Hello, My name is Terrance Stevenson and I've just come across your posted letter of Charles Fisher Coffin's application for membership in the SAR. He was a brother of my gg-grandfather William Hiatt Coffin. I know much about Charles, through a biography, "Charles F. Coffin, Quaker Pioneer," and from other sources as well. I also have several photographs of him which were in my gg-grandfather Coffin's albums. Many of his letters are in the Quaker Archives at Earlham College. I would be very interested in seeing other letters, including the ones between him and his son Percival. It was at Percival's home in Chicago that my great uncle Frank Coffin was introduced to his wife Ruth Murphy. Percival is an interesting character in his own right as he along with his brother Francis Albion were parties in a precedent-setting Supreme Court decision. Francis Albion served time in jail; Percival did not. Any letters that you could scan or send to me would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Terry Stevenson

Re: Sue Ayer Coffin of TN married Dr. Samuel T. Evans, brother of Rear Adm. Robley D. Evans

Thank you very much for your post and information about the Coffin book. I did find a Coffin family genealogy book using Heritage Quest that gave me the information for which I had been looking. I was looking for Sue Coffin's relatives in an effort to track her whereabouts after the death of her husband, Dr. Samuel Taylor Evans. I finally found her living in Texas with her three sons, Samuel T (who was also a doctor like his father but died in 1904 at the age of 26), John Coffin (who eventually moved to Utah where he died in 1944), and Robley D. (who I lost track of after the 1930 census). I don't know if any of Sue's Coffin relatives were living in that area or not but some of the Evans family settled in that area. I mainly track the Evans but sidetrack into marriage related families if I have trouble finding someone. I have turned up a lot of interesting things by using this method! Thank you again for your help!

One was the Alexander line, which I belong to; and the other was the Robert line, which I believe Edward belonged to. The overall clan split up with one branch going to Louisiana/Texas, and another going to Oregon. My branch settled in Iowa.
Hi. Has anyone come across George Coffin; born about 1814 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. In the 1851 census he was: aged 37, married to Jane, working as a cabinet maker, living in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, with eight children living at home. George and Jane were married at, St.James Duke's Place, London, in 1837. The 1861 census has George's place of birth as Portsea (an area of Portsmouth).
If I have the correct George, and I think I have, he died in Bethnal Green in 1866. It is really his parents I am trying to identify. Portsea seems to have a number of possible candidates at this time.

Hi. It appears that there is not a close connection between your Kenn Coffin and this particular upstate New York Coffin family. It looks like your Kenn is descended from Tristram through Stephen -> Stephen -> Zephaniah -> Paul -> Peleg -> Charles G. -> Jerome -> Kenn.

Hi cousin Jannette, thank you for responding and posting that link. Cutter's history of Northern New York is a very useful and informative resource, but he does make some errors, and doesn't show his sources, so we can't tell where he got his information from. He indicates that John & Mary (Davis) Coffin had sons Edward, Isaac, and John, but Louis Coffin's "The Coffin Family" shows 10 or 11 children, none of which are named Isaac.

The thing that makes this difficult is that we have no primary sources to indicate one way or the other. The closest thing (in my mind) to a primary source is Edward Coffin's gravestone, which indicates Edward was born in 1741, about 10 years before John Coffin and Mary Davis were married. Of course, Edward's gravestone could have been inscribed later based on erroneous information, but it seems unlikely that it would be that far off. Tris was looking into Barrington, Nova Scotia records to see if they would shed any light on this question.

Eleanor of Aquitaine

I've noticed a prevailing number of instances showing Eleanor of Aquitane having been married to one of the Coffyn knights. Unless I am grossly mistaken, this is absolutely untrue. It is so interesting how this sort of "rumor" can find its way and permeate family trees like a virus.

Does anyone have any proof that Eleanor of Aquitaine was actually married to a Coffyn at any period of time?

Authenticate Sir Richard Coffyn/Sir Jean Ricardus Chauvin 1066

For more than at least one century, the Coffin lineage has been suggested to have originated as far back as 1066 where it is suggested that a sir Richard Coffyn was sighted by William the Conqueror during the Battle of Hastings.

While this notion is clearly exciting and romantic from many perspectives, I find myself often wondering what the truth really is. The Battle of Hastings is an historical event that seems to be a huge magnate for genealogists to attribute some sort of ancestral connection to. I've learned that because of thaws, and being the case for centuries, finding factual records of the true participants isn't easy. The Battle Rolls themselves are considered to be largely fabricated and that more than a few versions exist.

So, how can we know, or attempt to learn 1) was there really a Sir Richard Coffyn who accompanied William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings? 2) Was this Sir Richard knighted by William the Conqueror? 3) did he originate from Caen, Falaise as the story is told? 4) What about Courtitot? was this the manor and geographical namesake of the Coffyn/Coffin family? 5) What about the theory that Sir Richard was rally named Sir Jean Ricardus Chauvin?

I am hoping folks will join me in sharing some energy and discussion, and perhaps uncover information and facts that prove or disprove some of the conjecture.

