Cochrane/Cochran from North Ireland / Scotland

Hi - I am hoping someone out there may be able to help. My great-great grandmother was born Margaret Cochrane in Londonderry, North Ireland, in 1811. She married William James Moore around 1834 and they moved to Kane County, Illinois a few years later.

I am trying to find out more about the Cochrane line. A few Ancestry members have indicated that Margaret's parents were Samuel Cochrane and Janet McTaggart who were born and died in Wigtownshire, Scotland. However, since Margaret was born in North Ireland, I'm skeptical that Samuel and Janet are Margaret's parents. Can anyone shed some light into this?

Thanks,

Mike Mackie

Lexie Calhoun married John Cochrane on Feb. 8, 1921. She was from Black Diamond where her father Isaac Calhoun was a mill manager. Lexie Calhoun Cochrane had two brothers and three older sisters.
John Cochrane's father William was born in 1845 in Cavan County Ireland.

I believe there must be two Lexie Cochranes! But this one's maiden name was Calhoun.

I am somewhat confused as the Lexie that was married to my mothers uncle, Johnny Cochrane, was a Calhoun before she married Johnny. I believe Lexie had a brother or sister, but I don't remember any names. This was many years ago. Do you happen to remember a Susie that spent a lot of time with Lexie and Johnny in the 60's at their place on Lake Washington ?

Bill, my great-grandmother (Leona Maude Cochrane) is Lexie Cochrane's sister. I have Leona and Lexie's father - Wiley Cochrane b. Nov 8, 1866 (along with 11 brothers and sisters) and Wiley's father William Henry Cochrane b.Nov 8, 1831). Interestingly, William Henry Cochrane's wife Mary Hatfield is related to Benjamin Franklin. Not a direct descendent though.

I hope you find a descendent that is interested in his/her family history. My mother acquired a family bible in a similar way. It took a few months but I was able to find someone in that family that was very interested in having it. The reward of placing the bible in its proper place will be lots bigger than anything you'll get on ebay. An old family bible isn't worth much to someone with no connection to it but it can be priceless to a descendant. Good luck in your search.

I picked up a family Bible at an estate sale in Pittsfield, MA, that I believe belonged to William & Christina Cochrane. The inside cover is inscribed "William & (Christina) Cochrane, Perth 1884". The Bible is an 1882 edition. The next page says "Came to America April 30, 1891". A quick search shows that a William and Christina Cochrane lived in Peru, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. I planned to auction this on eBay, but would like this Bible to go to a descendant. There is also an old photo of 3 people in the Bible.

I bumped into your message realized your paintings are of my Cochran/e ancestors from Scotland/Ireland.

The young woman, named Eliza Harold, married John Cochrane of Paisley, Scotland on September 15, 1825 at St Catherine's Church in Dublin, Ireland. John Cochrane was born in 1803 and established his muslin lace warehouse in Dublin in the 1820s. He died on August 23, 1874 in Dublin and his wife died on May 30, 1884, age 80, in her hometown Carlow, Ireland. They had 12 children, including Robert Cochrane, born 1842 in Rathmines, near Dublin, Ireland. He moved to Melbourne, Australia in 1881-1883 and is probably the source of the paintings.

I'd love to see them if you have a copy/scan handy.

Reposting my interests, specifically two male Cochranes who went to America. Both were the sons of Thomas Cochrane (abt 1733-1804) and Ann Kerr (1733-1789). Both born Paisley, Renfrewshire although I cannot find the parish records. The boys came from a family of 10 children; all the others were girls apart from an earlier Thomas who must have died as a baby. The family bible says:

John Cochrane born 31 March 1758, died 17 Sept 1799 Savannah, Georgia from yellow fever.
Thomas Cochrane born 18 Jan 1774. Retired from manufacturing of crash lace in easy circumstances in Patterson NY.

("crash lace"?)

Nancy

There are quite a few of us trying to get in contact with whoever is interested.
I am descended from one of the other 15 children Robert George who married Florence Gertrude Buysman. Their son Robert Bernard Cochrane was my dad. He died in 1967.
Wow.
I would like to help in any way I can.
Jane

Hi!

I am doing research for a friend, and I think he is related to you. His G-G-Grandmother was Margaret Alice Cochrane, daughter to Richard George Cochrane. Margaret married Erik Leonard Roslin July 20, 1912, in London. Erik Roslin was born 1883 in Sweden. The couple lived in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Feb 1913-Dec 1915, where their son Alexander Karl Erik Hugo Roslin was born July 1, 1913. In 1922 they lived in London. Erik died in 1932, and in his probate the names Cecil Valentine Cochrane and Mabel Friman (wife of Karl Emil Friman) are mentioned.

Does these persons belong to your family? Any information appreciated!

Kind regards,

Pia Lindström
Piteå, Sweden
