My name is Chris Code (age 57) and I live in Devon, England. My dad (87) is Frank (Francis) Code and comes from Liverpool irish stock. We have little information about his family except that his dad's (James) family came from newry (? spelling) in Northern Ireland and his mum (Rafferty) came from Dublin. They came over, according to dad, during one of the potato famines and settled in Liverpool (the 'Boston' of England with large Irish settlement)
While I've always though of Code as an Irish name (according to something I read 'Code' is Celtic for 'cobbler's glue', so like Butcher, Smith, Thatcher, Fowler, etc. it's a 'trade name').
It may be that Codes wewre originally of Anglo-saxon origin as there appears to be an English group. Around here tehre are Coades of Cornish (Celtic) origin and I recently saw a plaque in Dartmouth (an old port near here) to Robert Code who was weathy burger of the town who in the reign of Henry VIII left 11 houses to the parish. It may be that Codes were of anglo-saxon stock who were 'settled' in Ireland during that 500 years 'occupation' of Ireland by the English, and became Irish over time. As you probably know, N Ireland was forcibly 'colonised' by Scots during the reign of the 'English' (Dutch actually) king William of Orange. Hence the Presbetarian majority in N Ireland now.
I was in Sydney for about 6 years and these' lots of Codes there, probably convicts ('political prisoners;') from Ireland over the last 200 yrs or so.
I'm an academic and occassionally need to check on who is 'citing' the things I write in academic journals. I'm always coming across a prominent American pysiologist Charles Code - who gets lots of citations of his work.
So, are there lots of Codes in Ohio?
