Manson family from Texas / Louisiana

I am researching the Manson Family from Texas. My name is Samuel, My father is Thomas Manson born 1924 in San Antonio Texas, His Father was Harry Edmond Manson born 1896 in Galveston Texas, his father Thomas C. Manson Born 1870 in new Orleans, His Father Thomas Manson Born +-1840, married to Mary Manson born in Ireland.

The line stops there, I'm trying to make the Ireland / US connection with Thomas and Mary Manson and learn the maiden name of Mary, so I can go back further. I have a census that says that Thomas immigrated from Ireland in 1850.

Take a look at my tree sam6708, maybe it will help. Any information would be appreciated

I fear that the publisher is out of business. McDowell Publishing in Utica, KY actually did a second printing of the book. I have a loose leaf version of it and that might be your best bet.
I would be interested in a copy of this book. I am related to the Cogdills through my Mother's Snuffer line. We are related to James Frederick Cogdill and Jacob Cogdill. They started out in the Carolinas, then to Tenessee, and finally to Missouri.
Please let me know if this becomes a reality. Thank you.
Thank you for the interesting note, Samantha. I believe your father is my second cousin. That your great grandfather James H. Cogdill and my grandfather Arthur, were brothers.

It isn't often that I get someone of your age inquiring about family history and it is quite delightful. I have much information to share, if you are interested. This information will take your ancestors back to England to the 1700's, however more immediately, your forefathers fought in the American Revolutionary War, the American Civil War and all/most major wars since. It is quite the American history journey.

On a separate note, I laughed when I received your email because I have two nieces named Brittany and Samantha from my younger brother. I think it's cute that they have identical namesakes that are cousins. Ironically, I have a nephew by my older brother who's name is Shawn (not Sean).

I am showing your family is from Tawippity, Missouri (Harold). You may know that there are about 100 of your cousins in Southern Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Kentucky. Over time, I'll identify them for you.

To contact me directly, you can send emails to bill@wscogdill.com which is my personal website.

In closing, I'd like to say thanks for reaching out.
It is good to meet you. I am sure you will get many stories to tell your father and family about.

Best regards,
Bill Cogdill
Chicago
Did you ever republish the book? If so do you have a Talitha dau of George W Cogdill and Sarah Jane Long? Elija Cogdill and Mary Proctor were George's parents. If they are in there and you have any books I would love to purchase one. Am now retired and able to actually get down to the research and verification needed to support the assumptions of the line.

Yes, we have documentation on your Frederick and my William in NC from about 1770 onward. It only appears there was some association, but no proof of family relationship that I am aware of. It does seem likely, though.

I have friends in London that help me with some research, but until they get more church records electronically scanned and cataloged, the progress is slow.

They both could write and signed their names on documents, which does give a clue that both were schooled or tutored, in which case this leads me to believe they and/or their family of origins had some means from which to afford the schooling financially. This has me now looking through legal and governmental documents in London, but with no eventful discoveries yet.

Keep in touch and nice to meet you.

Bill Cogdill
Chicago

I believe I am a direct descendant of Frederick H. Cogdill (Frederick, William, William Dudley, William Tyre, Ellis Monroe, Sr., Ellis Monroe, jr.(my father).

Trying to find out who Frederick's father was. I'm wondering if it's the original William that was born in London in 1736 and first appears in records in North Carolina in 1772.

the info I have on Frederick is that he left NC for Kentucky in 1795, then migrated to Tennessee in 1810, then back to Kentucky in 1815 and finally on to Missouri in 1820.

Frederick Cogdill migrated with his family to Kentucky (1795), Tennessee (1810), back to Kentucky (1815), and on to Missouri (1820) together with his neighbors (Daniel and Jacob Shipman; Thomas Harrington;). They originated in North Carolina where they are believed to have been related to the William Cogdill and John Cogdill families. There is a lot of circumstancial evidence for this belief. Some of this info is recorded in the Erma Carmichael book "A History of Cook, Cogdill, Taylor and Allied Families" which is available from the publisher.

What follows is an outline of the info I have on the Frederick Cogdill line so far. I can send it to you in Excell format which is easier to read and is clear on what info came from the book and what came from other sources.

Just follow the format of 1.0 has children 1.1,1.2,etc. and 1.1 has children 1.1.1,1.1.2,1.1.3 and so on.

b. is "born"; d. is "died"; m. is "married"; pb. is "place buried".

LINE OF FREDERICK COGDILL

1.0	Frederick Cogdill b. 1768 Rutherford Co. –or- Tyron Co.
If Joseph T. Cogdill was born in Feb. 1889; if he was a Baptist preacher in the Hartford, TN area; If he married Mary Shelton; If your husband's aunts and uncles on the Cogdill side were Thelma, Lura, Olenis, Issac, and Tiny; If all that is true, then I can help you with the line starting at Joseph and going back up the line to William Cogdill Sr. born in the 1750's in England.

Mr. Carmichael,
I happen upon your post about Eunice Cogdill Raines, I too am one of her grandaughters. I remember her telling us about how small she was when she was born and that her mother died in childbirth. She had an aunt Berthie who if I am not mistaken raised her. Any way you said you had some documents about her and my grandfather Lester Raines I too would love to have a copy of them if at all possible.
Please feel free to e-mail me @ falen@comcast.net
Thank you,
Falena

I believe Talitha was my greatgrandmother. According to my research Talitha gave birth to Eunice Cogdill and passed away either in childbirth or shortly after. I would appreciate any information you have to share.
Thank you,
Eunice Davis

Do you have something that indicates that Elijah is buried at Addie? George (son of Elijah) is buried there, as you're facing the cemetery, on the rise to the right at the back. I've been there many times but didn't have any indication Elijah might be there. Where should I look?

P.S. I have the Jackson County Heritage books. I do know that just up the road from Addie was Cogdill land. There is a smaller Cogdill only cemetery a little further on (as you're headed away from Sylva) where George's son John's family is buried.

I'm one of her sister's great-grandchildren. Mary Atheline (1881-1954) married Ferry Candler Snyder (1877-1967). They left Jackson county when he got hired by the railroad and spent most of the rest of their lives in Henderson county. (Ferry was one of Hute's brothers.)

I'm not home right now, so don't have my info at hand, but you might want to join NC-JACKSO (Jackson Co., NC) mailing list.

I have both the Jackson county Heritage books. Both William and Mary Ann Cogdill Clayton and Hute and his wife are buried in the same cemetery as Elijah Cogdill. This is Addie Cemetery, which is just off Scott's Creek Road, outside Sylva, NC.

Cogdill/Cogdell/Cogsdale Surname

Dana, Thanks for the reply. I have very little information on my ancestors-I hit a brick wall in two directions. My GGfather was Nelson Crowder Cogdell (3-15-1838 to 7-2-1927) (Listed as N.C. and Nelson Cogsdale in the Confederate War records-signed on in north Texas) after which he does not appear again until after 1900. My GGmother was Mary Ellen Fowler (3-10-1847 to 10-12-1884) who by family stories was a Native American. My Grandfather was James Andrew Cogdell. I do not know where my GGfather or GGmother were born or lived prior to living in Arkansas. They both lived there and are buried in Pike County, Arkansas. My grandfather lived in Arkansas all my life, but I do not know where he was born.

Whatever you can do is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mary

Re: Is Frederick Cogdill from NC somehow related to William Cogdill from England?

The first Frederick (1768-1834) brought the family to MO. Among other children he had a son, William (1801- ), who had a son also named Frederick the grandfather. You would need to go back beyond your grandfather to the mid-1800's to make some connection to this line. There are many Cogdills working on the MO line, so this might not be too difficult.
