Hi,
I have information on this family, back to Stephen Coby (1811-1896) and his wife, Cornelia Hardy (1818-1897). Stephen was a builder/contractor who lived in Brooklyn.

Hey there, I have just now read your post. So sorry about getting by to you so late. I have come across that name to, & I have forgotten now how I did. My GrandMother, Annie Sealy did live in Cedar Key when my Father, Eli Sealy was born & I think all the rest of their children. I believe by 1910 or 1920 there were living in Orlando, Florida & running a boarding house. I think I have also seen her name listed as Annie Salee. I honestly do not know how Coby got in there. Do you have an clue?

The children they had were: Eugene, Eli, Joyce, Marylea, Ester, & I believe that is all I can think of right now. Annie Sealy is not my biological GrandMother. Eli Sealey (this is how he spelled the last name) raised me from about 2 or 3, I believe. My cousin & I (Patricia, daughter of my Uncle Eugene)use to go visit with her in the summertime in Orlando. We absolutely loved spending time with her! She was such a sweet, sweet woman! I don't know if they were Native American or English or French.
Were you one of the children of the names I have mentioned? I loved his whole family so much & felt like they were mine. Believe it or not I have lost track of the Sealeys. Most of them have died off now, but I do believe my cousin Patricia is still alive & would love to get in touch with her again!
I do have a really old picture of them (James & Annie) pretty soon after they were married.
Please do get by in touch with me when you can, & we will try to cipher this out. And I am sorry about this taking so long.
Barbara Anne

Good morning, Doug, ... and thank you for writing. If you're looking for the COBY family, check records around Baltimore, MD. There's a good-sized group of them there. In the meantime, I've learned this summer that I'm not looking for COBYs at all. The woman who's last name I thought was COBY turned out to be a JACOBY. Someone got it wrong on the original death record I was using as a basis for that COBY search. I was provided with a family Bible this summer that gave me the correct name. You're right about a small family... and tough to search. I did find one person by that name in Steuben County, so if you're looking, you might be able to check out that one.
Thanks again for your input... it is much appreciated.
Bob Snyder
Midland, michigan

Just thought I would mention this to you. My GrandMother, Annie Sealy (Seley) was married to James Sealey and lived in Ceder Key, Florida. Somehow the name that are listed also are James & Annie Coby. I don't know how this happened, but it is listed when you look her up in the 1910 census. It might be a connection somehow, and thought I would let you know if it helps.

I have an Alfred Coby, b. ca. 1851 in NY, and both parents b. NY, who shows up in the Town of Orange, Schuyler Co., NY in 1880 with a wife and son George. The wife's name looks like Adlif. Does anyone know anything about Alfred? He doesn't seem to appear anywhere else.

Someone needs to start a data base on all these Cobys so we can see if we can create any links.

Coby in New York

Does anyone on this board know of a Coby family in the vicinity of Yates/Steuben/Schuyler counties in New York? My g.g.g.grandmother was Sally Coby (as per the death record of her daughter, Emily (Lake) Rarick (1843-1906). Sally ostensibly married Isaac Lake about 1840. Emily is living with the family of Jesse Foster in Pulteney, Steuben Co., in the 1850 and 1860 census, suggesting that her mother has died. I would speculate that Sally should have been b. about 1820, but I know nothing more about her. Any help appreciated.

Lon Coby

Still looking for information on Lon Coby. We can definitely place him in Marshall County, Alabama in the 1910 census, married to Mary Jane Wright. They were my great-grandparents. Their children included my grandfather, Robert Manuel Coby, who was born in Guntersville, AL in 1904. Robert Manuel married Gertrude Dobbs, and one of their children was my mother: Annie Maude.

I see Lon Coby in some other records around that time; however, I'm not sure he's "my" Lon Coby. He is said to have married and lived with several women (the cad!), including my great-grandmother's sister, Ann/Anne/Anna.

Family legend says that he was born in New York or Pennsylvania and perhaps came to the South during or after the Civil War, but the 1910 census indicates that he was born in Alabama, as was his mother (unknown), but that he didn't know the birthplace of his father.

This fits in with the other family legend that he was adopted.

He may have died in 1957. This ties in with my father's (Bruce Carlton Steffens) recollection that Lon was dead when my parents married in 1959.

If you know any more information, it would be appreciated.

