at least two children -

a daughter Frances Emilly born/bapt c1819 and as previously mentioned;

Charles Marshall Godolphin Cobbe born/bapt 1821 and dying before about 1837. Elizabeth lived until c1873 dying in Islington and Emilly lived until 1898 dying in Brighton.

For some of the time they lived together. Details of locations are listed in 19thC census returns - look out for spelling errors in the transcriptions.

In 1841 Elizabeth was with her sister in law Charlotte Godolphin Clay (nee Cobbe)'s family in Lambeth. Elizabeth died c1873 at the age of c 79 years.

Frances Emilly was born in Strand on the Green, Kew - Middlesex (slide to the left just before crossing Kew Bridge from "Chiswick") and she died, in Brighton 1898. It appears she never married but with a Caroline Cobbe was involved with the Godolphins Girls Scool, Salisbury, as were many of the Cobbe anad Burslem family decended from the Godolphins. Not sure if Caroline was Emilly's siter.

I am pleased to say that I have now started to assemble my http://godolphins.org.uk web site having hopefully settle on a design layout and hope to complete pages on Marshall Godolphin Cobbe Master RN and his brother Lt Charles Cobbe RN within the next week or so where research to date will be described in rather more detail with sources and acknowledgements etc. You are all welcomd to visit.
Hello Casey

I don't know whether you have found the information you have been looking for, if you haven't I should be more than happy to help.

The Cobbe family can be traced back to the parish of Wybunbury, Cheshire to about 1681. The earliest ancestor being William Cobbe who seems to have been living at Walgherton Hall. The branch you are descended are also descended from this William and his wife Ellinor. They both left wills which can be ordered from the Chester Record Office.

You can also contact me at jason_hoole@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Sarah

It is some time since your posting re Archbishop Cobbe and Charles Cobbe et al but I notice you referred to my website

http://17thwelsh.ukf.net.

It still hovers in cyberspace but I have upgraded it to

http://www.17thwelsh.org.uk

where corrections have been made. I am no longer able to service the "ukf" site. WWW seems to be very fickle with ISPs being changed and email addresses altered.

As I mentioned on the 12th July, the names Charles Cobbe Lt. RN and Charles Marshall Godolphin Cobbe are descended from the Archbishop's elder brother Lt. Col. Richard Chaloner Cobbe (1, there were four Richard Chaloner Cobbes, one in each succeeding generation. He was christened in Winchester Cathedral in June 1683 and his parents were Thomas Cobbe and his wife Veriana Chaloner, daughter of the regicide James Chaloner, hence the Chaloner in the Chaloner Cobbe name. She was buried "in" Winchester Cathedral.

Charles Marshal Godolphin Cobbe, son of Elizabeth Catherine Hammond and William Marshall Godolphin Cobbe. William was added some time after Christening in Easton Parish Church, Hants, 1785 is likely to be son of Rev Richard Chaloner Cobbe and his wife Sarah Burslem as the connection is the Rev. Langford who gave evidence to the Court of Chancery and wrote to William's sister in regard to the recent death of her nephew Charles (Marshall Godolphin Cobbe). Exact details are to hand but will require me to sort out my papers regarding the Cobbe family. Rev RCC and Sarah may have had 14 children, many dying in infancy, of whom I have traced some ten or so. Still hoping to find the others - as other researchers agree some of the information on RCC's churches given in the Oxford Alumni and other sources such as Burke and Debrett are dubious. As evidenced on the title page of Sarah Cobbe (nee Burslem)'s 1800 novel - Julia St. Helen.... Rev RCC(3) died before June 1800 when the book was published, as I recall. He was also Chaplain to the Earl of Moira - that line of research has not as yet borne fruit!

As always apologies for spelling and typos and slight inexactitudes. If anyone shows a specific interest, I'll refer to my research papers.

