Hey Sme :-)

Here's some info for you... The Coburn/Colburne group headed by Edward Colburne, b. 1618' England is not DNA related to the Scottish Coburns. I heard that lore also growing up, but now there are DNA groups researching Coburn/Colburns and that was the result. My father goes back in a straight male line and his DNA does not match the Scottish Coburns.

The line that went from MA to IN, then had a son with family who went to Wyoming I believe to help set up a town, but died, drowned, in a boat accident returning to IN. There's also been a governor out there, Idaho? Who was related to the line. I suspect some of my line (the daughters) wound up in CA, and I know we had relations in KY and TX as well as FL.

Good luck. Feel free to explore my tree!

I'm really new at this, and not very good, but I have received alot of photos and info, this last year, several years ago, it was hard, i found a few relatives, from Illinois that helped me along the way, what I really wanted was to find the connection, when they started exploring the west from the east coast, I know it would be through children, but they has so many children, oit is like finding a needle in a hay stack, and I love stories, I have a few, I have copied all my info. would love info u may have perhaps we can exchange info my email is lady317@hughes.net...for a few months then i probably go back to cox.net all info will be the same..thanks many
Susan m.(Coburn) Easley

Illinois, ohio, i am trying to find a connection from new england to the west. daddy said that there was canadian indian in family too, but not found that connection either, i know there has been doctors, teachers and politians, one story of one killed by a bear and one from indians, best family tree thus far comes from Ancestry/Rodgers..dad said we come from the edward/edward line Scottish, but i have not made a direct connection to scotland as of yet. stories from Salem, Ma
and the witches era, one shot himself in the head, suicide. don't know why, would like to know. would love to read your info...thanks cuz

Cockburn b abt 1793 NC, and Francis is the son of Headley Coburn b abt 1772 in NC. Headley's dad was Francis "Frank" Coburn b abt 1740 in NC.
Is there anyone out there still researching this family, born in NC and later went into Fayette Co., Tn. Francis had a dau, Martha who married a Green Covey, We've always heard that she was Indian, but so far nothing to prove any of this.. Records also show that Green had a son by a Celia Coburn who was either black or mulatto.. Does anyone know if there is any Indian within the family? e-mail me at "wescovey52@hotmail.com"

Apparently our line carried the Colburn name till late 1700's when a Colburn cousin married another Colburn cousin...then it appeared to switch. Do you have incontrovertible evidence of where Edward came from? It would be great to do your DNA and join the Colburn Project on worldfamilies... Thanks for the tip on northern England! I'll check it out.

My line is Edward-Robert-Edward-Samuel-Stephen-Orin-Alonzo-Willie Henry-Ernest-my dad and me- all of us born with the Colburn name. Edward came from a village in North Yorkshire England. If you do a search of 'Colburn village in Richmond District of North Yorkshire England'- you will find many sites-some with the history of the village-and some of todays events of the village. It is pretty cool!

Back at ya, cuz! Everyone always suspects James Coburn of being in the line, but I've never seen proof of it, and I don't think anyone from his family could prove it either, tho I could be mistaken. The ship Edward came over on was called The Defense. His name is on the manifest. Anything before Edward b. 1618 I haven't been able to definitively ascertain beyond a shadow of a doubt. You have proof of forebears? I have Revolutionary War veterans in my line and know who they are. Are yours listed in the DAR archives? Do you have DNA tests results? Do you still bear the Coburn/Colburn name?

Stella Cottrell, in the original post gave wrong information. She combined two Coburn families that are not related into one family through their sons both named Samuel. DISREGARD what Stella Cottrell wrote in the original post.

The first of the two Coburn families Stella Cottrell combined are descendants of Edward Colburn from England who purchased land in Dracutt on the Merrimac, then pretty much populated Massachusettes. Samuel and Mary Bradstreet's Samuel married Sarah Bradstreet in Massachusettes. All of his children were born there and many of their children were, too. My guess is that he also died in Dracut.

The second family, (yours) are descendants of James L Cobun (Coburn) of Chester County Pennsylvania who settled in Virginia. James L's parents were William Coebourne and Mary Baker who were both born in England and died in Pennsylvania.

According to your linage, you are related to Samuel Coburn and Margaret Burnette Cathey. Captain Samuel Coburn came from North Carolina with Daniel Boone. (Do NOT confuse another non-related major Coburn family from Martin County, North Carolina.)

Please contact me privately (Pogo207@aol.com)for Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia Coburn/Cobun/Coeburn linage.

Hi Susan (I'm Susan also.) I'll invite you to my tree and you can hunt around in there if you like. My branch is more fleshed out. I'm descended from original ancestor: Edward, then son Daniel, Edward, Willard, Willard Jr., James, James Frederick, Henry Raymond, and my father Frederick Warren. I've tried to build as many stories of the people's lives as I can to bring them more to life. I've been more successful with the last three generations naturally, than the earlier ones. I've met some interesting people along the line, VERY few who still have the original Coburn/Colburn surname. My sisters and I are the last of Daniel's line. So, welcome cousin! I know that my branch were merchant farmers until the industrial age, when many went into engineering, machinery, railroad engineering, and electricity. Other lines had distinct religious bents, while others remained in farming, dairy, up to this day. Others were lines of lawyers and politicians. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

I am looking for info on William Henry Coburn from Union Co., KY. I have searched and searched online to try and figure out his ancestry with no luck. According to his tombstone, he was born July 4, 1843 and died December 24, 1904. He married Mary Elizabeth Mattingly in Union Co., KY in 1865. I have a copy of the marriage record and he states he was born in Mason Co., KY. There are definitely Coburns in Mason Co. but I am unable to connect him to any so far. If anyone has any info or ideas on William H. Coburn, I'd love to hear them. He and his wife had 2 girls and 2 boys -- with only one son (my husband's 2nd great-grandfather) making it past infancy.

I have family stories of my grandfather going to Texas...I believe he married there on his first marriage, and I always wondered what drew him there originally. His line was from Indiana, and Massachusetts before that. Do you know the professions of any of your ancestors? Your g/father, gg/father, etc.? Do you know what generation you are? Did any of your ancestors serve in any wars that you know of? My email is: lemonelephants@hotmail.com if you'd like to communicate through that. I hope to hear from you again.
Hi and welcome! The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) has a book on the Coburns bringing a number of the descendants of Edward Coburn/Colburn into the late 1800's-early 1900's. Any Coburn today descended from that family is likely a 9th or 10th generation American, or more. I'm always looking for folks who've carried the Coburn/Colburn name to date.