I would love to see the photo you have of a Margaret Cobey. There seems to be a very distinct resemblance in the Coby families. I have received the marriage cert. of my gg grandfather & gg grandmother (Mary Farley) (March 1835) and also the birth cert of my g grandfather (Philip born 1839) and his brother ( Patrick born 1837) sister Rose(born 1836). There are many Margaret's in the Coby family. I also had the page from 1821 census and there were 2 Coby families living within 10 miles of Lisley one family had a Mathew as the father and the other had a Peter as the father. I believe the son listed as a Mathew of the father Mathew was my gg grandfather. I received all this info from the Geneology Research Centre in Ireland.
Since I had all this my computer crashed and I lost everything I had since 2004. There is definitly a connection I believe between Peter and Mathew, I think their parents were brothers but without knowing the mother's names it is hard to research back any further.

I also have a Peter Coby in my tree but can't confirm if it's your guy because we have practically nothing on him. Apparently, he was quite secretive and all we know is that he was born c.1806 in Ireland and in 1841 had a daughter, Rebecca, in Co. Cavan. Nothing is known about her mother and Rebecca came out to New Zealand and married Lawrence Flynn (also very little known about).

Peter Coby married Bridget Brydie/Brady abt. 1830. They lived in Kilmore, Co. Cavan Ireland. Their daughter Margaret Cobey/Coby/Covey (spelt 3 different ways) was born abt. 1837 and arrived in Victoria Australia on her own and married in 1856, Murdoch Cameron McAulay when she was 19 years of age. The early family remains a mystery and I note that a lot of postings also have 'Covey' as a variant of the name. Would like to hear from anyone who's family came from Co. Cavan

I can understand your frustration with this name. I have a Margaret Coby/Cobey/Covey (spelt 3 different ways) who came to Australia pre 1856 on her own and married a much older man. She was from Kilmore, Co Cavan Ireland, yet her family has remained elusive. The different spellings would most likely have something to do with their accent, although COVEY is usually an English name and pronounced Kuvvey (that is double v, not a w and the u as pronounced in cup) and this does not fit with the Irish accent which has not helped my research. Hope this is of some value to you. Mick.

This is spooky - my name is Stephen Coby, my father is Doug Coby. We live in England (I live in Norwich, Norfolk. My father lives in Suffolk). There are quite a few Coby's in this part of the country, but not many in the rest of the UK. I've noticed there are quite a few in the USA - it's fascinating to think we may be related !!

Hi, I have been trying to research my family name but cannot get any further than my gg grandfather,
My Dad's name was William Colby, my grandfather was Mathew Covey and his father was Philip Covey on census (born 1847) but on church records was either Colby or Cobey. My gg grandfather was Mathew Coby on 1881 census.(born 1807)
It seems Mathew and his wife Bridget Gibbons came from Ireland with their son Philip, whether they had other children or not I do not know. They arrived in Philadelphia to meet a brother who was already here and then came to Canada. It seems he had another brother who settled in North Lawrence, New York.
Mathew Coby died in Templeton West Quebec before 1901 census.
Philip Covey died in Lowe Quebec in approx 1917.
Mathew Covey died in Hull Quebec
William Colby died in Ottawa On
Kristina --

Do you have any idea where your Coby family originated? My g.g.g.grandmother was Sally (COBY) LAKE, the wife of Isaac J. Lake, whose daughter, Emily LAKE, m. Abel Rarick in Yates Co., NY. Both those family names (RARICK and COBY) are very uncommon and hard to find anywhere. Looking in an internet directory, there are only eleven listings under COBY in all of the states of New York and Pennsylvania. There is a strong group of them in the Baltimore, MD area, but I've never contacted any of them. What do you know about your COBY family?

Hoping to hear from you soon, I am,

Sincerely yours,
Bob Snyder,Buffalo, NY

David -- Do you trace any of your family back into New York or Pennsylvania? My Coby connection is my fourth great grandmother, Sally Coby, who married Isaac J.
Hello Nicholas,

I'm not certain how experienced you might be in genealogical research, but if you already know that your father changed his name from Jacoby to Coby, you probably need to do a couple of things:
First: See if there is a Jacoby page here in , and post your listing there, since both names are appropriate for you.
Secondly: If you have access to a Mormon Family History Center, check out the IGI (International Genealogical Index) for listings of the name Jacoby in Germany. The attendants at the Center will
be able to show you how to do that.
Remember, if you're looking for your ancestors, you want to research Jacoby. If you're looking for descendants of your dad's you need to work both ways for your cousins under the name Coby, and for your
siblings of your dad's who may not have changed their names. Good luck!

Bob Snyder,
Buffalo, NY

Hello Marguerite,

You're right -- this is a small family, and finding researchers is like pulling hen's teeth. So far, I have only one other e-mail address for a Coby-hunter: A694TINA@AOL.COM

I am descended from Isaac J. Lake who appears to have been a resident of Yates Co., NY. He m. Sally Coby, and their daughter, Emily Lake m. my g.g. grandfather, Abel Rarick. They lived in Yates for a short time,
then removed to Michigan. I have no evidence that Isaac and Sally (Coby) Lake ever left New York, but then I have no solid evidence that they were ever here, either.

