Cockes in Brusnwick co Va in the 1790's went to Georgia

George Wray lived in brunswick co Va in 1769 when he bought land. There were many Cockes there at that time. We left Brunswick co Va in 1778 and went to Warren co NC and left there in 1789 and was in Wilkes co Ga by 1790. He went to Jackson co Ga in 1798. The area of Jackson co Ga he was living in became Clarke co Ga in 1801 when Clarke co Ga was formed. There were Cockes living there at that time. Would anyone have info about the Cockes that left Brunswick co Va and were in Georgia by the late 1790's and early 1800's? thanks, Ross

Sorry, I had never heard about your ggrandfather's untimely demise. I really don't know much about Pleasant D Cocke. He married into the Lindsey family which is my emphasis of research. I do know that his wife and children are on the 1910 Gregg Tx census without him. Perhaps if we studied Texas prison census records we would find him incarcerated for the shooting. He was either a very poor shot or he didn't intend to kill your ancestor. I wonder if a later newspaper might give an update on the incident. Ada Lindsey

thanks for responding...
No luck with anymore newspaper, I am now going through another opportunity as I call it, in Gregg County, to see if they can find some court doc , that might explain. Since Cocke appears in the 1900 june census, not sure he did time, anyway was hoping you might have an idea of what happened
again thanks for responding

William,

My grandfather was Jared Sanders Cocke of Bogalusa, La. i believe he was born in Southern Mississippi and raised in Patterson. He had two children with Annie Walters: Fannie Cocke Shelton and my dad Jared Sanders Cocke, Jr. I am just starting to begin my search on my dad's side of the family. Are we speaking of the same Jared S Cocke in your estimation? If so, I am curious as to how, unless my grandfather had other children that I don't know about. I have a picture that is supposed to be of Susan and I have been told that she was Cherokee Indian. She looks like an Indian in the picture. Benjamine was also a friend to my grandmother Alice Peavy Moseley's family. My grandfather John Moseley's mother was Mary Florence Smith, daughter of Frances P. and Susan Smith. All of them except Benjamine are buried in Marion County, Texas.

John Cocke and his father William (1744-1828) are chronicled in the book "The Life of Daniel Boone" by Dr. Lyman Draper. William was involved in several battles with Indians.

I am attempting to connect this William with the patriarch of the Cocke family in America, Richard (1597-1665). My line goes from Richard to William (1655-1693) to Elizabeth (1692-?) who married Lancelot Woodward (1682-1750). Their granddaughter Eliza married James R. Jordan. They are my maternal ggg-grandparents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These are my grandparents. They moved to Dallas in 1929 from Chicago. They came down by train with Betty Jean, Thomas Raymond's daughter from a first marriage that ended badly. Betty Jean was a child with Down's and died one year after the move at age 4. Josephine raised Betty Jean as her own. Josephine became the member of several groups in Dallas, The Women's Garden club, The Stitch and Chatter Club, and bridge club in South Oak Cliff part of Dallas. Thomas Raymond (known as T.R. Dorcey started a business in Dallas when he left Chicago. T.R. became a prominent member of the Dallas business world with Josephine by his side. He did charity work with Boys Club of America eventually becoming State Govenor of the Civitan Club, and sunday school teacher for Cliff Temple Baptist Church, and took care of his sister Gertrude by entering her in the Eastern Star Home in Dallas, an affiliation with the Civitans. They had one daughter, JoAnn. JoAnn moved her parents to Austin in the 1980's to take care of them. JoAnn married Charles E. Manske, they had four children Charles Steven, Paul Raymond, Debra Susan, And Cheryl Ann
Re: Benjamin F.Cocke

Don't get too excited, but "Benjamin Cocke" was a popular name among both main branches of Cockes who lived along the James River in early Virginia. Many Cockes from both lines migrated to TN/KY, then on to Texas between Mexican War and Civil War. My gggggrandma was Elizabeth Cocke (likely daughter of Thomas, sister of Colin) who married Edward Bland (son of Richard Bland II) and had an uncle and cousins named Benjamin Cocke. Among all Cockes, the name Benjamin likely is sourced in many intermarriages with the family of Benjamin Harrison (the President). Elizabeth's grandson, Colin Bland (aka Colin de Bland) was in the Mex War and settled in Fort Bend Co TX in 1840's and "disappeared" around 1853, perhaps in a flood (or perhaps murdered?). Elizabeth's nephew Colin Cocke married Sarah Fenn in Fort Bend Co TX in 1845 and was murdered same year by a local cattle (and slave) baron who was after his land. Search for "Collin Cocke" for newspaper accounts of that time. There seems to have been other Cockes there at the time. If you google for both Colins you'll see that both had reputations as "hot heads."

