Sally Ann Coblentz?

My wife's mother, Sally Ann Coblentz Doyle Clark, was born abt. 1931, probably in Ohio, and died in 1966 in Calgary, Canada. She was apparently the daughter of Henry Coblentz (b. 1901) and Margaret Hildebrand (b. 1905), and had a sister, still living, Jane Margaret. I am looking for some documentation on Sally Coblentz Clark but cannot find any. Any leads or sources would be most appreciated.

I am not sure exactly what the relationship is but you might start with the fact that the spelling of the name was change when they left germany the german spelling is Koblenz.

He made horseradish and was a character. It was said that his wife died giving birth to twins and so did his daughter. Both the his twin granddaughters died before their first birthday. The family said he died of a broken heart. He is buried in Hope Cemetery in Lansing, Michigan.
We'll have to compare notes and photos using regular email when and if I get my computer working. I can receive but not send messages.
Check out photos of Highway/Heighway on ancientfaces.com The family used both spellings. Those who came to Michigan use Highway.
Re: Colbentz, Lana Indiana

Nathan was alive when his father passed away as he was involved in lawsuit over his father's estate. He also was listed on the 1860 census with Rachel and Levi Swinehart.
Nathan lived with his family in a house one block west of the main street in Pierceton, Indiana next to a church. Moved to Pierceton about 1900.
Monroe was Nathan and Jane's 7th male child. That let's 5 males that we do not have records for. The 1890 census has number of children to mother as 15 and 6 as living. I've wondered if they meant living at home or living as being alive.
Jane Mabie died after giving birth to twins at age 54.
Family oral history says that Nathan's mother died and he went to live on the Indian Reservation. He told his grand kids of hunting deer with bow and arrows. However my research shows that his mother did not die while he was a child. After Nathan's father died there was a legal dispute over his estate as indicated by court records in Fulton County.
Nathan died shortly after his daughter, Rosetta's, death. She died after giving birth to twins, boy and girl. The twins both died before reaching first birthday. It was said that he was a broken man after that. He is buried in St. Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Michigan. His wife died after giving birth to twins, also.
Newspaper clipping: OLD-TIMER_Nate Heighway pictured above, probably the only picture taken, was a colorful figure in Pierceton in the early days. Nate "didn't take to pictures."
This picture (see scrapbook) was taken by Mrs. Lester Culbertson in the pring of 1919 in the rear of the building now used by the Whiko School Corporation on Elm street. The digging of dandelions was the occupation at the moment.
Nate came here when a very young man in 1900 [note:he was in Pierceton well before 1900and in 1900 he was in about 47)] and spent most of his life at various jobs such as the above, digging fish worms and sassafras bark to sell to the people in town.
He had a wife and family, but as far as anyone knows there are no survivors at this time. (Boy were they wrong.)
NOTE: We were told by an old timer in Pierceton that Nathan made and sold horse radish.
Nathan spent the winters during his later years with his daughter Rosetta Highway St. Clair in Michigan and summers in Pierceton. He passed away in Michigan and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lansing.
Nathan definitely has survivors.

Oral family history states that Rosetta had a half brother named Beard.
Kosciuski County Marriages

COBLENTZ, Elnora BEARD, Joseph A. 25 Oct 1886 H:170
COBLENTZ, Lana J. I then looked at the actual census form and confirmed this information.
I don't have any other information on Nathan, and I don't have any idea why this enumeration appears to conflict with the marriage record from 1877. Or if there were possibly TWO Nathan Highways.

Who are they??? Indiana Census 1910
HIGHWAY CLARENCE M.
I'm working with the Pierceton Library to scan old photographs of the town. I've found several snapshots, ca. 1915, of an older gentleman named Nate Highway/Heighway. He evidently was a cantankerous town character who often begged for coffee money. I recall that he picked and sold some sort of produce (onion?). He was a thin, wiry man and a letter referred to him as "the mayor of Jacksonville" but this must have been a nickname for Pierceton. A short write-up appeared about him in the Pierceton Press in 1966 during the centennial (I'll have to dig it up). Is this the same Nathan, father of the man you're researching? Is so, what do you know about him? -Joan Hostetler

I am a Costa Rican (Central America) Coblentz. I can trace my family back to 1450. It is debatable but the name origins of COBLENTZ came from Portugal or Spain. The Coblentz name already existed before the town of Koblenz was named.

Many of the Coblentz, Coblence, or Koblentz settled in Alscea, Mets, Lorraine area in Germany. That same territory became French territory in 1872. Many comunes or villages like Sarreburg, Bliensbruck, Lixheim, Colmar, Sarre Union, and Sarreguimes were full of Coblentz families.

