Thanks for replying Sharon. Do you happen to know anything about Barry, supposedly an older brother of mine? I also have found a sister, Suzette and we are a year apart. We both live in Nova Scotia and get together. There appears to be only one sibling of Goldie's left, Gerald, in Ontario. Do you know how to contact him? Not exactly a closeknit family it seems. Feel free to contact me anytime.

Caroline

Hi Caroline, I am so excited to find you on ancestry. Until I received your message I did not know you and I were related. Goldie was my father's sister. My dad's name was Clinton Herbert Coffill. Goldie lived with us in Aurora Ontario during the last 3 months of her life. She died of bowel cancer. You have a sister named Ellen Marie, Goldie's youngest daughter. She lives in Ontario somewhere but I have not as yet located her. I am trying to find Goldie's married name but have not found it yet. We are 1st cousins. I have a sister named Catherine and a brother Micheal. Goldie's brother Mac just passed away last Thursday. Please email me anytime at nana.bird@hotmail.com
God bless you. Excited to hear from you again!!

I am Goldie Coffill's daughter, Caroline, who was given up for adoption in 1954. My date of birth is sept 2, 1953. I am looking for information about Goldie and her married name/s. I haven't been able to connect with anyone except Joann and she was very sketchy about Goldie. I live in Halifax and would appreciate contacts to help fill in the blanks.

Thanks in advance.

Carol Ann

Hello Andrew, we have the same grandfather. Our grandmother's maiden name was Allen. She separated from Arthur Coffill and lived in a trailer in the little village of Kennettcook not far from the covered bridge. Granddad lived in Hantsport until my father moved him up to Ontario where he later died in the summer of 1972-73. My father Clinton Herbert Coffill died in March of 87 and is buried in Hantsport. Granddad and grandma had I think 6 children. The oldest was Goldie who died of bowel cancer at the age of 43. Then there was Joan, Francis, Clinton, Malcolm and Gerald. I have some other family history if you care to search more. Sharon

Would you be the daughter of Mac? If so, you and I walked barefoot on the country roads during the summer of 1975-76 during my visit to my grandmother Daisy.

Information I have on the Coffill family shows Horace Greely COFFILL's parents as Charles C. COFFILL and Arminella BROWN. Charles was b. 23 Apr 1836 in Hortonville, Kings Co., NS and d. 6 Jan 1912 in Stellarton, Pictou Co., NS.
Charles's parents were Asa COFFILL and Ruth PINEO (my ancestors). Asa was b. 30 Jul 1816 in Horton, Kings Co., NS and d. 24 Jan 1909 in Scott's Bay, Kings Co., NS.
Asa's parents were Patrick COFFILL and Sarah HUNTLEY. Patrick was b. 1781 in Windsor, Hants Co., NS and d. 6 Jan 1869 in Lower Horton, Kings Co., NS.
Patrick's parents were William COFFILL and Mary CAMPBELL. It is unsubstantiated (as far as I know) that William was b. 22 Jun 1754 in Northern Ireland. And it is with William that my COFFILL family line ends.
Hopefully someday someone somewhere will find out for sure where this William came from and who his ancestors were.
Regards,
Jerry Huntley,
Scott's Bay, Kings Co., NS

There is an interesting source that I came accross recently, and if anyone has this CD, could you please send me the information on the "Coffill" that is listed.

Irish Mariners Indexes for crewmembers born in Ireland.

This series is an every name index of crewmembers born in Ireland by surname or county groups - as found on the Ships & Seafarers of Atlantic Canada CD produced by Memorial University of Newfoundland - chock full of information for 19th century mariners. The 500 MB and 500,000 record CD is not included - each index summarizes the information available on the Cd for individual mariners born in Ireland. These mariner indexes shows Last Name, First Name, Born Circa Year and Birthplace in the province (if given), plus Database location on the CD and number of records for their voyages. My side of the family have been interested in tracing all the branches of the Coffill's over the world as we know that it is such an unusual surname. Whenever you see the name, you know that you have to be related in some way. I would love to hear from any of you out there, and am on the net most nights, as my partner works abroad. Isn' t the internet a wonderful place?

Get in touch soon. I would love to meet new members of the family.

All the best

Lynn

Nova Scotia Coffills

I am looking for information regarding how/when/why the Coffill family arrived in Nova Scotia. Rumors are abundant, but the consensus seems to be the family arrived from Northern Ireland in perhaps the 1770s. So far, I have had little success tracing the family "into" Nova Scotia from either Canadian records or Irish records. Scotland and England are certainly possibilities. I would appreciate any leads and/or information.

I am Son of Ralph (Sandy) Coffill originally from NS, who is son of Waren Coffill (NS Wolfville/Grande Pre area). Dad has always told me that any looking into the family name says they came to NS from Ireland and to Ireland from Germany?

Yet no one but him seems to find this German link?
It sounds like he may be wrong and it is English descent, I have a family tree I was working on a long time ago and could send you what I have if anyone wants, it is not much but it is current with all us Coffills here in Alberta, Canada

Coffill Surname

I research the Nova Scotia Coffills and have a goodly number of the descendants of William and Mary (Campbell) Coffill on file, with more being created all the time. I am aware of the Irish ancestry theory, but there were never any born there. I am currently exploring the possibility of a link to the English Coffills.

Indeed there are many Coffill's in Nova Scotia. The origional Coffill was William Coffill who migrated to Nova Scotia from Ireland at about the time of the American Revolution. They lived in Hortonville, Kings County Nova Scotia The name Coffill was changed to Coffell by Harris Coffill during the first world war. All descendants of Harris spell the name Coffell

Coffilll's From Essex

Hi John,
You say you were told they originally came from Ireland which is what my grandmother said her Dad James Coffill always said. She also said he spoke with an accent. I'm wondering if the surname changed or spelling at least because any Irish searches I've done there were no Coffill's. There are however many in Nova Scotia. There definitely is however a realtion between our Coffill's. James was a son of Thomas, so he must be your great grandfather's brother. I have a cousin living in Beverly who will be very happy to hear this and knows more about the Coffills than I do and would have a lot of info for you. My email is shawldance@aol.com. Please get in touch and we can share info.

Coffill surname

My grandmother was a Coffill born in Essex. Her father was John, born around 1865, son of Thomas, born around 1827. She always said that they had come from Saint Johns (NB? NF?)and had come down from Maine to settle at Newburyport and Essex. One brother, she said, settled in Maine, one in Newburyport (Michael, I think) and one in Essex (Thomas). Thomas died in 1914 I think, and it says on his death certificate that he was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. My grandmother always said that the were of scots-irish descent.

James Coffill / Coffill Surname

My great grandfather was James Coffill b. 10 Apr 1871, who married my great grandmother Mary Augusta Younger (Alphen, 1st marraige) and they had 10 children. All of this took place in Gloucester, Essex, MA. He had 2 children, one died and then his wife died. His father is said to be Thomas. Neither one comes up in any searches. There are 3 Coffill's listed in Maine census (bef. 1850) We are told they come from Nova Scotia and that they claimed to be Irish and spoke with an accent. Are there any Coffill's out there and where do they come from????
