This is Pete Coggeshall, Sandy's husband.

The 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" lists an Edward Bradford Coggeshall who was born April 25, 1875. This is the only listing in this book that makes sense for the Edward B Coggeshall you are discussing. His parents are John East Coggeshall and Martha Gould Jenney. They were married in Fairhaven, Mass on Oct 23, 1874 -- and presumably living there when Edward was born.

This family is part of a Coggeshall line that does NOT trace back to President John Coggeshall of Rhode Island (b 1601). It traces back to John Coggeshall (b 1717) of Tiverton Mass and Amy Dwelley.

Hello; sorry, but the only information on Mary is her date and place of birth. Not even that much on her husband Edward Coggeshall;all I have on him is the date of his marriage, July 1903.
All this was on the family history pages of the bible, but apparently whoever was maintaining it lost track of some of the family members as they married and possibly moved away.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
John W.

This is Sandy's husband Pete.

Your information is not correct on Major John - Patience Throckmorton was his second wife, not his daughter. They were married in Providence, RI in December, 1655.

With your link to Major John and his wife Patience Throckmorton, you can tie into one of 8 slightly different lines that my father has established back to a king of England - and proved to the exacting genealogy standards of the genealogy group commonly known as "The Royal Bastards."

For more details you may be interested in a copy of his detailed genealogy book - "Ancestors and Kin" by Robert Walden Coggeshall.

I have copies of this book for sale, so if interested, feel free to contact me via e-mail:
pcoggeshall@earthlink.net

This book also traces the Coggeshall line of President John Coggeshall back to Sir Thomas de Coggeshall, who was living in 1149. It also traces the Throckmorton family back to Gervais de Throckmorton who was born around 1080.
I just discovered that I am the 9th great grandaughter of John Coggeshall, b. abt 1591 - d.11/27/1647, the first president of Rhode Island, through his son Major John Coggshall, his daughter Patience Throckmorton Coggeshall married Samuel Rathbone, their daughter Rebecca married John Rider, whose daughter Phoebe Rider married Daniel Eggers, Sr. Their son Landrine Eggers married Tabitha Tatum, their son William Eggers married Nancy Eveland, whose son George Washington Eggers(my great grandfather) married Mary Clarissa Flowers in Pickering, MO. It's great that's there is so much about the Coggeshall Family available. I've only begun to really get to digging and have so much information. Thank you all for sharing documented info.

This is Pete Coggeshall, Sandy's husband.

You need to see my posting on Benoni (Coggeshall) Weaver who changed his name from Coggeshall "in order to inherit the estate of Benoni Weaver, the former husband of his mother, Hannah (Weaver) Coggeshall." This information comes from the 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" (TCIA) on Page 177-8.

Stephen Perry Weaver is the 5 child of Benoni (Coggeshall) Weaver and Mary Peckham. Stephen was b in Middletown, RI on 9-10-1822; married Newport, RI (no date given) to Elizabeth Gibbs who was born in Portsmouth, RI on 12-5-1823; she died Middletown on 12-28-1898.
They had 5 daughters (all listed in TCIA).

I suspect that there may be a mis-spelling in your information. The Coggeshall line from President John down to Stephen is as follows:

- President John Coggeshall = great x 5 grandfather
- Joshua Coggeshall = great x 4 grandfather
- Joshua Coggeshall = great-great-great grandfather
- Capt. Thomas Coggeshall = great-great grandfather
- Ensign Thomas Coggeshall = great grandfather
- Josiah Coggeshall = grandfather
- Benoni (Coggeshall) Weaver = father
- Stephen Perry (Coggeshall) Weaver = son

I suspect that the Joshua Coggeshall you are asking about may be his grandfather Josiah. This may also be his half-uncle Josiah Coggeshall who was born in Middletown 5-7-1782.

There is only one Alton Coggeshall listed in the index of TCIA, Alton Francis Coggeshall was born 1-3-1878 the third child of George Coggeshall and Alzada Francis Weaver. The line from President John matches the one shown above only as far down as Capt Thomas. They would have been distant cousins both living in the Middletown, RI area.

There is a great deal of information in TCIA on this family, too much for me to appempt to post here.

Trust me, I know how hard it is to get the info right. Your info is correct, but the parents of Robert have to be disregarded. That Robert did exist, but was Rebecca's stepson instead of husband. I haven't found any info anywhere about Robert Sr.'s parentage. All I've found is that Robert was born in Scotland in 1688.