Graham Davies - http://www.grifd.com

Hi Stewart

Sorry to hear about David's death as it was he who gave me a lead to Marshall Godolphin Cobbe who I hopefully recognise as William Marshall Godolphin Cobbe (1785 - 1821) - please see my earlier replies today.

David and I corresponded for many months and he sent me a copy of the Hammonds of Edmonton booklet which is somewhere on my bookshelf.

Because of my relative remoteness from the PRO I also had some help from researcher - Bob O'Hara whom I hold in high esteem for helping me out freely at the PRO in my early quest for information on Charles Cobbe Lt. RN. He also provided me with good information on (William) Marshall Godolphin Cobbe including the ships on which he served - I think it also helped to reasonably well establish that William was son of RC Cobbe(3) and his wife Sarah (nee Burslem). Sarah was daughter of Rev James Burslem DD JP and his wife Sarah Oldershaw whose first husband was Marshal Greswold of Malvern Hall, Solihull. Hence, it is thought, why Marshal pervades through the Burslem and Cobbe children.

James, Sarah and Marshal Greswald and their son Humphrey Greswald who died aged around 9 yrs, also have a very interesting story behind them involving the House of Lords and losing lots of money - apparently James's and Sarah's second son William Marshal Burslem of the Royal Artillery sold his commission to pay of his father's debt to his brother Capt. Francis Burslem RN. All will be revealed, hopefully, on my www.godolphins.org.uk website before too long.

David did mention you when we had a short chat about Bligh and the Bounty.

Please do take care of his archives as I am sure you will. As before, the above is from memory but I'm pretty certain it is an accurate account from my papers - from various reliable sources.

please extend my deepest if belated sympathies to his family

As always, apologies for typos and spellings

warmest regards

graham davies

Sorry for typos in previous reply. Further on checking the cap badge it is the "Duke of Wellington's West Riding" Regiment. Most of the previous reply was from memory. If there are queries then I'll do my best to check my files which are all based on PRO, local ROs and parish registers etc as well as checking against other sources such as Adams, Wedgwood, Bell and Marsh Debbret and Burke.

Trying clear up the confusions, hopefully:

William Marshall Godolphin Cobbe was christened in Easton Parish Hampshire as Marshall Godolphin Cobbe (William appears to have been added later) on 31 Oct 1785. He later joined the Royal Navy and became Master Mariner RN. He left the RN c1816 and married Elizabeth Hammond at South Mimms January 1816. He died in Aug 1821 and is buried in Deptford Parish Church. It appears that they had but one child a son Charles Marshal Godolphin Cobbe, born early 1821 (exact info in my files) Charles died in the 1830s and there is some info at the PRO in Chancery files. I believe I may have found Elizabeth's death entry on Free BMD late 19th C.

The Charles Cobbe (Lt RN) who served on HMS Captain was brother to William Mater Mariner RN. He gained his Lt. Certificate on HMS Excellent, off Cadiz, April 1897, examined by Cuthbert Collingwood. He disappeared from the Navy lists mid 1798 the year his father Rev RCC(3) AM ceased being Rector of Bradenham. Charles, born/christened Mears Ashby, Northamptonshire 1779 served on; HMS Colossus from 1789 (10 yrs old as Capts Servant), HMS Niger 1791 as Able seaman, HMS Captain as Able, later Midshipman, HMS DIdo 1797 and Ville de Paris (rebuilt after the original sank) 1797. On gaining his Lt Cert he transferred to HMS St. George which was at or near Chatham for most of the begining of 1879. Unfortunately the St. George Pay Book and Muster Roll are not available so it is not possible to see if he tranferred to another ship despite extensive research at the PRO some years ago. There may have been a Charles Marshall Godolphin Cobbe in the "Merchant Navy" during the 19th century but so far no trace.