At the same time the some Coblentz came to the American continent directly from Ft. Coblentz, Prussia. Some came directly from Germany also. So, the main migration is threefold.
Germany, Ft.Coblentz in Prussia, and France. Other countries exist but contributed in less quantity of migration.

The main countries recipients in the American Continent of Coblentz are Mexico, USA, Peru, and Costa Rica.

Myrna, My 4th great grandfather was Johannes/John Coblentz who married Elizabeth Ecard. I believe his father was Philip Coblentz, brother to Peter and Herman. Search "Peter Wolfe"+"Jacob Coblentz". You should find results that show the settlement of Philip's estate with a list of his nine children. I believe the John in Ohio is the John Coblentz who moved to Columbiana Co, OH in 1804. That John, I believe, was the John b. 1764 who married Elizabeth Ecard. Please contact me at jchap617@yahoo.com for more information. Jane

I am hoping to connect my gr gr grandmother, Sarah Coblentz Fuehrer (or Fear), b. 1844 in Montgomery Co. OH, d 30 May 1882, in Dayton. I know her maiden name to be Coblentz from funeral records. She is buried at Woodland Cemetery, Dayton. Census data show her father to have been born in Maryland, and I am assuming she is a descendant of John Adam Coblentz, or one of the other Coblentz' from Frederick Co MD. that settled in Montgomery. Co. in the early 1800s. A possible (probable?) census listing of this Sarah A Coblenz is 1850 Wayne, Montgomery Co, Ohio, which has a houehold consisting of:
Elizabeth Coblentz, age 27.
Sarah A Coblentz, age 5,
Daniel age 4
Dachara age 1.
No father is listed, and I cannot be sure that Elizabeth is Sarah's mother, as relationships were not given in the record. Living next door was the household of Daniel Coblentz, age 37.
Any information on any of these Coblentz, and how they relate to the Maryland Coblentz families would be appreciated.
Was your John Coblentz born in either 1777 or 1779? Peter Coblentz had two wives; Susanna Keller and Elizabeth Hesson. Susanna and Peter had three children: an infant boy (1760), John Adam *my ancestor* (1762-1838), and Elizabeth (1764-1822). Susanna died in 1764 and Peter quickly married Elizabeth Hesson. They had 9 children: Mary Margaret (1765-1849), Catherine (1767-1849), Major Peter (1769-1851), Jacob (1772-??), Julianna (1775-1846), John (1777-1848), John Philip (1779-1859), George Coblentz, (1783-1839), and Daniel (1787-1861).

This means Peter had three sons; John Adam, John, and John Philip, who could be your missing relative. They were all born in Maryland. These names and dates come from the book The Coblentz Family in America, 1743-1982 compiled by Ruth Coblentz, which I have borrowed from my mother. If you have any other questions, please contact me!

Nathan King is my great-grandfather. I have a book, The Coblentz Family in America, 1743-1982 compiled by Ruth Coblentz, which belongs to my mother. I have used it to start my research on my family here on the website. This is some basic information I can give you:

Norman Coblentz (b. 9 Mar 1842, d. 7 Sep 1918) married Mary Ellen Sutton (b. 13 Aug 1849, d. 7 Feb 1840). They had 15 children:

- Thomas Daniel (b. 19 Sep 1865, d. 13 Jul 1938)
- Sarah Jane (b. 23 Jan 1967, d. 1869)
- Charles Irvin (b. 18 May 1868, d. 1949)
- Norman Austin (b. 20 Jan 1870, d. 16 Mar 1960)
- Mary Avaline (b. 25 Aug 1872, d. 1967)
- Nathan King (b. 3 Oct 1873, d. 28 Aug 1946)
- Martha Dorothy (b. 5 Jan 1875, d. 1957)
- William Albert (b. 1876, d. 1902)
- Elizabeth M. Wesley (b. 16 Nov 1923, d. 18 Oct 1991)
- Martha E. (b. 1928, ??)