So this is the Rebecca Coggeshall on page 21 of "The Coggeshalls in America" (TCIA). My Copy of the book says the following about this marriage:
"Rebecca Coggeshall, born Newport, RI on Dec 19, 1721, married Newport, RI, December 30, 1742, by Peter Burns, Justice, ROBERT TAYLOR, son of Robert and Patience (Widow Chapman) Taylor. He was born Newport, RI, December 11, 1722. She was his third wife."

And the error is that the Robert Taylor she married was born in 1688 in Scotland and not in 1722 in Newport, RI. I wonder if Peter Burns, Justice actually married this couple? I wonder if the correct Robert Taylor's father and mother are properly identified? You do indicate that Rebecca was Robert's third wife, as shown in TCIA.

Given that this is a book about the Coggeshall family (not the Taylor family), this seems (IMHO) a minor error, not a major error.

I am certain that this branch of the Coggeshall family (which is not my branch) is probably aware of this minor error. Yet you appear in your first posting to condemn all of the information contained in "The Coggeshalls in America" because of this one error.

It turns out that genealogy is very difficult to get 100% correct. One minor error, like citing an incorrect Robert Taylor, can blemish a perfect record.

Well, I know for a fact that there are other errors in TCIA, some more major that this one. On pg 282 Horace Greeley Coggeshall should be listed as the last member of the Eighth Generation (counting President John as the First Generation in America). The original printing of TCIA shows all listed members after Horace as being members of the Eighth Generation, when in fact they were actually members of the Ninth Generation or Tenth Generation in America. This major error was corrected by my father, Reobert Walden Coggeshall, before TCIA was reprinted in 1988. Is the genealogy information in TCIA accepted by the "Royal Bastards" as sufficiently accurate to prove one of their very difficult to prove lines? NO ! But the information in this book is better than much that is available on the internet -- and I suspect TCIA is the source of a good deal of this internet information.

Excellent genealogy requires that sources for information be cited, and TCIA does very little of that. But for those trying to determine relationships in this unique family, it is certainly an adequate tool, and not to be dismissed as casually as you have done.

I've already spoken to someone who claimed to be a member of the family about this, and HE knew what I was talking about. Rebecca Coggeshall, daughter of Benjamin Coggeshall and Sarah Easton, married Robert Taylor of Newport, b. 1688 in Scotland, not Robert Taylor who was born in the 1720s. Rebecca was Robert's third wife.

Given the way that "The Coggeshalls in America" was assembled, it's a wonder there are not more errors in it -- glaring or not. If you have access to the Coggeshall Historical Association's reprinted version (1982) of "The Coggeshalls in America" that my father produced (and made some correction in versus the original 1930 edition), you should read the explanation my father provided of how this book was assembled. This appears on the back of the picture of Charles Pierce Coggeshall (pg 241) and the back of the picture of Thelwell Russel Coggeshall (pg 317).

So that I might correct my versions of this book, please advise me which of the following list of 19 completely different Rebecca Coggeshalls (taken from the book's index) is the one with the "glarring error" of an incorrect husband, (and what should the notation be corrected to read?):

On pg 14 Rebecca Coggeshall marries John Reynolds.
On pg 17 Rebecca Coggeshall dies at age 6 months.
On pg 20 Rebecca Coggeahall dies at age 10 years.
On pg 21 Rebecca Coggeshall marries John Freebody.
On pg 23 Rebecca Coggeshall dies at age 3.5 years.
On pg 26 Rebecca Coggeshall marries Peleg Wood.
On pg 39 Rebecca Coggeshall marries James Easton.
On pg 48 Rebecca Coggeshall marries James Weaver.
On pg 63 Rebecca Chipman Coggeshall marries Thomas Coggeshall (4th cousins).
On pg 75 Rebecca Coggeshall marries Oliver Wightman.
On pg 96 Rebecca Coggeshall dies just short of age 2.
On pg 96 the next girl in this family was also named Rebecca Coggeshall who marries 1) Amherst D Scoville 2) Dr Joel R Andrews.
On pg 118 Rebecca Whitman Coggeshall marries Edwin C Johnson.
On pg 166 Rebecca Chipman Coggeshall marries Moses Barlow.
On pg 192 Rebecca Coggeshall marries Jesse Cates.
On pg 213 Rebecca Ann Coggeshall remains single.
On pg 242 Rebecca Booth Coggeshall marries Benjamin Bill.
on pg 264 Rebecca Ann Coggeshall dies at age 6 months.
On pg 341 a Rebecca Coggeshall is noted with no dates or other information.