William was son od Rev Richard Chaloner Cobbe (No. 3) AM, (d before June 1800) brother of Richard Chaloner Cobbbe (No, 4) Military Surgeon (d 1829 will at PRO), brother of Frances, Countess of Huntingdon (d March 1820), grandson of Richard Chaloner Cobbe LLD (not DD) Vicar of Finglas et al and great grandson of Richard Chaloner Cobbe (No 1) Lt. Colonel Hawley's Foot, later 33rd then Duke of Wellington's West Yorkshire. Charles Cobbe Lord Archbishop of Dublin was RCC(1)'s younger brother. The other younger brother was William with RCC (1) in Hawley's Foot. Their great grandfather was James Chaloner regicide with his brother Thomas who signed the warrant of execution. Thomas escaped to the Netherlands as George Saunders and died in his bed. James, first cousin in law to Black Tom Fairfax, Cromwell's general and via him Governor of the Isle of Man apparently died in Peel Castle, possibly by his own hand c1659. His wife Ursula was granddaughter of Edmund Sheffield (Sheffeild) of whom a descendent Duke of Buckingham sold his house in London in 1783 to George III - known as Buckingham Palace. Incidentally, there is a Van Dyke portrait of Thomas Chaloner, (apparently incorrectly prefixed with a Sir) at the Hermitage in Leningrad. Also, the father of James and Thomas was Sir Thomas Chaloner the Younger, tutor/governor to the Prince of Wales, son of James 1 who died before inheriting the throne.

There's lots more including John of Gaunt/Katherine Roet as anscestors as well as the Dixie, Beaumont, Burslem and Godolphin families. In the wider Cobbe, Burslem descendent families are two VCs and five or six MCs and a couple of Military Medals.

William's grandfather Rev J. Burslem DD JP (b c1821 Packington) was son of James Burslem and Elizabeth Godolphin, his other grandfather was Richard Chaloner Cobbe (2) LLD (b c1727) son of RCC (1) and Mary Godolphin, sister of Elizabeth Godolphin.

The writer's wife is a direct descendent of Sir Thomas Chaloner the younger.

You are cordially invited to visit my 17thwelsh and Godolphin sites via www.grifd.com

Cobbe Family of Cheshire, England

Hi,

I am looking for information regarding the Cobbe Family of Cheshire, England; mostly located in the towns of Helsby, Frodsham and Walgherton.

My great-great grandfather was Thomas Cobbe Jr (b.1865 Frodsham, Cheshire. Died. 1919 Perth WA) who married Ellen (b. 1872 Manchester but surname unknown. Died. 1930 Perth WA). They moved to Western Australia in 1906-1907

Thomas was the son of Thomas Cobbe Snr (b.1837 Helsby) who married Sarah (b.1841 Helsby).

Thomas Cobbe Snr was the son of Elizabeth Cobbe (b.1807 Helsby) but his father is unknown. Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles Cobbe (b.1778 Walgherton) and Ellen (b.1778 Dellhern, Staffordshire)

If anyone has any information about the Cobbe's, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Casey Butler

I can trace back to my great grand uncle John Andrew Cobbe born 19 August 1841 Athy, County Kildare, Ireland . Some family members thought that there might be a connection back to Archbishop Charles Cobbe/ Newbridge House but I have been unable to trace any. I note that you have a tree which includes Archbishop Cobbe - can you see any connection?
Kind regards

Miss Frances Cobbe was known to have siblings but it doesn't seem to be on record.
Here is the mention of Charles Marshall Godolphin Cobbe I found. It doesn't sound verified though. (The Charles Cobbe, cited under naval records, in this article does suspiciously have the same date of death 1798 as my greatX4 grandfather Charles Cobbe who was married to Anne Power Trench. They might be mixing people up, I don't know. Not sure if my Charles Cobbe served.)
http://www.17thwelsh.ukf.net/C_CobbeRN_Pgs/C_Cobbe_RN_P01.ht...
This is also interesting.
http://books.google.com/books?id=BSkAAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA261&a...

