Interested in the Assoication, but what does one get out of the group besides paying the ten dollars a year. My grandmother was a Cockreham. We did not spell Cockerham but Cockreham to distinguish the spelling from other distant family members who were not a direct line to our own; therefore; COCKREHAM.

I have done some research of the Cockerham's out of Surry county. Do you have any other names beside your father's? There were 2 lines of Cockerham's and I need some more names to find out which line you are looking for.

Mary Van Buren Welch Cockerham

I have been researching my Loyd family for many years, and just came upon the possibility that Mary Van Buren Welch Cockerham may be my first cousin once removed. She married Butler Monroe Cockerham.

She may be the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of my maternal great-grandparents, John C. Hughes and Mary Elizabeth Wortham. Mary married John David Cockerham after John C. Hughes died, making John David Cockerham my step-great-grandfather.

I have not found a marriage for Sarah Hughes and a Welch or a VanBuren Welch, only for a David Elbert Burns. There is the possibility that Mary V. Welch was adopted by Sarah and David Burns. One of Mary Cockerham's children is named David Elbert Cockerham, possibly after her father.

Three of the Cockerham childrens' birth certificate records lists their mother's maiden name as Mary VanBuren Welch.

If anyone has any insight into the lineage of Mary VanBuren Welch, I would greatly appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

My name is Daniel Cockerham of Maryland.It seems that all Cockerhams came here in 1666(refrence:houseofnames)from England Devonshire,also check out info on the village of Cockerham Abbey in Lanceshire England.Obviously we all have to be related down to Sir Robert Cockerham's blood line.

Sorry the message before did not list the family tree as typed. Joseph William and Frances Lyons Cockerham children

Warren Cockerham
Willie James Cockerham
Linda Ann Cockerham
Howard Hardin Cockerham
Jerry Ray Cockerham
Anthony Shane Cockerham (Tony)
Paul Larry Cockerham (killed in car wreck 1967)
Robert Lee Cockerham

Children of these listed on previous post. Willie is my dad and we live in East Bend,NC (actually Smithtown,NC no township). My grandfather started a commercial fishing lake in the early 60's. He purchased the land from a Poindexter. The spring that supplied the community with water in early years is on this land. My father holds fishing tournaments at Joes's Fish Lakes (my granfather bought stocked with fish). My Granfather's family was a hearty group who worked very hard every day. They all worked in tobacco fields growing up. Most of his sisters were big and hearty and could hold their own.

I hope this helps and if anyone knows more please respond

I am related to Cockerhams from Galax, VA. I am the grandaughter of Earnest Cockerham (1922-1972), who was the son of Greely Elem Cockerham (1894-1947) and Cora May Bennett (1893-1979), Greely was the son of Andrew D Cockerham (1869-1953) and Amanda Isabell Lowe (1873-1967). Andrew was the son of Samuel Cockerham (1840-1927) and Ruth Smith (b about 1850). I believe Samuel was the son of William Cockerham (b 1814) and Nancy Lowe (b about 1821). Let me know who some of your relatives are and we can find the common links.

Cockerham/Cochran - how common are the ancestors?

I have ancestors that were Cockerhams who settled in Lunenberg, Virginia. I have a friend whose last name is Cochran, but from just doing some preliminary research, it looks like the name Cochran might have descended from Cockerham, and Cockrum before it. My friend is from Virginia and I am from Louisiana. Are all of the Cockerhams and Cochrans related back to the 17th century? I am wondering if it is worth the time to try to create a tree for her and research back to see if there is a common ancestor. Thanks for any help.

She married a Crosley then Roy "Ducky" McDonald. They lived in Brazil, Indiana and northern Indiana. My wife is desperately seeking info on the Cockerhams. Anything above sound familiar?

(08/21/2010) Hi, sorry it has taken me forever to respond.. but yes I do need your help. Well to start off, Jennifer and I were in a relationship back in elementary school in Louisiana when her father was stationed there.. this was like a looonng long time ago..lol. i believe we were in the 4th or some where around there when we became friends.. anyways as the military has it she moved as as well as I. Then I was amazed that she was in my math class in High School, Ellison High in Killeen , TX. I ended up visiting her family along with her grand parents here in Fort Hood at one time.. was invited to stay for dinner.. needless to say I really loved and respected her family. They were always very warm and welcoming towards me. Anyways and time goes by, you start to wonder where life took its turns, & one tries to reconnect with that special person.. So if you could please attempt to contact her or provide me with any info you may have I would certainly appreciate it.. you can pass my email along or contact me how you like.. Mike.vera@us.army.mil

Thank you for any information you can provide.. and if you get the chance.. tell her parents Hi for me.. Mike Vera from Fort Polk says hi.. (remind them i was Jennifers BF) ..lol..