Also, since you mention "some glaring errors," this implies there are more than this Rebecca Coggeshall error. Please advise us of what those other "glaring errors" could be.

I am trying to gather enough information to feature George Coggeshall for the November/December. He was a major factor in the passage of the 1848 Drug Import Act and the formation of the American Pharmaceutical (now Pharmacists) Association.I have been unable to find any personal information. (I can provide background information on the act and his role in APhA if you are interested and will provide an e-mail addrees.)

The Cincinnati Library has a copy of the book you cited and I will check that on Thursday.
I certainly agree about the difficulty of using sources that do not provide detailed source information -- such as The Coggeshalls in America (TCIA). I made the same point just about an hour ago, posting an answer on another Coggeshall thread on this site.

It is highly possible that Benoni (Coggeshall) Weaver was out of wedlock and not the actual son of Josiah Coggeshall. Birth records from back then generally tired to hide the lack of an identifiable father for a child. Also, those in this family providing information to the two men who compiled TCIA would also want to hide this fact. And they could get away with this because they did not need to cite any sources for their information. So you are prorbably correct in this assertion.

Pete,

Again, many thanks. No, I do not need the children of Benoni Coggeshall Weaver. Some contributors to this line have that Benoni died in Somme, France! I guess one person makes an error and other people copy it without verifying sources.

Diane

This is Pete Coggeshall, Sandy's husband.

Almost all of the questions in this and the previous post on this thread are answered in the 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" (TCIA).

On page 109 is a detailed listing for Josiah Coggeshall of Middletown, RI who was born there on 8-13-1752 and died there in 18??. Josiah was married 3 times as follows:
1)To Mary Horswell, spinster at Newport, RI on 10-10-1776. She died in Middletown (no dates given).
2)To Mrs Hannah Weaver at Middletown on 11-22-1786, widow of Benoni Weaver. She died Middletown (no dates or original maiden name given).
3)To Mrs Patience (Tripp) Peckham, widow, at Newport on 4-27-1817.

Josiah had 6 children all born in Middletown, RI by his first wife as follows:
- Simon Horswell Coggeshall b 7-16-1777 (more about him on pg 170).
- Freeborn Coggeshall b 1780 (more about him on pg 171).
- Josiah Coggeshall b 5-7-1782 (more about him on pg 172).
- Ruth Coggeshall who married Abraham Brown and had 1 child, Abram A Brown.
- Deborah Coggeshall who married Abraham Peckham and had 2 children "of whom we know nothing."
- Pearce Horswell Coggeshall b 3-15-1785 (more about him on pg 173-6).

Josiah had 4 children all born in Middletown by his second wife as follows:
- Benoni Coggeshall b 10-23-1787 (more about him on pg 177, some of which appears below).
- Mary or Abigail Coggeshall who married Westin Leonard. "They went out West where she soon afterwards died."
- Hannah Cornell Coggeshall b 8-3-1792, d Bristol RI 7-18-1882, m Middletown, Benjamin Peckham. Child Eliza Maria Peckham (more avail on Eliza).
- Elizabeth Coggeshall married Walter Leonard. "They went to Ohio to live."

The third wife bore no children to Josiah.

From Page 177:
Benoni (Coggeshall) Weaver of Middletown, RI was born Middletown on 10-23-1787, died Middletown 10-22-1849; married Middletown on 12-12-1815 Mary Peckham, daughter of Levi and Sarah (Tripp) Peckham. She was born Middletwon 4-22-1787, died Middletwon June, 1876.

"Benoni Coggeshall had his name changed to Benoni Weaver, in order to inherit the estate of Benoni Weaver, the former husband of his mother, Hannah (Weaver) Coggeshall."

Benoni and Mary had 8 children (7 boys) all of whom are listed in TCIA. Because this post is getting long, I can post the information on these 8 children, if asked for that information.

PETE

I too am interested in this line and have been very confused about the surname of Benoni Weaver, son of Josiah Coggeshall and Hannah Weaver. Another post states that Josiah Coggeshall m. (1)Mary Horswell on 29 Sep 1774 and they had six children (not named in post. Then he married (2) Mrs. Hannah Weaver, widow. What was her maiden name? Who was her first husband? Benoni was the oldest of four children -- who were the others? Did they keep the surname of Coggeshall or did they also use the surname Weaver? When and where did Benoni die? Do you have his day and month of birth in 1786?