-Tristram Coffin

Thanks for posting! I don't think Coffin was her maiden name, as the marriage records and bonds clearly list her as Anthoney (sic). However, I haven't ruled out that "Anthony" was a previous married name. I have not, however, been able to find a Phebe Coffin marrying an "Anthony" at all during this time period.

I know she's not the same as the one who married Jonathan. Jonathan Anthony would've been my Phebe's brother. Jonathan Anthony married a different Phebe Coffin in Feb. 1797 and my Phebe Anthony married Thomas Hunt in November 1797. She died in 1808 (born in 1770). My Phebe was born May 1, 1765 and died April 12, 1816.

The reason why I feel like James Anthony and Lydia Coffin had to be my Phebe's parents is because she named her daughter Lydia (my great-great-great-great grandmother), who in turn named her daughter Phebe. I've also seen it listed on websites as such but there is no documentation. :( Of course the names Phebe and Lydia were repeated all the time. Ugh.

Coffin may have been her maiden name. Looking at the Barney Collection and Nantucket VRs, the only reference I see is a Phebe Coffin b ? d 1809-1810. A daughter of Benjamin Coffin and Elizabeth Hussey, she married Jonathan Anthony, son of James and Lydia Coffin. This was in the Barney Collection.

Nantucket VRs lists her death as well. Listed as
Anthony, Phebe, second wife of Jonathan (son of James of New Garden), dau of Benjamin Coffin Jr. and Elizabeth Hussey.

To add to the confusion, looks like at least two of the male children of John Hunt and Phebe Coffin married daughters of Barnabas Coffin and Phebe Marshall.

Lydia Coffin (1733-1776) and James Anthony children

Searching for the children of Lydia Coffin and James Anthony, specifically a Phebe, born May 1, 1765. Lydia and James were both born in Massachusetts in 1735 and 1733 respectively. They settled in New Garden MM in Guilford County, NC. Lydia died before or around 1776. Her husband later married Mary Macy Way (Way married name; she was the widower of Paul Way).

I need to make sure Phebe Anthony was the daughter of James Anthony and Lydia Coffin and that she married my Thomas Hunt in 1797 to connect the last piece of the puzzle.

The notes I've compiled are below:

Lydia Coffin (b. 7/1735, d. on or before 1776) married in 7/1762 James Anthony in Massachusetts (I’ve seen him born in N.C. and born in Bristol Massachusetts, likely the latter)

Various sources list Thomas Hunt as marrying Phebe ANTHONY (i.e. NC Marriage records) in November 1797.

Various websites list Thomas Hunt as marrying Phebe Coffin. In those same sources she is listed as the daughter of Lydia and James Anthony. Is Coffin her middle name?

Looking at known children of James and Lydia Anthony, I do not see a “Phebe” listed. Obediah, listed in some places as 1760 and some as 1765, could be a twin if born in 1765 which is usually what I see.

James Anthony (b. 1733, d. 1798) in Guilford County (will prob. August 1799) married Mary Macy Way (Way was her widowed married name) in 1776 IN Massachusetts, leading me to believe that Lydia possibly never lived in North Carolina.

Obediah “Obed” (b. circa 1760-1765, d. 1836) married Sarah Macy
Jonathan Anthony (b. 1767, d. ?) married Lydia Swain, then Phebe Coffin, b. 1770, d. 1808
Charlotte Anthony (b. 177?, d. ?) also called Charlota married Henry Way.
Ruth Anthony (b. ?, d. ?) married Joseph Trotter on January 10, 1800 (Guilford Co., NC). She died in Wayne County, Indiana.

Other children seen listed: Henry, James Jr., William in Eliza Starbuck Barney Genealogical Record (Nantucket history). No birth, marriages or death dates for these.
Hi Tristram. You may have seen this in my family tree (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...), but I am convinced that Edward Coffin was not the son of John and Mary (Davis) Coffin, as some have stated. There is strong circumstantial evidence that he was the son of Isaac and Anna (Churchill) Coffin/Coffing. See my discussion of this at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mycoffinro... . Isaac Coffing seems to descend from the Jacob Coffing that came from Plymouth, England to Philadelphia on the ship "Desire" in June 1686, but I have no evidence of this.

I am not related to this family….

Longmont Ledger (Longmont, Boulder County)
June 30, 1905

Married:

COFFIN-KANE- At the residence of the Rev. Wm. Nathaniel Friend, in Golden, Colo., on Sunday, June 25, 1905, Roy G. Coffin and Ruth M. Kane, both of Longmont.
The ceremony was performed immediately after the morning service by the Rev. Mr. Friend who is a good friend of the groom, having been associated with him more or less his whole college life. The bride was a graduate of the Longmont High School in 1900 and the groom in 1899. Mr. Coffin is widely know in this part of Colorado, for he was born and grew up on his fathers’, R. F. Coffin’s farm east of Longmont. He spent some years at the State School of Mines at Golden.. With a fine education, noble asperations and a good wife he ought to succeed in life.
The bride we have known for years. Flattery does not sound well in a newspaper, but Mr. and Mrs. Roy Coffin possess our confidence and esteem, and we hope that their life’s journey will be full of happiness.
About thirty of their friends went down to the ranch and surprised the, and had the jolliest kind of a time Monday night.
