I've just received George Gardner's Death Certificate.

His Death Certificate records his father as James Gardner (of England) and his mother as Amelia Pavat (of England). These are 'my' George Gardner's parents, although Amelia's surname is more commonly spelled Pavitt. The informant is Helen Gardner, and George's address is given as 3708 Maple ave. His date of death is May 12 1914.

The Certificate also gives his Occupation as 'Clerical' (and he was the rector of the Hearts Content, Newfoundland Church of England from 1861 to 1878), and states a 'Contributory' factor in his death was 'Overwork'. The Certificate also confirms his burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

But, the Certificate states his date of birth as March 10 1846, indicating George Gardner to be 10 years younger than he really was. 'My' George Gardner was baptized in St. Mary, Luton, Bedfordshire on April 8 1838. Likely, he was actually born March 10 1838.
I don't think you have the right George Gardner. Like I said I just started researching Helen Coffield a few weeks back, but according to the 1910 Census for Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, George was born in 1844 in England, came to the US in 1850 which would make him 6 years old.

Then again it could be the same, it looks like this is a 2nd marriage for both of them & they have been married for 12 years in 1910.

Still doing more research.

In California, Voter Registrations, 1900-1968; Ancestry has the following entry for 1922:

Gardner, Mrs. Helen, nrs, 3708 Maple av, DS

Looks like Helen remained at 3708 Maple av. I'm not sure what the 'nrs' means, but maybe 'nurse'? DS means Declines to State (see top right hand corner of page).

Maybe Helen was working in a hospital the night of the 1920 Census...

Yes, George's age has been one inconsistency which is why we're hoping for more proof.

Have a look at George and Helen (Coffield) Gardner in the 1900 Census of Los Angeles. George gives his year of immigration as 1882 and states he is naturalized.

There is a naturalization for a George Gardiner (formerly of England) on May 22 1888 in the Superior Court of the County of Los Angeles (but George clearly signs as 'Gardner').

Then have a look at the 1888 Voters Registration in the City of Los Angeles for the George Gardner who was naturalized on May 22 1888, and who registered on May 22 1888. I seem to recall Ancestry has him indexed under 'Gardiner', although the actual registration is clearly 'Gardner'. Now he's 48 years old, implying a year of birth about 1839 to 1840.

I think when George Gardner married the much younger Helen Coffield, he shaved a few more years off his age. My George Gardner already had a pattern of understating his age by 2 to 4 years, and he may have increased the understatement when he met Helen.

Do you have other information about George Gardner (perhaps from stories within your family)?

Thank you.

Wallace and I believe the husband of Helen Coffield to be George Gardner baptized Apr 8 1838 St Mary, Luton, Bedfordshire, England; married Frances Marrett November 29 1861 Harbour Grace, Newfoundland; and divorced Frances Marrett May 4, 1894 City of Los Angeles. George and Frances had one child, daughter Isabell who married George Ellis Allen June 10 1889 in the City of Los Angeles. Wallace and I believe George Gardner was naturalized May 22 1888 in the Superior Court of the County of Los Angeles with George Ellis Allen attesting to George Gardner's 5-year residence and 'good morale character'.

But, we're having difficulty proving that it was this George Gardner who married Helen Coffield. Does anyone have information to help prove our premise (e.g. a Death Certificate, Will, Family Bible, etc.)?

I have a lot more information about George Gardner, and his ancestors.

George Gardner. From 1900 and 1910 Federal census records, was living in Low Angeles, California. Based on these census records, was born in England in either 1844 or 1848. Arrived in America in either 1850 or 1882. Married in either 1898 or 1900. In 1900 was a US Land Office Attorney and wife Helen had had no children at that time.
COFIELDs of GA TX

Am seeking the ancestors of John G. COFIELD (B. 30 Dec 1813 in GA; M. ca 1839 to Eleanor Gray WHITE B. 29 Feb 1822 NC D. Sept 1860 Houston Co, GA) I have found records of this family in both Houston Perry Counties. I was told many years ago by an elderly cousin that the family came from NC or SC to GA and then to Red River Co, TX. William and John seem to be two names which are repeated often down the generations. Another cousin stated that originally in England, the name was spelled SCOFIELD but the "S" was dropped when they arrived in this country. Whatever help you would be willing to provide or suggest would be greatly appreciated as to where to look next.