Not all questions can be adequately answered by secondary-source published genealogies, especially those with no source notes.

Hannah Weaver was the daughter of Thomas Weaver. Apparently her son Benoni Weaver was an OOW child. His birth is in Middletown RI records as Benoni, son of Hannah; no father mentioned. In my experience when records are written this way, the father has not acknowledged the child or the mother has chosen not to pursue it. When the father acknowledged the child, it received his surname.

In Thomas Weaver's will, he mentions his daughter Hannah, now married to Josiah Coggeshall, and his grandson Benoni Weaver. With the birth record that makes two original sources. I could find no record of an elder Benoni Weaver in any records of the time, although have not done a thorough search.

Someone else interested in this family asked me to look for evidence of the elder Benoni because I live in the right area; it is not my family. Further research into court records, land records and tax records would bring to light any older man named Benoni if he was in the colony at the time, and would shed light on the legend that young Benoni "changed his name to receive an inheritance."

Family trees on Ancestry.com are all over the map re: this line. So much conflicting information! So with your kind reply I am beginning to see the light. Just need to know the maiden name of Hannah, widow of Benoni, and who then married Josiah Coggeshall.

Thanks so much, Diane

This is Pete Coggeshall -- Sandy's husband.

The 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" (TCIA) has this listing on page 277:
Morgan Evarts Coggeshall was born in St Louis on July 31, 1882 to the Honorable Carol Herbert Coggeshall and {his wife} Clara Bell Evarts Morgan.

This is the only information on this Morgan (who is the only Morgan in this book). Added information is available in TCIA on his ancestors, particularly his Coggeshall Ancestors.

My father's book "Ancestors and Kin" has no listing for Morgan because Morgan is descended from President John's son Joshua -- and my father's book only tracks the Coggeshall line after President John through his first son, Major John Coggeshall. The advantage of "Ancestors and Kin" (over TCIA) for all Coggeshall descendants is the more detailed and accurate information it contains about the Coggeshall line from President John back into England.

Most currently living Coggeshalls can tie into a listing in TCIA and thus trace their line back to President John Coggeshall. Then "Ancestors & Kin" gets them back into England with more accuracy than is available in TCIA

I would like to join your Coggeshall research group. I am seeking relationship between Stephen Perry Weaver, son of Benoni and Mary Weaver, and Joshua Coggeshall. Stephen's obit (Newport Mercury, week ending 15 Sep 1904) states that he "lived for a long time with Joshua Coggeshall on the West Main Road". Stephen Perry Weaver was born 10 Sep 1822 and died 13 Sep 1906 (some say he died on the 6th)in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. After the death of his father, Benoni (date unknown), he managed the family farm on Brown's Lane until his mother (Mary) died in 1876. Ownership changed hands and Stephen bought a smaller farm in Portsmouth. Estate of Stephen P. Weaver (Newport Mercury, 22 Sep 1906). "Elizabeth W. and Sarah G. Coggeshall presented petition for appointment of Alton Coggeshall as administrator. Who are these Coggeshalls and how are they related to Stephen Perry Weaver?

This is Sandy's husband, Pete.

There is no information on Alzada, her husband George Owen, or anyone with the last name of Burgess in either my father's book, "Ancestors and Kin," or the 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America." Given the date you have for Alzada's birth, she should have made it into the second book. While this does not mean she did not exist, it means that the two best published soucres for Coggeshall information do not have her listed.

Perhaps the group listed above working on Coggeshall (and other) genealogy may have some information on your Alzada.
Hi there,
Do you have any information on an Alzada Coggshall? She was born in Rhode Island around 1867 and died in California in 1943. Was married to George Owen. Mother's maiden name is Burgess. I can't find anything on her with this spelling of the last name being different. Would love to have info on her parents and there place of birth. Thanks for any help.

This is Sandy's husband, Pete Coggeshall.
Jerry, most of the information you provided on Humility Coggeshall is contained on page 15 of "The Coggeshalls in America." The book spells her husband's name as Benjamin Greene (not Green) and does not provide a specific date in January, 1670 for her birth. The book only shows that she died "after 1719" and with no specific location. And while all 12 of her children are shown as being born in Portsmouth, RI; by the time these children were married, 2 were married in Portsmouth, 2 in Westerly, RI (right on the Connecticut line) and 3 in East Greenwich, RI -- with 5 showing no marriage location. While the book says nothing about this, it does appear the Benjamin and Humility left Portsmouth and likely moved to East Greenwich, RI -- which is a more likely place for Humility's death than all the way down in Greenwich, Connecticut -- right on the line with New York State.