I didn't have the connection between Willis and Emma on my tree! I have tons more information on the Coblentz family and some on the Cain family, although you probably have more accurate research on that than I do.
Your ancestor Jesse Frederick is the brother of my grandfather's father Nathan King. Here is some of the information I have on the family:

Norman Coblentz (b. 9 May 1842, Randolph Co, Indiana, d. 7 Sep 1918, Union City, Randolph Co, Indiana) married Mary Ellen Sutton (b. 13 Aug 1849, Delaware Co, Indiana, d. 7 Feb 1940, Union City, Randolph Co, Indiana). They were married on 24 Dec 1863. Together, they had 15 children (!):

- Thomas Daniel (b. 19 Sep 1865, New Lisbon, Henry Co, Indiana, d. 13 Jul 1938 Payette, Payette Co, Idaho)
- Sarah Jane (b. 23 Jan 1867, d. 1869)
- Charles Irvin (b. 18 May 1868, Indiana, d. 1949)
- Norman Austin (b. 30 Jan 1870, Union City, Adams Co, Indiana, d. 16 Mar 1960, Lane Co, Oregan)
- Mary Avaline (b. 25 Aug 1872, d. 1967)
- Nathan King (b. 3 Oct 1873, Indiana, d. 28 Aug 1946, Ohio)
- Martha Dorothy (b. 5 Jan 1875, Indiana, d. 1957)
- William Albert (b. 1876, Indiana, d. 1902)
- Elizabeth M. I have our family traced all the way back to the first Coblentz in the family to come to America. This all come from the book The Coblentz Family in America, 1743-1982 compiled by Ruth Coblentz.

Hope you find this helpful.

My mother's family has been traced back to this same Hans Nicolas Koplentz who was born in Fort Coblentz, Prussia. He first married Susanna Keller (b. 1733, d. 17 Jan 1764, m. 9 May 1759). They had three children before her death:
- Infant (b. 11 Jul 1760, d. 1760)
- John Adam (b. 19 May 1762 Fredrick, Fredrick County, Maryland, USA, d.28 Jan 1838 Montgomery County, Ohio, USA)
- Elizabeth (b. 17 Jan 1764, d. 1822)

Then he married Elizabeth Hesson (b. 14 Feb 1745, d. 4 Nov 1824 Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, USA, m. 5 Nov 1764) They had 9 children:
- Mary Margaret (b. 1 Dec 1765, d. 10 Dec 1849)
- Catherine (b. 4 Sep 1767, d. 14 Apr 1849)
- Major Peter (b. 22 Sep 1769, d. 8 Apr 1851)
- Jacob (b. 27 Oct 1772, d. ??)
- Julianna (b. 4 Apr 1775, d. 17 Feb 1846)
- John (b. 10 Oct 1777, d. 28 Jan 1848)
- John Philip (b. 10 Apr 1779, d. 9 Dec 1859)
- George (b. 16 Jun 1783, d. 14 Nov 1839)
- Daniel (b. 28 Oct 1787, d. 22 Dec 1861)

My family comes from John Adam Coblentz (son of Susanna) and his wife, Elizabeth Kahlmenin Coleman (b. 12 Jul 1769, d. 5 May 1862, m. 12 Feb 1788) In 1807, John, Elizabeth, and their first 7 children moved from Maryland to Van Buren Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. If your Coblentz ancestors are from Ohio, there is a good chance that they are from this line.

Most of my names, dates, relationships, etc. come from the book: The Coblentz Family in America, 1743-1982 compiled by Ruth Coblentz. I don't believe it's a published book, but I do believe it's available in a couple of family history museums in the US. It is a book that my mother loaned me when I started looking into our family's history.

If you have any more questions about the Coblentz family - please contact me! Hope this all helps!

Dear John,

Source for:
Elizabeth Hessong b. 1745 m. Peter (Koblenz) Coblentz b. 1732:
Maryland Marriages - Barnes p. 105 (FR-1143).
Death in N-I-S as given but Coblentz Gen. gives 4 Nov 1824.
[N-I-S="Names In Stone", Holdcraft, John Mehrling.]

John Philip Coblentz , Juliana, Lenorah and Jacob are buried at Christ Ref. UCC in Middletown
so presumedly Hermann is also. I can check out the graves and church records. But maybe I should
wait until morning. I am tempted to go over with a flashlight tonight. My father collected these records
over 50 years and kept the records for both the Reformed and Lutheran churches in Middletown.
I can check his notes but I am still not sure about all the Hessons.

I did not have a second spouse for Elizabetha or J. Peter Coblentz. Can you supply them? I got the Orth surname from you. I will check the other books here in Maryland. Annette Burgert's research is very accurate.