I recently posted a summary "Abstract" of the narrative I am working on for Joseph N Coffield. Hope to finish the full story sometime in December and then will post it also in my Birdsell Family Tree. The newest info is that Joseph's marriage record contains the name of his father. The image is poor, but looks like "Jno Coffield Esq". If so, this is almost sure to be John C Coffield who married Martha Marchant in St. Louis in 1830, and who is living in Clark County, Ohio (married to Nancy Tenney) in 1850.

ABT 1866 d. 6 Aug 1921 to their son Jacob (b. 24 May 1814) and Sarah Jane Hicks. The death certificate, which I also have, is for the second Adam.

The earlier Adam 1806-1849 was my g-g-g grandfather by his first marriage to Ruth Wetzel. He appears in the 1830 (Ohio Co.) and 1840 (Marshall Co.) censuses. Their son Absalom (ABT 1831-1882) m. Sarah Jane Echols; they were the parents of my g-grandfather James Adam Coffield (1859-1938), m.
Will I ever find Ellen Coffield, born Inverness Scotland in 1903?

I have been trying to find out what happened to my Grandmother's sister - Ellen Coffield. I have her birth certificate, born: 6 Green Row, Inverness in 1903 to parents Timothy Coffield & Mary Jane Butler. My Grandmother (also Mary Jane) was born later in the Black Isle Poorhouse in 1906. The family spent many years moving around the North East of Scotland receiving poor relief. In 1909 Timothy died and it is likely that his wife Mary Jane gave her daughters up for adoption. I found my grandmother on the 1911 census living with another family (no name change)in Elgin but have yet been unable to trace Ellen. There are no Scottish marriage or death records for her and I have spent many years checking emmigration records - she appears to have disappeared. Is this possible?

Having reached a dead end and run out of ideas completely thought I would take the plunge and ask for help - any ideas...anyone?

Many thanks!

Gresham Coffield who likely came from England settled first in Elizabeth City VA (near Norfolk) in about 1632. There was a somewhat later group up in the northern part of VA and I believe an even later group landed in NY. I would guess most living descendants came from Southern Virginia, in or near what used to be Nansemond County. Some stayed there, a bunch went to NC by 1760 and then some of those split to GA, KY about 1780 and then everywhere. My Grandfather was John Coffield lived most of his life in WA. His father had gone from NC to IL in 1860. I do not know of any Cecil Coffields, sorry; but keep looking.

