Hello. I was researching the name Coeburn and saw this. My name is Rick Coeburn. There was mention of a Samuel Coeburn. I have an uncle named Samuel. My father was Richard Coeburn, born in Bluefield, WV. He had brothers named, Samuel, Sonny, Buck and half sisters Betty and Gene. I was born in Wytheville, VA. Do you all have any additional information on the Coeburn line?

Yes, I do believe there were more than one Kizzie. Let Gary know that I just recently ran across this census information in the 1860 Hancock Co. Tenn. Census:

Kizsiah 13 F b. Tenn

Manda 6 F b. Tenn

I do believe that this Manda is Amanda, being that she would have been 6 yrs old in 1860. Notice also the Kizsiah? Probably another Kizzie in the family! Apparently a popular name to run in the family...having a sister with it....naming a daughter it.....& having a daughter-in-law with it.

Let me know if Gary thinks I'm on the right track with Amanda here.

Hope to talk to Gary again soon. Oh, I also have copied a few pix to send him....one of g-grandma Kizzie Palmer Coeburn & one of my Granny, Bessie Coeburn Johnson.

I'm sorry for the late reply. My g-g-grandmother was Rosa Fouts b. July 1842 in Ashe Co. NC. md. William Johnson. Her parents were George Fouts b. 1812 d. 1884 and Lucinda Phillips b. 1822. Is there a connection? My mother has told me she has relatives in Ohio.

How awesome to find someone who is searching also. My husband Gary Coeburn is the grandson of Oscar and Opal Coeburn. We live in Wise, VA. We have been wondering who Elijah was. Great to find out he was William and Amanda's son. We do not know where William is buried. Amanda is buried in Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, VA along with Oscar's son Robert Wiley who died at birth and his daughter Jewel who died at 9 years old. Amanda died in 1933 at the age of 76 years. William and Amanda are Gary's great-grandparents. Oscar has one daughter living in Pennington Gap, VA (Norma Eldridge). She has a lot of the history and we have recently been trying to "stumble" through some of it. Norma recalls meeting Kizzie at the home of Jannie Coeburn Delp (William and Amanda's daughter). Where there two Kizzie's?? William and Amanda's daughter and Kizzie Palmer who married Elijah????

Elijah was born in Mar. 1875 in KY d. abt 1906. He married Kizzie Palmer. Their children were Bessie E. b. 7-20-1906 d. 3-4-1980 in Letcher Co., KY & Simon b. abt 1903 d. 9-26-1946 in Harlan Co.,KY. Kizzie later married Lawson Nave.

It is my understanding that Coeburn Mountain, Guest Mountain, Gist Mountain and Wise Mountain are all the same place. I am looking for information that either establishes or not that Samuel Coeburn stopped there or stayed for a few years while enroute from near Charlotte NC to Kentucky. I am also looking for Samuels brothers , Jacob and Isaac... it could have been them, i guess.

There is also a Coeburn NC, near Asheville NC. I am attempting to check that out too. There is a Coburn Va, also... more of Samuels family.

I am curious about your Fouts. I also have Fouts. They came from the east to VIrginia then on to Morgan Co Ohio. Please e mail me at Pogo207@aol.com about them.

I actually live close to Coeburn, VA, but I have no idea how it got it's name. I will try and research to see what I can find out. I have never heard of Gist Mountain, is it in Wise Co. also? Thanks for the name of Samuel Coburn, like I said in my post, William and Amanda are my stumbling blocks on the Coeburn side. All the info I have on the Coeburn's are in my previous post.

There is a town called "Coeburn" in Wise Co. Va. Do you have any idea how the town got it's name? Also Gist Mountain is called Coeburn Mountain. Any idea about that? I expect The Wise co. Coeburns are related somehow to the Samuel Coburn that settled in Lawrence (Floyd) co, Ky. I'd be interested in your thoughts and research on this.

Thomas Coeburn and Joshua Cockfield

If anyone is interested I have copies of the wills of Joshua Cockfield who died 1717 who married Elizabeth Hudson and that of Thomas Coeburn died 1724 who married Elizabeth Hudson after the death of Joshua Cockfield. I have not had time to transcribe them but will send copies to anyone who requests them.

This Thomas Coeburn is definitely not Thomas Coeburn who died 1697 the father of Cisely who married John Baldwin.
