Surnames: Cogan, Kogin
I am researching descendants of the Cogan family that was living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio from about 1813. Over the next 100 years the family spread to other parts of Ohio, and to Indiana and Michigan.

Some of the counties where they settled were:

In Ohio: Coshocton, Stark and Carroll Cos.;
Cuyahoga Co. (Cleveland);
Jackson and Butler Cos.
Lucas (Toledo), Wood and Fulton Cos.

In Indiana: Steuben Co. - where the name was often spelt Kogin
Noble, Wabash and Huntington Cos.
Vigo, Vermillion & Clay Cos. (Terre Haute region)

In Michigan: Isabella, Missaukee, and Saginaw Cos.

This family probably came to Ohio from Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and was of German or Dutch origin. It seems very unlikely that they were at all related to any of the various Irish Cogan families.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has, or is looking for, information about this family.