Sorry about my error on one of my last post. It was the middle of the night here.
I don't think the person your looking for is a direct descendent of Archbishop Charles Cobbe because I have a complete copy of his tree(which you probably do as well) and I don't see were WMGC would fit in. I still think the Archbishops brother is somehow your link. To bad that part of the family tree seems incomplete.
Thank you for your three messages. They have prompted me to dig out my index on the Cobbes and try to make sense of the complexities of this illustrious family. I believe Miss Frances married Hans Francis Hastings on 12th May 1803 at St,Annes, Soho Square, London. He became the 11th Earl of Huntingdon and she became the Countess of same. Archbishop Charles Cobbe (b.1686/7) had a brother Lt.Col. Richard Chaloner Cobbe (1st) who married Miss Mary Godolphin. Richard Chaloner Cobbe (4th) (b.c.1777) was an Army Surgeon. I suspect I am getting hopelessly muddled, but perhaps you can put me right! The only Charles Marshall Godolphin Cobbe I have a record of was born 8th January 1821 and was christened on 14th February at St.Paul, Deptford. He died in 1833, aged 12. Was he serving on HMS Captain as a boy? Or was it an earlier CMGC serving on an earlier HMS Captain? The Cobbes I am interested in are William Marshall Godolphin Cobbe of High Wycombe, Bucks. who married Miss Elizabeth Catherine HAMMOND on 27th January 1816 at South Mimms in Hertfordshire and who settled in Church Street, Edmonton, Middlesex and Water-loo place, Deptford. WMGC died in August 1821, aged 36. I cannot prove he was related to the Newbridge House Cobbes yet but, given some more hard facts, I think it is very likely! Thank you. David Hicks.

Sorry I think I made a mistake over where William Cobbe fits in but I'm pretty sure he is in that line of the family. I thought he may have been a brother of Frances Cobbe but I'm not sure now.
That part of the family tree (on my copy) only shows Frances (because she married Hans Francis 11th Earl of Huntingdon) but I'm sure she had a couple other siblings.
Sorry again.

I would really like to know who all of Thomas's and Charle's children were and am I descended from one of them. My father Dennis Cobbe emigrated from Newzealand to California USA in the 70's but I would really like to visit places that have meaning for me in Ireland. It would be great to meet relatives however distantly related we may be. Sincerely, Janice Cobbe (Biehl)

I wonder about the langley. William was born in 1851 so Thomas his father must have been born at least 1831 and probably earlier.

William also named one of his daughters Alice Claxton Cobbe the claxton as far as I can tell does not come from Williams wife or her family.

regards
Caroline

Newbridge House Cobbe's

Reply for Caroline Cheverton:

There were several Thomas Cobbes - I don't have one born in 1851 - most of my Cobbes in the index are earlier. Do you know Thomas's parents names?

Charles C., Archbishop of Dublin, built Newbridge House about 1737. He died on 14th April 1765 leaving one surviving son and heir. He was Thomas (b.1733) who m. Lady Elizabeth Beresford de la Poer in either 1751 or 1755. Their son Charles (b.1756) died in 1798 sixteen years before his father.

I am trying to find out how William Marshall Godolphin Cobbe (who m. Elizabeth Catherine Hammond in January 1816 at South Mimms, Hertfordshire) is related to the Newbridge House Cobbes and the names and dates of birth of his children. Legend has it that one son was a captain in the H.E.I.C.S. - unfortunately it doesn't mention his christian name of the names of any brothers!

cobbe of manor street, dublin

my father was one of the Cobbe family who lived in Manor Street, Dublin before he left to live in England after the world war, approx 1946. He was vitually the youngest of the familly, having one younger brother, and several older brothers all of whom pre-deceased him. he lost touch with his Irish family due to living in England, and I and my brother Mike would be pleased to pick up with any family members able to and interested in helping us to put together our family history. we know very little, but are keen to fill the vacuum in our family history. If you can help please respond. Thank you,
Geoff Cobbe.
