Could Coelos be a derivative of Coelho?

Boy am I confused now....

My mother's maiden name is Coelos. I am told her grandfather emigrated from Paris France (somewhere between 1883 & 1915). My mom has always thought this was a Greek name, but now I wonder...

I have found it extremely difficult in finding information on this name....I am curious if the spelling was changed somewhere in my line (we pronounce Coelos 'Say-loce' [long o]) Is this how you all pronounce Coelho (say-low)???

In addition, my grandfather's middle name was Manual, which I have found several references to Manual Coelho's on this board...all this time we've been thinking it's Greek, but now perhaps it is Portuguese?

I am REALLY confused now...can anyone please shed some light?
Thanks a bunch,
Jessica
