helen many thanks, had already found this one, i think he is my 5x great granddaddy's nephew.

the cornelius i am after was born 1818 died 1903, and i cant find him in the 1841 census when he would have been 23. his parents are in there listed as cockings not coggins, but despite months of searching i cannot find any trace of him and it is very irritating.

thank you so much for your help and kind suggestion.

Hello, I'm looking for a Joe Coggins, born circa 1925 Mississippi, he married Bessie Sandford in Alabama. I'm afraid I don't have any other info on him, he left his wife and two children when they were young and they were raised by their grandfather John Sandford. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did find a J.D. Sandford on the 1930 census son of Jesse with siblings Burel, and Louise, does anyone know what the initials J.D. stand for?
George Coggins in Hall County, Georgia 1880 census

I am looking for the parents of George Coggins (b. abt 1848 in Georgia). He is found in the 1880 census in Hall County, Roberts, Georgia with his family. With his wife Haner (b. abt 1855), and children: William(b. 1873), J. Harrison (b. 1874), and Teddie (b.1879). The family story is George died of a disease and the family was left to be cared for by Pucketts. I found in 1895 a Hannah Adeline Coggins married Ephraim A. Puckett in Hall County, Georgia and resided in Gwinnett County, Georgia. James Harrison Coggins is buried in Friendship Cemetery in Flowery Branch, Georgia as well as E.A. Puckett, confirming that this is probably his step-dad. Still George Coggins seems to be a mystery. In this same cemetery is a man by the name of Eaf Coggins...also known as Ephraim Coggins (who married Mamie Dodd). Further study revealed that his parents were Wesley Coggins and Mary "Stacy" Puckett. Stacy Puckett is the sibling of Ephraim Puckett. I find it highly likely that Wesley and George Coggins are related in some way...either as brothers or cousins. Again, Wesley Coggins is also a mystery. Any information regarding these families would be very helpful. Thanks, Heather

Winnie Sizemore is most likely related to Stacy Adeline Sizemore. Stacy married Martin Van Buren Bailey, a brother of my ancestor David Bailey on Christmas Day 1859 in Gwinnett Co. GA. Stacy was a sister of Ephraim Sizemore who served in Co. H. 35th GA Infantry alongside David Bailey and David's brothers Elijah, Martin, and Worthy Oliver Bailey. Martin and W. O. both settled on Sand Mountain around Geraldine AL after the Civil War and lived the rest of their lives there. Martin became a Baptist minister. There are no less than 5 Pucketts--Asa, David, Elias, George, and William--on the roster of Co. H 35th GA Infantry. I'm sure these Pucketts are kin to Nimrod "Nim" Puckett who married David Bailey's half sister Caroline.
--Lamar Wadsworth, Rockmart GA

We have multiple connections. Your Abagail Caroline Bailey is a half-sister to my gr-gr grandfather David M. Bailey, who was the oldest child of James Bailey by his second marriage to Elizabeth Gressom. Caroline (she went by her middle name)was one of three children James Bailey had by his first marriage. He also had a son named William and a son named Ezekiel "Zeke" by the first marriage.

We also have a Coggins connection. James Oliver Bailey b. ca. 1858 son of David M. Bailey and Mary Shelton, is my great-grandfather (there is another James Oliver Bailey, about the same age, son of David Bailey's brother Elijah and his wife Stacy Cross--it can get confusing--giving first cousins who grew up within 1/4 mile of each other the same first, middle, and last names was done deliberately to cause confusion for future genealogists--this is how these people entertained themselves. My James Oliver Bailey always went by his initials, J. O., his first cousin with the same name always went by Oliver) Anyway,my ancestor James Oliver Bailey married Martha Jane Westbrooks 10/19/1880 in Gwinnett Co. GA. Martha Jane Westbrooks, b. ca. 1858 in Jackson Co. GA was the second of 12 children of Joshua Hudson Westbrooks and Castletine Melissa "Cassie" Coggins. I'm certain that my Cassie Coggins Westbrooks b. ca. 1832 has a connection with your Coggins. Just not sure what it is. Joshua and Cassie were founding members of New Prospect Methodist Church near Buford, not far from their house which still stands on Little Mill Rd. They are buried at New Prospect as are J. O. and Martha Bailey and a lot of other Westbrooks kin. Probably half of the graves at New Prospect are kin to Josh and Cassie Westbrooks one way or another. I don't know who Cassie's father is. She is on the 1850 census of Hall County, living with her mother and sister. Cassie is 18 years old on 1850 census. Mother's name is listed as Polly (no idea of maiden name, and Polly was often a nickname for Mary), don't know if Polly was widowed or if husband had left. Cassie married Joshua Hudson Westbrooks between 1850-52. Can't find a marriage record for Joshua and CAssie--I think they may have married in Hall County. Jackson County marriage records are intact from day one, but Hall lost some marriage records when the 1936 tornado hit the courthouse. Of course, Gwinnett is a possibility as well (they were living in Gwinnett on Little Mill Rd by 1860), and Gwinnett has lost many records to courthouse fires. Barrow County is in the same area, but that county was not formed until 1914.