Thanks again

Mike

Their daughter Jacqueline is my husbands mother (she married a Shew). Martha is his great-grandmother also. Jackie calls PV Valley and says he went by that name alot. He was born in 1960 so you guys are around the same age. I believe I have found PV. I have his death certificate from Florida He was remarried and fell off of a roof in 1945. Please send me your email if you would like a copy. I do not have a tree here, but have one on my computer I can send in PDF. My email is shewbedo@nc.rr.com. Please let me know what you may have on the family.

JACOB COCHRAN/COCKRAM b abt 1800 who married CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA may have been the son of WILLIAM COCKRAM/COCKERHAM, who is listed in the 1810 Spartanburg Co SC census, and witnessed a land deed in Spartanburg SC in 1812.

CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA (maiden name unknown) was a granddaughter of SUSANNAH, wife of DAVID BRUTON/BREWTON Sr of Spartanburg SC (but CELIA probably from a previous marriage?). I have not been able to find out who CELIA's parents were. However, SUSANNAH left CELIA'S children property in her estate:

--1825 March 28 Spartanburg SC; SUSANNAH BREWTON (Spartanburg) to great granddaughter REBECCA ADELINE COCHRAN; for love and affection give a feather bed and teester, bedstead, 8 counterpins (counterpanes?), 8 bedquilts, an oven leds (?), a pine table, an oven and lid, a frying pan, a cupboard, 2 pewter plates, 5 earthen plates, 2 pitchers, 2 mugs, 6 earthen bowls, a spinning wheel, a black chest, and a set of canapies (canopies?). SUSANNAH BREWTON keeps the stuff until she dies. Witnessed : Joseph Woodruff, Harrison Woodruff, and Thomas Woodruff III. Signed SUSANNAH BREWTON's mark. Wit. Oath Nov 4, 1825 Thomas Woodruff III to Philip Brewton. Recd. Nov 12, 1825.

Source: South Carolina Deed Abstracts Book A-T 1785-1827 by Albert Bruce Pruitt.

--Will of SUSANNAH (maiden name unknown) BRUTON 1838 Spartanburg SC: I, SUSANNAH BRUTON, of the state and district aforesaid, being of sound and disposing mind and understanding, do make my last will and testament in manner and form following. Viz: I give and devise unto my great-granddaughter SUSANNAH E.B. COCKRAM (COCHRAN) of the State and district aforesaid, the tract of landwhereon I now live, containing seventy acres more or less. And also, all my personal Estate of whatever kind in trust for the following uses and purposes toViz: For the sole and separate use of her mother CELIA COCKRAN during her natural life free from and without the control of her husband JACOB COCHRAN and after the death of said COCHRAN for the use and benefit of the said SUSANNAH E. B.COCHRAN her heirs and assigns forever.

--I nominate constitute and appoint my said great-granddaughter SUSANNAH E. B. COCHRAN executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me, ratifying and confirming this my last will and testament.

--In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of April 1835. Signed sealed and acknowledged, SUSANNAH X BRUTON her mark By the Testatrix in our presence and by me Subscribed in her presence
CP Woodruff and A P Woodruff

CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA married JACOB COCKRAM/COCHRAN around 1815, probably in Spartanburg SC, and had seven children, as per later census records and records from Spartanburg:
SUSANNAH E.B. COCKRAM/COCHRAN, b 1817-1820;
JAMES D. COCKRAM/COCHRAN b abt 1818;
REBECCA ADELINE COCKRAM/COCHRAN b abt 1822;
MELISSA COCKRAM/COCHRAN b abt 1830;
EBER COCKRAM/COCKRAN b abt 1832
TWO OTHER SONS COCKRAM/COCHRAN b 1820-1820

CELIA/SELAH/CECILIA COCKRAM/COCHRAN is listed in the 1830 and 1840 Spartanburg SC census, a mid-aged woman living alone with 4 boys and 3 girls; in 1830 her grandmother SUSANNAH BRUTON was living with her. It is unknown if JACOB COCKRAM/COCHRAN died or abandoned her, or if they were divorced.

1850 census Chattooga Co GA shows SELA COCKRAM age 55, REBECCA age 22, MELISSA age 20, EBER age 18; they were living next door to JAMES D.
Re: minnie cockerham

Hi, I'm Minnie's great-granddaughter. My grandfather was Tex (Melton) and my dad was Marvin Earl. I've heard a few family stories from my grandmother Anne Fletcher. I visited Minnie in Houston with my brother when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I vaguely remember Boots. I would dearly love to become connected to this side of my family. My grandmother always maintained there is a printed Fletcher family history out there somewhere. I would love to be able to access this if you have any information on it. Please respond and let me know anything at all. I'm very interested in getting more information about everyone.
