What's the proof of illegimate? I interpreted it as Lucy dying in childbirth, and John C. ending up in John M. & Sally's 1950 census record (grandparents). No marriage record for the former, but that was often true. NB. John C. would have been the son (legitimate or otherwise of John L., not John M.). What does the source say?