Looks like we have both Bailey and Coggins connections!

Hi again.
Sorry wasn't reading your post at time I was writing. Ralph was born in Georgia according to 1930 census. They lived in Buford at time of census. In that census they listed James Wesley born in Georgia. He was born in Alabama. Sometime before the 1900 census Cicero and Mary Jane had followed her parents to Alabama. They returned to Georgia after her father died in 1902. In 1910 census it states that James Wesley was born in Alabama. Mary Jane Parents are Josephus G Fraser 1846-1902 and Winnie Ford Sizemore 1847-1929. They are both buried in Alabama.

If you give me your e-mail I can send you some info. My line is of Coggins. My grandfather was Cicero brother.

Hi,

Iola B was born 22 Jan 1899, died 24 April 1971 Gwinnett, Georgia.
James Wesley Coggins was born 15 Sept 1901 in Alabama. Died 12 Jan 1958 in Gwinnett, Georgia.
Burial for both First Baptist Cemetery, Sugar Hill, Gwinnett County, Georgia

Father Cicero C Coggins born 2 Aug 1874 Georgia died 11 Sept 1949 Hall, Georgia. Mother Mary Jane Fraser born 26 July 1874 Gwinnett, Georgia. died 25 April 1922 Hall, Georgia. Married 5 Nov 1893. According to death cert. Mary Jane is buried at Freindship Church Hall. I think Cicero is buried at Harmony. Not sure.

Parent of Cicero are Wesley Coggins born abt 1853 Georgia and Mary Stacey Puckett born 12 June 1957 Georgia, died 16 Jan 1935 Georgia. Wesley died before 1885 in farming accident. Don't know exact date. Have been unable to find parents for Wesley. Married 27 March 1873. Have Picture of Mary Stacey. She went by name Stacey.

Parents of Mary Stacey are Nimrod Puckett born July 10 1823 South Carolina, died 15 April 1907 Georgia and Abagail Caroline Bailey born 2 Dec 1827 Georgia, died 2 Oct 1904 in Georgia.

Wesley, Mary Stacey, Nimrod and Abagail are all buried at Friendship Baptist Cemetery, Buford, Hall County, Georgia. Wesley and Mary Stacey is an unmarked grave.

The Puckett and Bailey line go a quite bit futher back. Lots more info when you get to them. Coggins stops with Wesley.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

William Calvin Coggins Sr. and Jr.

William Calvin Coggins, Sr. was born on April 25, 1876 in Holmes Co., Mississippi and died sometime in Union parish, Louisiana most likely. He had several wives one of which was named Earla L. Watts (b. 1912 Louisiana) and they had 3 children whose names I'm hoping to find out. I'm hoping one of them will be my grandfather William Calvin Coggins, Jr. (b. May 16, 1929; d. April 1, 2001 both in Union parish, Louisiana) who was an orphan at the Louisiana Baptist Children's home in Monroe, LA. I've always heard that W. C. Coggins, Sr. placed his son in this orphanage after his wife had died because he didn't want to raise his son by himself. Please contact me if you have any information regarding Sr.'s death date or if you can verify the name of Jr.'s mother and know what happened to her and why Sr. wasn't willing to raise his own son. Also, if you know the names of Earla's other 2 children.

This Willis Coggin married Nicey Ann Calloway.

There were quite a few Coggin's in Rowan(later known as Davidson County, NC) at this time. Good luck searching.

Willis Coggins was born about 1796 in NC but I don't know which county. He might have been born in Moore co or Chatham co NC.I understand there were many Coggins in Moore co NC in the early 1800's. He was married to an Abigail. He is on the 1820 Chatham co NC census. If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly apreciated. Ross