What kind of information are you seeking? This family is covered in the 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" -- however, the book does not have him married to a second wife. The book does list all 5 of the children with Marietta, their spouses and children (for those that married).

The book also ties Charles Henry back to President John Coggeshall, first President(Governor) of Rhode Island. My father's book, "Ancestors and Kin" (published in 1988) then ties this family back to England and Sir Thomas de Coggeshall who was living in 1149.

Re: Pearce Horswell Coggeshall b. abt 1780

I was surprised to find that there were 3 Coggeshall men who married Horswell women. The book does not show that the women were related, but I suspect that they were.

- Joseph Coggeshall married Elizabeth Horswell in Middletown, RI on 9-29-1774. She was born in Little Compton, RI about 1753; died in Middletown, RI on 10-1-1840.

- Josiah Coggeshall married Mary Horswell, spinster, in Newport RI on 10-10-1776, by the Rev. Gardiner Thurston. She died in Middletown, RI. She was his first wife, and he then married Mrs Hannah Weaver, widow and then Mrs Patience (Tripp) Peckham, widow. Mr Coggeshall was a farmer in Middletown, RI. Pearce Horswell Coggeshall was the last of 6 children born by Mary before she died.

- William Coggeshall married Deborah Horswell in Middletown, RI. (there is no date given for this wedding, but their first child was born on 12-1-1794).

William and Josiah were brothers with William 5 years younger than Josiah, and it's possible that their wives were sisters.

I see that William Dunbar was Hannah's second husband.

Given all of the pages of information you would like on these families, it would be much easier for me to photo copy the pages from The Coggeshalls in America and mail them to you rather than try to copy the information here and risk making a mistake in the transcription. Send me an e-mail message at this address to arrange for this information:
pcoggeshall@earthlink.net

I'm Sandy's husband, Pete Coggeshall

The 1930 book "The Coggeshalls in America" beginning on page 173 has 3.5 pages of information on Pearce and his children. This book also allows you to trace Pearce back to President John Coggeshall (first President -- later called Governor -- of Rhode Island) who died Nov 27, 1647. My father's 1988 book, "Ancestors and Kin," then allows you to trace the Coggeshall line back an additional 15 generations to Sir Thomas de Coggeshall of Coggeshall, England, living in 1149. I can copy pages from "The Coggeshalls in America," and have new copies of "Ancestors and Kin" for sale.

Some correct information you need on Pearce:
- Born Middletown, RI on 3-15-1785
- Died Bristol, RI on 4-24-1831
- Married Bristol, RI about 1805, Nancy Brown, daughter of Sylvanus and Hannah (Coggeshall) Brown of Little Compton, RI. [Hannah Coggeshall was the daughter of William and Mary (Andrews) Coggeshall.]
- Nancy Brown was born Little Compton, RI on 3-5-1789; died Bristol, RI in Sept, 1875.
- Mr Coggeshall was a farmer and gardener in the Town of Bristol, and lived on the North Point Farm on Popasquash Neck.
- He was a member of St John's Lodge, AF&AM in Providence, RI.
- Pearce's parents were Josiah Coggeshall and Mary Horswell [with information on them also available].

This concludes all of the information on Pearce except for his children -- which takes 3.25 pages in the book. Your list of Children is not accurate, so I will list them and their birth dates below, all born in Bristol, RI:
1) Mary Ann, 11-19-1807
2) Freeborn, 3-15-1809 [male, but not traced further in book, died in Cuba 10-5-1842, no children]
3) Ann Brown, 5-18-1810
4) Sylvanus Brown, 4-15-1812 [male traced further in book]
5) Matilda, 10-21-1813
6) Eliza Jane, 2-6-1815
7) Ruth Greene, 2-19-1817
8) Hannah Harker, 6-13-1818
9) William Tear, Feb, 1820 (died 1836)
10) Harriette Smith, 9-22-1823
11) Henry Bradford Dearth, 7-28-1826 [male traced further]
12) Emily Pearce, 8-1-1828
The balance of the pages on these children cover the husbands and children of all of these female children.

I hope this helps.
