According to what I've put together, William's parents were William and wife Chanea Copher born ca 1754...siblings were Henry, Robert, and Celia with possibly Margaret and Chanea..My info has William (father of the Illinois Cophers)born ca 1785 in NC....with his children being born from 1813 to 1836 in NC and TN.

These Cophers are children of William Copher and Rebecca Boals Copher of Moore County N.C. They moved to west Tennessee in about 1820 timeframe. William died ca 1842 and children went to Illinois and Arkansas. I do not show an Elizabeth among the children.

Wondering if anyone on this list is researching the Cofer/Copher line in Williamson Co., Il. Appears to be brothers, Robert, James, Henry, Is(h)am,Joshua are there ca 1860. They state they were b. in NC. Some of their children are b. in Tn. I'm wondering who the parents are and where they were born, married, died. I have an Elizabeth Cofer b. ca 1804 in NC. She married in Tn. ca 1824, but I've never been able to connect her to parents or siblings. She is also in so. Ill. about 1870 as are several of her children

Thanks for any info

The info I have on the Boones, is that Daniel Boone is my dad's great grandfather like 10 times removed. Unfortunately this info was passed down from my Uncle Jack (Copher) and heis now deceased, and my dad is the only left of his immediated family, and he never knew the family history, and has Alzheimer's, so I'm trying to fill in the blanks for him.

You can contact me at j.copher@sbcglobal.net.

I'd really like to know more about the Cophers', Coffers' and Cofers' and our origins from the Zolikofers' from which we are all descended from in Switzerland.

Do you have any information on Elizabeth "Betsey" Shetley who married Henry Cobb and lived next door to Peter Shetley in Lincoln County NC and Gwinett County GA? She has been reported as being the sister to Peter but I believe she was actually the daughter of Peter. Trying to prove or disprove this theory. I also believe Georg is the son of Peter and possibly living near Elizabeth in 1850/60.

Woodrow Wilson Cofer grave marker

While walking through an abandoned church cemetery in White County, Arkansas, I noticed this marker because he was military and because the surname is uncommon.

As a researcher I thought it may be valuable to someone. I'm not related to or researching the Cofer surname. The image is just a token of appreciation for other researcher who helped me in the past with my own roots.

If this Board is gatewayed to the List, click on the link and it will take you to the board where you'll be able to view the photo of the grave marker. It may be used by anyone in your research.

Regards,

Sherri Schaefer [Bagby]
Bagby Admin
www.bagby.org

The Zollicofer information I have seen was wihout documentation and I could find no evidence of a connection to the Cofers. Much of it was not logical.
An example is the claim that Jacob Christopher Zollicoffer born 1686 was the father of Thomas Withers Coffer born 1699.
Check the math.
My aunt, Denverc@aol.com will be glad to share information on George Cofer if you contact her by e mail.

I have a George Coffer born 1768 in North Carolina. He is my many Great Grandfather. This is where my line stops. Unfortunately not enought time in the day to play!
As far as I can tell he had 6 daughters, 2 sons. One was my many great gradfather, his name was James Coffer (Cofer) born in McMinn Co. TN in 1793, dies 1866 was married to Elizabeth 'Eliza' Clark born 1806 in Roane Co. TN. Does any of this look familiar to your Coffer's? Cofer's?

Lacey and Ann are my great-great-great-grandparents. I would love any information you would be willing to provide about George Cofer and his ancestors. Particularly, whether it can be proved one way or another if these Cofers came from the Zollicoffers. The information I've gathered on this site tells me that Ann's father is George, George's father is Thomas Withers Coffer (1699-1791), and Thomas's father is Jacob Christopher Zollicoffer (1686-1779.) Is this the information you have? Do you have any documentation either way?
Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: Cofer of Itawamba Miss. and Yell Co Arkansas

I saw your posting on ancestry.com. I am a male Cofer. We have established our ancestry line from a John Cofer who immigrated in the mid 1600's. He first landed in VA, but then moved to Portobacco MD, after he had paid for his voyage. He was brought in by Nathaniel Pope of Westmoreland Co. VA, whose daughter married into the Washington line from which George came.
Our John had three sons, John, Thomas and Francis. Thomas seemed to disappear sometime after the birth of a daughter and a brand registration was reported. Francis moved to VA and eventually settled in Fairfax Co. One of his descendants served in the Pohick Church and owned a pew just behind George Washington.
John II was my ancestor, and I do not have any particular famous reports for any of us.
My portion of John's descendants (John, John, Henry, Matthew) lived in MD until abt 1800 and then moved for a short time to Abbeville SC before settling in Wilkes Co. GA. Matthew's sons John, Thomas Boswell and Joseph Benjamin. (don't you love how all the names are reused) were awarded land in Wilkes Co beginning in 1813. Thomas seemed to live between Wilkes and Abbeville. Joseph B remained in Wilkes for the rest of his life and most of the Cofer's still there are his descendants. Thomas Bosell's son Matthew moved to Yell Co. Arkansas as well as other spots in Arkansas. My line from this John stayed in Wilkes Co and some are still there.
If you are of the Tennessee line, you may not fit our line, but wanted to give you this info just in case.
We have used DNA of the male Cofer's from each of the three lines and determined that each is of the same parentage.
If you would like to check out you line with our program, I can give you the information or you can go to the FamiltyTreeDNA.com and get information. It is a very simple test. It uses a cotton swab to collect DNA. It has to come from a male descendant that is named Cofer.
Hope this helps you to find more information on your Cofer line.
Debs Cofer
Yes, I am male. My father left GA about 1900 with his mother and stepfather. His father was killed in an accident shortly after he was born. To complete my line, the John shown in GA had my great grandfather, Matthew, then his son Walter, who was killed, then my dad Walter Matthew.