I've been looking for leads on this family for years, but have hit mostly brick walls. I have a small data base started, but it only has one family in it and they're not connected to me.

Any suggestions?

Bob Snyder
Buffalo, NY

Hi Debbie,

I am doing research on Alabama Coby's and would like to know some more about the Coby's you mention in your message. What is your mother's name? Did her father, your grandfather, Robert Manuel Coby have any brothers or sisters that you all know of? Do you know where Robert was born? I have lots of questions and also maybe some connecting information for you. I am the gr-gr-granddaughter of William Coby/(Covey), who bore children with Julia White, one of whom was my gr-grandfather Henry Coby, who bore children with my gr-grandmother Beulah (?Johnson) Coby, a set of twin boys, one of which was my grandfather Elton T. Coby (his twin was Albert), whose son James E. Coby, Jr. is my father.

It's a small world after all and I suspect we may be related. I was just in Alabama yesterday and saw one of my cousins (found through this service) who is doing research in Stockton (Baldwin County) and other areas. Please be in contact so we can share more information and see if there is a connection.

Natasha N. Coby

Toni --

I had some fun in Yates Co. in September. Went there hunting for Lake/Rarick connections, and had only a bit of luck, but had great time with my Burt family which also come from Yates Co. I did find the following stuff:

My Isaac J. Lake, who m. Sally Coby, married twice more -- to Lucetta ______, and then to Mary W. Youngs. He had no children by Mary, but may have had a child with Lucetta. Isaac J. d. 31 Oct 1895 and is buried in Dresden, NY which is on the northwest corner of Seneca Lake.

Isaac J. appears to have had a brother: James F. Lake, who m. Rebecca Prestley. James F. was b. 1831 and d. 7 Sep 1909. Rebecca was b. 1839 and d. 22 May 1918. They had at least two children: Lucetta, b. 1878 in Penn Yan, and Isaac Jermin, who m. 29 Mar 1893 to Sarah Louis Harris.

I believe that Isaac J. and James F. were brothers, because Emily Lake m. Abel Rarick, the record notes that James F. and Rebecca were her aunt and uncle.

Don't know if this helps, but it might we worth following.

Bob Snyder

Hello Toni,

I recently have had a lead that indicates that my Isaac J. Lake may have been related to Welles Lake of Ontario Co., NY, but so far I haven't gotten anywhere with that lead, since Isaac, the son of Welles seems to have evaporated into thin air. I haven't had much of anything to go on with either Isaac J. Lake or his wife, Sally Coby. They are my g.g.g. grandparents, and I know they spent at least some time in the town of Milo, Yates Co., where they transferred land to their daughter and son-in-law, Abel and Emily (Lake) RARICK, who are my g.g.grandparents. Beyond that, I know nothing of their origins. Any suggestions?

Bob Snyder

Hi Toni,

Thanks for the response. The one thing about Isaac, son of Welles that worries me as a candidate for my Isaac J., is that I know the wife of my Isaac was Sally Coby. Nancy as the daughter-in-law to Welles doesn't fit -- unless Isaac married twice.

The thing I like about Welles' son is his 1822 birth year, which fits perfectly with an 1843 date for Isaac's daughter, Emily, who m. Abel Rarick.

I've never had any evidence that my Isaac came to Michigan, but then I don't know that he didn't either. Since a chunk of his family migrated this way, there's no reason to think he might not have, too.

Any reflections?

Bob

Doug,
Another summer us upon us since you wrote the note to which I'm responding. Have you had an opportunity to do any more research into your Coby family. This is indeed an uncommon surname, and any leads are welcome. Your Stephen, ca. 1840, is as close to finding something live as I've come in a long time. Do you know if Stephen had any siblings? Have you found him in any other records (census, land, probate, etc.)

My Emily Lake, the daughter of Isaac and Sally (Coby) Lake, was b. 1843, which puts her in the same time frame as your Stephen. that is excellent news to me.

Let me know if you've found anything more.
Bob Snyder
Midland, MI

My g-g-grandfather was Benjamin Coby, 1802/1814-1864. His wife was Mary Borden. He and his family lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His son William B. moved to Ohio @ 1855 with his wife Mary Jane Allen and her family. We have data on them and their descendents, but not on Benjamin's parents. He was born in Virginia according to the 1850 Census. Anybody have a clue?
