Just to confirm that the spelling of my family line is also Coell.

I assume that your John Coell and family were the ones living in Lindsey Street, Epping in 1841.

It would seem likely that we have a link with these two, My John Coell died in Theydon Garnon Workhouse, he was last recorded on 1861 census. The spelling is Coell and not Cowell, as is all I have seen so far.

Re: Louisa Coell

Hi,

Coell is either a form of Cole (diminutive of Nicholas or black in old English), or Cowell (dweller at the cow hill).

It is possible that we have common ancestors. The problem is the spelling of the surname. There is a family on IGI headed by Edward and Mary Cowell. They were born in 1755 and 1758 respectively in Epping. Their children, all born in Epping, include possibly your ancestor John Cowell born 1782 and possibly my ancestor Thomas Coel born 1786. To confuse matters some other children are shown with the surname Coell. Without seeing any of the original records I'm not sure how accurate this all is but as Theydon Garnon is next to Epping I'm sure your Louisa is related.

To complicate matters a relative of mine has found a baptism entry for a Charles Cowel at the parish church of St Laurence, Upminster. Date of birth 30 March 1810, christened 29 April 1810, parents Thomas and Hannah Cowel.

My g.g.g.grandmother Louisa Coell born 1821 in Theydon Garnon, Essex her father John Coell born 1782.
She married John Reed also from Theydon Garnon and died in London on the 18th November 1894.

As most of the Coells seem to be from Essex is this one big extended family.

Where does this name come from?

From the 1851 census I have discovered that Charles Coell was born c1811 in Upminster, Essex. He also had a daughter called Sophia born 1841 in Sunbury, Middlesex.

Coell - Essex / East London

From my researches it would appear that the majority of English Coells lived either in Essex or the East End of London. Although the surname is fairly rare I am aware that over the years this has no doubt been corrupted e.g. Coel, Coal, Cole, Cowl, Cowel and Cowell.

My line includes:-

Thomas Coell - Labourer born late 1700s / early 1800s, his son Charles Coell - Gardener born early 1800s who married Sophia Slater (born 1803 High Street, Poplar) in September 1840 at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich (then Kent). They had one son Thomas Edward Coell born April 1845 in Ford Street, Bow, and possibly a daughter. By 1871 Thomas is living with his mother, now a widow, in Devonshire Street, Mile End Old Town. Thomas worked as a dock clerk in the London Docks. In November 1883 he married Alice Mary Ann Deacon (born 1861 Alverstoke, Hampshire).

They had 4 children; Bertram Edward Coell born 1885, Leonard Thomas Coell born 1887, Grace Coell born and died 1895 and Dorothy Alice Coell born 1896 all in West Ham.

I can go forward from here but I really want to go backwards starting with Charles and his father Thomas. Hopefully someone out there has a connection.