Cofer of Itawamba Miss. and Yell Co Arkansas

I've read through many of the Cofer posts made here the last 9 years and haven't found any link to any of the Cofer families mentioned, so here's the Info I have on MY Cofer family line; let me know if it fits anything you have !!

My Mother's maiden name was Cofer, her first name was Goldie (believed to have been GolaVee originally), deceased 12-28-05. Her Father was Robert Mac Cofer b 1873, m Doramae Bullard b approx 1885. His father was Robert H. Cofer, b Mississippi yr unk. Mother was Nancy S (Smith?),
b N.Carolina yr unk.

It looks like Robert H. Cofer's Father is listed in public records as Martins Cofer b 1811, m Sarah M. b 1818

The family seems to have first appeared in Itawamba Miss. and moved to Dardanelle Arkansas, or Yell Co Arkansas.

My Grandfather, Robert Mac had at least one Sister and one Brother according to 1880 Census info. Their names were listed as Hellen A b 1873, and Joseph C b 1878. Both Hellen and Joseph seem to just disappear. Although, in the 1930 Census, a Joseph Cofer does show up in Cameron Texas and is shown to be approx 50 years old w a birthdate estimated in 1880. It's close, but not sure.

Certainly Martins and Sarah Cofer had more children than just Robert H. So where are they?? And did Martins have Brothers/Sisters?? Anyone out there know anything about this clan?

The more recent offspring, starting with Robert Mac and DoraMae , ended up in Yeager Oklahoma. Their children attended Pecan Grove School, and many of Robert Mac and DoraMae's kids stayed their entire lives in the Holdenville Ok area. Some migrated to California and ended up in a hellhole called Avenal.

Currently there is only one remaining child of Robert Maac and DoraMae. Their youngest, James, is still living in Holdenville. He has a son, daughter, and several grandchildren as well.

The California gang (4 of them, 5 if you count James...he and his family lived in Monterey for several years before returning to Holdenville) included GolaVee (Goldie)b 1919, m Willard Majors b 1918 Holdenville OK., divorced in 1958.,
Goldie remarried in 1970 to Frank Sutton. Then Goldie's older sister Leona Mae b unk, m Aubrey Brock of Ada Ok also went to Ca. to Avenal. The had a brother also in Avenal, his correct first name eludes me, but he was known as "Dock". There was the 4th sibling, another brother, that ended up in Atwater Ca.

Have I shared too much? Probably, but is there anyone out there related to us?

I saw a mention in one listing about three Cofer brothers ending up in Mississippi in the early 1800's, but no first names were mentioned. Could Martins (Martin) been one of them???

Dale

Re: Cofer Family

Saw the messages about Willis Cofer/wife Nancy. I believe they had a son named Robert Mack, among their several children. Robert was married to Dora Mae Bullard. I found Robert Mack shown in the 1910 census in Arkansas (listed simply as Mack Cofer), and about half of his, and Dora's children are listed, but it does show an adult female (Nancy) living in the home as well. It stated that Nancy was approximately 65 years in age. This makes Nancy born around 1845 and possibly 18-20, or so years younger than Willis. If the numbers crunch correctly, Nancy and Willis married when Nancy was quite young... maybe 16 ?

I don't know how many kids Willis and Nancy had, but if he disappeared around 1867 or 1868, she had them all before the age of 22 or 23.

As for Robert Mack and Dora Mae Cofer, of their children, my mother was the youngest daughter, born in 1919. She could barely remember living in Dardanell Arkansas, but recalls their years living in Yeager Oklahoma and attending Pecan Grove school. These small communities are just north of Holdenville Ok.

I too wonder what was up with the cofer family !!! My mother told me that she thought that her dad (Robert Mack) had changed their last name spelling from Coffer to Cofer when they moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma. That may or may not be true, but she said she always thought, and had heard, that he was hiding from something... she thought it may have possibly been something to do with the KKK. Anyways, she grew up not knowing much of anything about the rest of the Cofer mob; just her immediate family. Of all the children of Robert Mack and Dora Mae, now only one still survives; James Cofer in Holdenville Ok.

My generation of Cofer descendants in this line is pretty scattered, and many of us have little to no contact with each other. My Mother had a sister and a brother living here in California. Her sister died in 1999 or 2000, and her brother died earlier on; I seem to think it was in the mid 80's. She then had only the one sibling left in Holdenville, so most of the family I knew was gone, and the California clan only produced 1 offspring per pair. My Mom's brother produced the only offspring that had the Cofer name; her name is Sally, and is unmarried to my knowledge. My Mom married a Majors from Holdenville in 1938, and her older sister that lived here in Ca. married a Brock from Ada Ok.

James Cofer in Holdenville had 2 children, one son and a daughter. The son has a family of his own, too.