Bill

Here are some of my Misc. Notes:
One may speculate that Gresham Coffield was connected to the Gresham family, likely through his mother. Sir John Gresham, knight of St. Giles Parrish London, son to Sir Thomas, was the more famous of the family in the late 16th century. I have not found a female Gresham, born 1550-1600 who married anyone with a Coffield sounding name—in fact none closer than Cooper.
A Margaret Cofield of Norwich, was left a legacy by Valentyne Pory of Yarmouth, Norfolk. “To Margaret Cofeild ‘whom he minded if God had lengthened his life to have married’ all his good, etc. Sworn by Henry Hill and Alice his wife.” Norwich Archdeaconry/125 8 April 1601. Baltimore, 1970, page 278.
My search of the Public Records Office at Kew revealed a number of Coffield sounding names around 1600. Unfortunately, none of these with a Gresham given name.
•William Cofeild and wife Elizabeth (born about 1595 in Checkney,Essex,England , a daughter of Phileman Whale of Chickney who left a will 4 April 1618
•To Judith Coffield, 20 sh god-daughter of Judity Morris of Dedham Essex, 25 January 1645 in New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 1894, page 118.
•William Coffyn “gent of Portledge Devon died beyond the Seas” with will of 13 July 1626 “to brother James Coffin, Henry Coffyn, sister Abby; father Richard Coffyn, late of Portledge {An added note on a Francis Coffin: transported 21 July 1635 by Thomas Smith who received 250 acres in Martin’s Hundred, up the James River/wpg.
•9 January 1631/2 by James for Edward Coffyn of Portledge.
•Michael Cofeld “gent of Tadlow” for wife Joane and bequeaths to in-laws 2 January 1608.
•Christenings: Margery Cofeld 29 September 1589 at Fyfield, Essex,, father was Joannis; John Coefield 1 September 1622 St. Nicholes Colchester, father was William; John Cofield 19 October 1579 of Earls Colne Essex; John Cofild, same location, son of Robert December 1587; Jane Cowfeild 2 February 1595 in Knightwick Worchester, father was Fraunce; And, all in Bedford: Joan Coffeild 19 April 1576, John Coffeild 12 February 1578, and Elizabeth Cofeild, 1581, Marg Coffeild 16 April 1584, all of a John.
•Elsewhere I have found that Lionell Cranfeild was a signator on the Third Virginia Charter, 12 March 1612, but it was not likely he ventured to the Americas.
David:
I'm not positive on anything but here is what I have:
Around 1700 there were Nansemond lands for 4 Coffield families (and maybe multiple families on some of these lands)
1) The original Gresham lands of about 1640 can be traced up to about 1780 when the last Gresham left them-He is the ophan of Daniel-
1b)At the present it is only with Gresham Coffield III that there may be definable descendants (see Table XXAC). A Gresham Coffield is shown as Justice of the Peace for Nansemond Co. in 1714 , this I presume is Gresham the III. In the mid-1700s several Coffields are listed in the Nansemond Parish Books. Edward, Daniel and James Coffield were related, probably brothers, born around 1700, lived on the ancestral lands of Gresham Coffield and were likely sons to Gresham III. Edward Coffield is cited first in Nansemond in 1744 as a Processioner in the Upper Parish from Keatons Creek to the extent of the Parish (northward) and up to 1763 for serving a number of warrants and other good works for the Lower Parish . The area of the Coffield lands was transferred to the Lower parish in 1745. We know that Daniel Coffield was a Processioner in the Lower Parish in 1763 and further, recognized at that time for keeping James Saunders for 21 days , as was Edward.
1c)
A Grisham Coffield and wife Charity of Bertie County with Jas. Moore of Northampton County sold 112 acres on the south side of Cashy Creek to Christopher Harrell in February 1788 . It seems likely that he was a resident of neighboring Chowan County as Greeham Coffield appeared on the Chowan County Tax Roll in Capt. Cullens District in 1795. Given his wife is named Charity , this is not the Gresham of Edgecombe County. Without further information I suspect that he is the Gresham Coffield of Nansemond County VA, orphan of Danl., cited in the 1769 Nansemond deed and later as Gressom who sold his land before 1794 --This is the Gresham, I presume went from VA to NC to GA
2) The most southern Coffield Lands in Nansemond were likely the home of Speir and Benjamine who went to Edgecomb NC-about the time father William died in 1745 (wife Elizabeth)- Of course Benj. himself had a Gresham b. 1747 (d. in 1815, married P. Sessums in 1768)
3)Researchers show a William Coffield #3 born in Nansemond in 1715 or so (1718 according to researchers) and parent to Slaughter, William, Willis and others—comprising a family who lived in the Chuckatuck Parish of Nansemond County. We know of a “William Coffield Sen” who obtains a land patent on the Chuckatuck, adjacent his other lands in 1729. I doubt that William #3 was the William of Patent 1729 who would have been born by, say 1700, to have other lands. Three of the lands forming William, Sr., (1729) borders belonged to Sykes, Jorden and Lovegrove—three families we find adjacent in the 1704 tax list and near to the land of Ruth Vincent Coffield , widow to John. There is thus a weak basis to assume that William, Sr. is son to John and Ruth Vincent Coffield. The Senior of the deed, certainly implies there was a William, Junior (most likely Senior’s son but possibly a nephew) of age or nearly so at that time, making William, Sr’s. birth not later than 1690. Perhaps, his birth could be stretched to 1692 when John Coffield married Ruth Vincent. Thus, William Sr. might have been born in 1692 and William Jr. around 1713. William #3 is likely the William Jr., mentioned in the 1729 deed. The William (we are designating as the Junior) is to have had a wife Mary or Pamelia: I believe these were two marriages. There is a record for a William Coffield marrying Parmelia Ridley Holladay in 1780 (?) and if this William is the one born about 1713 (1718?) and with the estate and children, discussed below, it is clear that this must be a second marriage. Other records show Pamelia as a Coffield in 1776, indicating a much earlier marriage to William, Jr. William (born 1713/8) presumably with a Mary had children named William #4 , Thomas , Mary, Slater (~1745-1785, the same as Slaughter), Willis , and Grissom , all born in the period 1740-1752. (And, possibly other children, Demsey and Samuel, .)
3b) notes on Pamelia: Parmillia was the daughter of Nathaniel Ridley and Priscilla Applewaite, born in Isle of Wight County. From the McLean-Johnson Family Tree: “Parmillia Ridley was born 1753. She married twice. She married Riddick Holladay 1771. Riddick was born 1751. She married William Coffield 1780. William was born 1750”. Pamelia Ridley was married to Riddick Holladay 9 Feb 1769. No record was located for her marriage to William Coffield. I believe there is sufficient proof that Pamelia married a much older William Coffield—the one believed born around 1718—rather than his son.--It is likely not correct that the Wm she married was born in 1750.
3c) The Mrs Mary coffield in the estate files for the family appears to me to be the wife of Slaughter (Mary Carney-who can traced to Edgecomb/Bertie etc with her children), While Mrs Pamely and Willis were the exectors to William (b. ca. 1715).
3d} I have not really tried to trace the Grissum/Gresham son to William and Mary of Chuckatuck-but will look a bit.
4) I have not been able to trace my family, William and apparent brothers John, Benjamin, and prob. Edward and James, back from Chowan/Bertie to parents in VA. They had prob. left by 1760.