Happy New Year to All,
Ben

Re: Eliz. (Coblentz) Johnson, b. 1790, MD>OH

They say you shouldn't work forward to your ancestor, but should work backwards from what you know. But I was interested in your Elizabeth's pedigree, and thought I would use the IGI to see if it might lead in the direction I expected it to go. Middletown, Frederick Co., MD, was the key to my pursuing this further. As to linking your two persons, I will leave that to others. But from a cursory look at the IGI on-line, I suspect your Elizabeth to be the daughter of John Adam Coblentz and Elizabeth Kahlman or Coleman, with Johan Adam being born in Frederick Co. in 1762 and baptized in the Frederick Reformed Church (?). He, in turn, is the son of Peter and Susanna (Keller) Coblentz, md. in that church (!) in 1759. Some are claiming this Peter to have been born in "Fort Coblentz," Germany, in Feb. 1731 or 1732, but he is the Joh. Peter Coblentz baptized on 11 March 1733 in the Friedelsheim Reformed Church, Pfalz or Palatinate, Germany. Peter's parents were Niclas and Anna Catharina Coblentz, md. at Gönnheim in 1727. My reference on all this is Annette Kundelman Burgert's excellent book, "Palatine Origins of Some Pennsylvania Pioneers." It should be found in any genealogy library of any size, as it is a key source. She will tell you that this Niclas was the son of David Cobelentz and Magdalena, md. in 1693 at the Friedelsheim Ref. Ch., and that son Joh. Niclas was bp. 14 Jan. 1697. What she doesn't tell you is that there is a David "Cobolenz" b. in 1668 at nearby Ellerstadt to Abraham & Sara (Paul) Coblentz. And it goes back further from there. All this can be found on the IGI, and then checked further by reading the films of the parish registers. The LDS film no. for the Friedelsheim records is 0247601; check with your local Family History Center to get started. Once you confirm this lineage, you can work on documenting your other Coblentz back to it through a brother (if they are, in fact, related).

I was looking for Coblentz family and wondered if you still need information My grandpa was Willis Coblentz and was born in Michigan Aunt Nellie( grandpa's half sister)was living in Charleroix Michigan and as a child, I visited her. I take care of the graves of grandpa, Uncle Doc(Lester) and mom and dad, etc. The story of this group is complicated. Grandpa thought his grandpa was his father when his dad died when he was 4. His mom married 3 brothers(after each one died) and grandpa had 1/2 bros and sister. My maiden name is Coblentz and I have been searching for years stopped due to injuries and grandchildren coming and life guess I need to start looking again well I talked to John Coblentz a lot and he is very knowledgeable about the clan the coblentzes from Michigan got mixed and moved to Springfield Twp Ohio to work the farms Grandpa siad he and Uncle Doc got "farmed out" when he was old enough there is a mystery there too because his mom married the third Brother-or cousin/bro?? and I think from the years there was a divorce but I am not sure I found the cemetary of the mom is where all the fam are buried My sister remembers talks about Uncle AL from Grandpa and he would be grampa's great Uncle Ezra was his father. if you email me maybe I can search the files. I have land info on Ezra(he died of typhoid in Michigan. Grandpa visited with my Aunt Mae the land that they used to own(it is a road now. well that's it for now take care barbara0000000000000 my cat contributed on the keyboard Solomon was the child of second marriage of Johannes and Keziah Solomon and Levi are brothers. This Johannees was grandpa's great granddad

I have a Daniel in my line b. 1803/1804 MD, parents.. John and Elizabeth Coblentz. I'm hoping that someone out there has a birth or death record on Daniel Coblentz to verify his parents.
Hi Joan, thank you for responding and the information. The Daniel Coblentz b. 1804 MD d. 1881 IN, do you or anyone out there have a birth or death record for him. I have a Daniel Coblentz b.abt 1803/1804 that is lost. His father is John Coblentz b. 1762 PA d. 1828 Mahoning Co. OH. I can account for Daniel in Columbiana Co until 1820 and then John's will, list Daniel....will abt 1828, after that he's lost. I know the Indiana bunch is cousins of his. I need a birth record or the death record of Daniel to see if he belongs to my John Coblentz or your John Adam Coblentz. Any clues
on how I can verify this confusion?? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Myrna

Johann Nicholas Coblentz child

Hi Researchers....... the child Anna Maria Coblentz b. 7/1/1740 Germany is listed as death 7/7/1740 Germany, by many of the researchers. My question is.. Is this the same Anna Maria that shows up on the St Andrew ships list as being 3 yrs old?? If it is not, does anyone know who she is?? Does anyone know anything about Johann Adam Coblentz? I'm trying to clear up some holes and confusion in my research, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Myrna

Hi... Thanks for responding. I guess Herman is not the one i'm looking for. It seems to me that my John Coblentz b. 1762 has not among all the Coblentz that has been researched. So.. I have a new one at add. I have traced and documented this line back to John. I just can't seem to find his father. It has to be one of the brother's from Germany. But i'll keep looking. Thanks a bunch for your input. Myrna