Perhaps double cousins to me and both Colins, were sisters Ann Augusta Bland and Rebecca Bland who married brothers Stephen Frederick Cocke and Thomas Robert Cocke. These Cocke brothers were born in KY (their parents had migrated there from VA), went back to VA for college, met and married Bland girls in VA, then the two couples migrated to Victoria, Fort Bend Co before 1850. A third sister, Margaret Emma ("Emma"), married George Harrison in Fort Bend Co. This Harrison was also likely a "Cocke cousin" as he was descended from Benjamin. These Cockes may be from the other branch from my Colin, but, like I said, both branches used the name Benjamin--because both intermarried with Harrisons.

Just thought I'd give you a taste of the loads of Cockes in VA, KY, TN, TX. If your Benjamin is from either line of the VA Cockes, it may be easier to track forward rather than backward. Let me know if you'd like more detail. Happy hunting to you, Cousins.

Hi Ann,
Thanks for responding. Does it say Mary Wren on the photo? Do you know her parents or siblings? I have a friend who is not in my direct line but is researching the AR Wrens too. Did your Wrens go straight to AR from NC or did they go to another state or states on the way? I have Indiana Cocke who married James William Wrenn and I have Ann Bowler(Boulware) who married Richard Cocke III. There must be some relation back there. It would be helpful to know which family line your Mary belongs to. I have over 100 Mary Wrens in my data base and 15 Mary Wrenn. What county is your Mary in on the 1860 census?
Thanks,
Shirley

The Henry referred to in the Stoney Creek Church was the son of David Clinton b. 1748. Several of his family members attended the church as it was first held in his home. The Henry married Rebecca Flannery and they had a son who was Henry J. After the death of his father Rebecca brought the unmarried children with her to Olive Hill, Kentucky. In abt. 1865 Henry J. the son moved his family to Vermillion Co. Illinois and assumed the name Coake.

There was a Henry Macon Cocke who sold his property in Miss and moved to Johnson Co.,Illinois in 1868 . He was the son of Henry Cocke b abt 1741 and Lucy Terrell according to Arnold Bradley's research.

In the church minutes Cocke, Cox and Cock are used to refer to members of the same family. When Henry J. came to Illinois for some unknown reason the family name changed This is verified by his sons civil war records. Both Henry J. and his are buried in Vermillion Co. Illinois.

Bradley's research was Thomas Cocke's lineage. David Clinton could be from Walter's son John or his family could have come to America to the Yadkin valley with a large group of settlers from Ireland and or Scotland. Many of David C's children tended to marry people with Irish names or Irish backgrounds.

I live in the county adjoining Cass Co. and I have a Cass Co book that includes cemeteries (I think) and I will look and see what I can find. I also know a man that lives in Atlanta that is very active in geneology and comes to the meetings in Marion County also. With the information you have provided, I will see what I can find for you and me. I am sure this is Susan's brother Benjamin and at one time Marion County and Cass County were all Cass County. We don't live far from the county line. From all indications, Benjamin must have been friends with my great grandparents on my grandmother's side of the family, the Peavy's as it appeared he bought the tract of land for G. L. Peavy and then deeded it to him. We still own that land today.

My grandmother was an avid reader and I have many of her books. My email is:
clovergirl1@embarqmail.com. Please email me if you like and I will send you a picture of the writing in the book.
Dear Aggie,

Who was your Grandmother and do you know why she might have had one of Sally's books? Both of Sally's grandmothers were raised in Lexington, as was her mother Phoebe Preston. Just wondering where the "connection" is.

Thanks so much for responding.

LB Smith

Yes, I posted that a while back. In going through my grandmother's things that were left to me, there were lots of books. I was able to only keep a few out of a couple hundred and I chose one because of the name: "The Good For Nothing". In the front, the book was inscribed:

Sally Lyle Preston Cocke
Oakland, Virginia
1887
One of my favorite things to do is buy old photos and try on the internet to get them to someone in the family or old books. Other than that I do not know her. My grandmother was born and raised in Rockbridge County, VA and later married a minister and they lived in several VA counties. Maybe she knew her, who knows.

Hello-I see you were seeking information on Sally L P Cocke. I also notice the date is 2004, so I am in hopes that this message reaches you. I am the caretaker of Oakland, the Cocke family estate, in Cumberland, VA. Sally has always been a curiosity to me. She was born, died and was buried here. I believe she was about 14 years old when she died, yet I have never seen any details regarding her passing.
If by chance you know more, would you please share it.
Thanks,
LB Smith