Hope this fills in a couple blanks and is not too confusing.
Bill

Hi Bill: We've corresponded before on the Coffields/Cofields. I've seen the material on the Gresham son of Daniel
Coffield. However, the name Daniel never appears in the Cofields of GA and AL who are descendants of Gresham, while the names William, Gresham/Grissom, Willis, Thomas, and Mary show up repeatedly. Also, Are you sure that William of Nansemond or Chuckatuck had two wives, one named Mary, the other Pamela?
The name Mary Pamelia was used among the AL Cofields in the 19th century. Could William's wife have been Mary Pamela/Pamelia. Which Gresham had a wife
named Charity? This name also never appears among the GA and AL Cofields. I know that is not necessarily strong evidence, but it does seem to be important given that these Cofields did use other names repeatedly.

How was Daniel Coffield descended from the immigrant Gresham? How was William (the husband of Mary and or Pamelia) descended? David Cofield
Thomas Gresham Cofield is probably the same Thomas Cofield Jr. who is the oldest son of my ggggrandfather Thomas Nathan Cofield by his second wife Martha Fowler. Thomas Nathan was born 1790 NC, died ca 1872 Randolph County, AL. He married Martha Fowler in Randolph County in 1844. His first wife, from whom I descend, was Nancy Hughes. They married Dec. 22 1814 in Morgan County, GA.

Thomas Nathan was son of Gresham Cofield/Coffield who was born ca 1752 prob. in VA and died in the 1820s in Twiggs County, GA. Gresham was probably son of William and Mary Pamelia Cofield/Coffield of Nansemond County, VA.

All I have for Thomas Gresham Cofield is his wife Arlenie Hurst and a list of their children. I have extensive information on Thomas Nathan Cofield's first family and some on his second wife's children too. I also have some material on descendants of Thomas Nathan's brother Willis, born 1778, died 1850 Troup County, GA.

I suspect that the early Gresham you reference is actually the son of Daniel Coffield, for
Daniel is mentioned in a 1769 deed as father to a Gresham: "Gresham Coffield orphan of Danl., decsd. " Thus Samuel had died before this, say about 1765. The orphan Gresham Coffield, representing the fifth Coffield generation in America, sold his lands about 1780 and I suspect moved south to North Carolina where a Gresham is documented several times up to end of the 18th century, then on to Georgia. The Georgia Gresham Coffield reportedly died in Twiggs County, GA in 1814.

There was another Gresham (usually as Grissom) son to William and Mary Coffield (this was Wms first wife, his second was Pamelia Hollady), but they lived acros the Nansemond in Chuckatuck.

Yes, this is the same family. Columbus Boston Cofield was son of John Henry Cofield, son of Lewis Elbeny Cofield, son of Thomas Nathan Cofield by his first wife Nancy Hughes. Columbus and Roxie are buried in Liberty Cemetery in Randolph County near Lewis and Thomas nathan.

All from Randolph county. Some of the names you have written seems so familiar. I remember as a child visiting someone named Eullis and someone named Clyde. Im sure we are related in some way or another. It seems a little funny that both our grandfathers name were exactly the same.

Anne

I had a quick look at the 'Scotlands People' website, web address given below, and there was a Margaret Coffied born in Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland in 1911. The certificate can not be viewed on-line but you can order it.

Margaret B Coffield married Percival E Pallett in the first quarter of 1932 in Birmingham, England. The reference details can be found on Ancestry free bmd.

There was a Percival Pallett, aged 2 years, listed in the 1911 census in a household in King's Norton, Worcestershire, England. He is likely the one as the only other Percival Pallett in the 1911 census is aged 27 years.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Good luck.

Frank

Anne: Thanks again for your input. The only reason for my suspecting that Patsy's father was a Hodge is the fact that Henry Hodge was the guardian of her children until her marriage to Daniel Flanery. Of course, her mother could have been a Hodge, not her father. I not sure that Henry Hodge himself was her father, but he may have been her father-in-law. If her father was a Hodge, my best guess would be he was Robert Hodge, whence the name of her son, Robert Coffield.

I feel quite confident that the female age 50-60 in the entry for Robert Coffield in the 1830 Census is probably Patsy Coffield. Do you happen to know who Robert Coffield married?

If you have an interest in the Flannerys, contact me privately & I will send you the email addresses of several Flannery researchers.

There is actually a privately published book available on the Flannery family for $70.00, probably in the Family Tree Maker Book format. So far I haven't been able to get the author to respond to my requests to buy the book. It consolidates the research of most of the researchers that I am in contact with.

As you say, the Flannerys are a great maze, & there is more misinformation on the internet regarding them than information, including what is on my own Flannery web page. The biggest problem until only a few years ago is that most researchers were blithely unaware (or perhaps only nebulously aware) of the Flannerys in western Kentucky & southern Illinois in the late 1700s & early 1800s until one of Daniel Flanery's descendants contacted me.

Do you happen to know the names & families of Slaughter Coffield's children. So far, I've been guessing.

Halsey

Not a lot, but here it is: In 1820, Dicy is shown as a female Coffield family head, but I have not connected her to a Coffield family. Both of these ladies were subjects of Bastardy bonds. The two children with Dicy were born while she was unmarried. Dicey Coffield in February 1817 names Nathan Mires, Edward Bird, and Reddick White as Bondsmen for the first child to assure support of the child. It is not clear if one or all were the suspected father or just an interested party. Two years later Dicy Coffield names Tristram Capehart , Elisha Tomes, and Robt. C. Watson under the same circumstance. Dicy would have been born a Coffield, probably about 1800. Before 1830, Dicy Coffield married Staten Brown and their household is shown in 1830 with six children, one over 10 years of age .
Good hunting, Bill

Dicy is an ancestor of mine born in1799 or 1800 in Bertie Co. NC. She had 2 illegitimate children by 1820 and then married my ggggrandfather Staten Brown.
there are rumors of Native and African American blood there somewhere. Anything would be appreciated.

I would like to get more information from you. Benajah Coffield and Anna Ruth Coffield were my gggrandparents. Their daugher Sarah Eleanor Coffield Keesling was my ggrandmother and Sarah and George Robert Keesling's daughter, Amy Ester Keesling Grub, was my grandmother. Amy was married to William Edward Grub. My mother is Edna Eleanor Grub Miller. My name is Martha Sue Miller Robertson. Obviously this is largely a maternal line, so I have some difficulty getting information. If you have more on the Coffields, I would like to hear from you. Also, I have pictures from my grandmother of many of the Coffields. If you would like me to scan and send you copies, e-mail me at grrmsmr@twinvalley.net.
